Foundation Report
by President Robert Shira |
||||
|
The last Foundation Meeting in Honolulu approved 18 of the 20 submitted grant applications totaling $135,550. The Board funded the Academy programs at $45,000. The balance of payments to our Costa Rica commitment were completed, which were $7500 for the dental school multimedia center and $7500 for the Loader-Espinach Award presentation. Since 1997, the Foundation has been supporting the establishment of a $104,500 multimedia center at the University of Costa Rica School of Dentistry in memory of the late Dr. Espinach, who practiced in Costa Rica. That center was completed and dedicated to Dr. Espinach this March. Also, the Loader-Espinach Award (as dictated by Dr. Espinachs will) of $7500 was presented this February to Dr. Antonio Bascones of Spain. Additionally, one of the student scholarship awards was given to the school.
Student scholarships were funded for 54 U.S. dental schools and 28 international schools. The apportionment is based on the Academys membership. The Board re-evaluated the Goal and Guidelines for the Grants/Project Program to fine-tune several changes. The Board held an election for its officers to serve three-year terms, with Dr. Robert Shira being re-elected to President, Carl Lundgren to Vice President, and George Higue to Treasurer. Dr. Shig Ryan Kishi was reappointed to serve a three-year term as Executive Director. The Board voted to include a budget line item of $20,000 to $25,000 to fund special projects or contributions that the Board felt were worthy but did not fall within the current guidelines. Such an award would require a unanimous vote of the Trustees. The Board established the scholarship award at $1500 for the coming year. Dr. Leo Bongers retired from the Board. The President appointed a Finance Committee to review and consider the Foundations investments. This Committee consists of Chairman George Higue, Shig Ryan Kishi, Carl Lundgren, Michael Cripton, Fred Halik, Dave Campbell, Nick Saccone, William Kort, Min Horiuchi, and James Long. The Board, in the interests of saving expenses, voted to meet only once in 2000 and that in October in Chicago during the ADA Session and the Academy Board Meeting. |
The ongoing situation of the Brenes-Espinach estate in Costa Rica includes a jewelry shop and a flower shop in an old building. Squatters are living in half of it and have sued the Foundation for ownership. The Board has asked our attorney there to take such actions to defend our interests. The jewelry shop is currently offered for sale for $55,000. The Foundation also must maintain the Espinach burial plot and pay cemetery fees in San Jose.
The first designated Humanitarian Award by the Foundation was presented to the MEND (Meet Every Need with Dignity) Program of Southern California. Press releases have been made by Trustees Larry Barrett and Carl Lundgren and were widely distributed. Larry Barrett also attended the Academy sponsored AADE (American Association of Dental Editors) editors workshop last spring to introduce the Foundation to those attending. In 2000, 31 grant requests were being considered at a total of $270,703. Executive Secretary Shig Ryan Kishi then discussed the progress of some of the grant applications. Student scholarships in 2000 were designated for the United States (54), Canada (10), Argentina (1), Australia (3), Belgium (1), Brazil (2), Costa Rica (1), Chile (1), England (2), France (2), Hong Kong (1), India (2), Ireland (1), Japan (3), Korea (1), Netherlands (1), Singapore (1), Peru (1), and Uruguay (1). Treasurer George Higue distributed a most complete booklet of all Foundation income, investments, and expenditures for the year for all three Foundation accounts. ![]() Foundation officers Treasurer George Higue, President Robert Shira, and Executive Director Shig Ryan Kishi giving their report to the Academy |

| Dr. Benoit, PFA Section Chair for Rhode Island, reported for her committee of Drs. PFA Website Report
by Mark Stanley |
||||
|
Our Webmaster Mark Stanley addressed the Board and set up a laptop to exhibit our Website. Along with the usual information about the Academy and the Foundation, the Website contains back copies of Dental World, our Online Fellowship Directory, the Officers and Trustees, life history of Pierre Fauchard, a calendar of events, sales paraphernalia catalogue, awards given, Academy forms, the Hall of Fame, a mentorship page, online application for the MNBA bank card, and links to places of interest. Mark then discussed the Internet in general, noting that the gender ratio is now moving closer to par, with 40% of US respondents being female (as compared with 5% in 1994). Privacy (30.5%), over censorship (24%), in the United States is now the major issue. In Europe, censorship and navigation are equally important over privacy. Women were more concerned over the privacy issue, while men were more concerned over censorship. Younger people are more concerned over censorship. Electronic commerce has taken off in greater numbers and is growing. The biggest concern in purchasing over the Internet is security. Eighty-four percent of the users consider E-mail and the information on the Internet indispensable. |
![]() PFA Webmaster Mark Stanley making a point with Editor Brophy Among European respondents, 44% report English as their primary language, 12.17% German, 10.53% Dutch, and other languages less than 5%. European respondents (68%) were more likely to have created a Web page than U.S. users (43%), and males (51%) were more likely than females (37%). Eighty-five percent of the respondents use the Web daily. The use of the Internet is growing as more households acquire the hardware and as more of the population becomes accustomed to its use. |
