Trustee Reports

Region I (Europe)—Trustee Pierre Marois

This area has been very active with a continuing education course in Belgium given by Chairman Professor Jose Dahan while inducting new Fellows; then our Hall of Fame Ceremonies in Paris also honoring Professor Charles Berenholc, President of the French National Dental Academy, with Honorary Fellowship; and a tour of the Foundation grant–sponsored mobile dental clinic; then a leadership dinner in London with Fellow Bryan Parkins.

Along with PFA President Fred Halik, PFA Secretary/Treasurer Richard Kozal, Hall of Fame Chairman Ray Klein, and Editor Jim Brophy, German Section Chair Frank Braun joined the entourage in Paris.

In Switzerland, Chair Dalla Bona is considering retirement because of health reasons.

In Spain, Professor Javier Garro is organizing Valencia for PFA.

As chairman for the Leadership Conference last February in Chicago, I noted that we had a successful attendance of 53 PFA leaders—28 Section Chairs, 6 Officers, 9 Trustees, and 18 speakers presenting 20 talks, including breakout sections and a final wrapup.

I attended the Connecticut Section Meeting and helped induct nine new Fellows. Dr. Howard Bailit was presented the Outstanding Dentist of the Year Award by Chair Howard Mark.

I attended the Rhode Island Annual Awards Dinner with Chair Christine Benoit to help induct six new Fellows and honor Dr. Robert Bartro with the Outstanding Dentist of the Year Award. Christine Benoit has been elected to RIDA Vice President, and PFA will need a new Chair for Rhode Island. I have nominated Mentorship Chairman Richard Walsh of Charlestown.

I attended the New York Section Awards Luncheon hosted by Chairman Ed Feinberg to help induct new Fellows and honor NYDA’s Executive Director Roy Lasky.

I attended the New Hampshire Section Annual Awards Dinner at Chair David Stahl’s home in Manchester to induct seven new Fellows.

Dr. Don Brotman has been selected the Maryland Section Chairman. Dr. Ben Swanson resigned as Chairman and PFA Historian.

Dr. Kendrick Van Meter has been nominated for Vermont Section Chair. I met with him this November to assist in rebuilding the Vermont PFA.

In New Jersey, Dr. Chinoy, as Speaker of the New Jersey House, will bring a new respect for our Section.

Pennsylvania’s Dr. Joseph Donato is doing an admirable job.

Chair Norm Becker of Massachusetts is the State Editor and dental leader doing a great job in one of our largest Sections.

Maine’s Chair Roger Kay is an important leader and is rebuilding our Section there.

Chair Alan Stewart of Delaware is recruiting new Fellows for his Section.

Ashur Chavoor has served in Washington, DC, for many years as Chair and is trying to institute a Mentorship Program there.

Our Smokeless Tobacco Program continues to be a slow but progressive one. Our regional seminar was held last April in Atlanta by Dr. Mark Barry.

Region IV (Midwest United States)—Trustee James Englander

Kentucky’s Chair Karl Lange continues to lead his Fellows who participate in the Special Olympics Special Smiles program. They presented their Foundation scholarship awards to University of Louisville student Marianne Mills and University of Kentucky student William Scott Jenkins.

Chair Virginia Merchant of Michigan reports on the success of the Mentorship Program at the University of Detroit-Mercy, which has 28 seniors and juniors participating. The program is being opened up to sophomores. All students are encouraged to participate in the PFA functions throughout the year. The PFA student award was presented to Meredith Haar Sheridan of the University of Michigan.

Wisconsin’s Chair Glenn Maihofer hosted the huge annual Awards Luncheon last spring to induct new Fellows, present the Outstanding Dentist of the Year Award, and honor the Foundation scholarship winner Lori Stempski.

West Virginia Chairman James Overberger held the annual Meeting last April to present the Outstanding Dentist of the Year Award to Dr. C. Richard Gerber and the Student Award to Jeffrey Minchau.

Illinois Chair James Shelton inducted three new Fellows at the President’s Luncheon during the annual Board Meeting in Chicago, and he presented the Outstanding Dentist of the Year Award to Dr. Marvin Berman. Foundation Student Awards went to University of Illinois College of Dentistry student Loreline Dulay, Northwestern University School of Dentistry student Spencer Wilson, and Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine student Jeffrey Kunsemiller.

Ohio’s PFA Student Awards went to Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry’s Vinh Phuc Thanh Nguyen and Ohio University College of Dentistry’s Matthew Parker.

Region V (Western United States)—Trustee Gary Lowder

I attended the Section functions for Utah, Idaho, Southern California, and Northern California, which were ably chaired and professionally done.

Nevada and Alaska held their annual meetings and inducted new Fellows.

Wyoming’s annual Meeting was attended by Vice President Scott Welch.

Montana held no meeting this year, but with the completion of his state office term, Chair Hansen feels he will have more time to devote to building his Section.

Arizona’s Chair Brian Wilson hopes to do the same in 2001.

In Oregon, we need a chairman.

Washington Chair Dave Minahan has not filed a report as yet.

Hawaii’s Chair Fumio Tsuji has requested retirement because of health problems.

New Mexico Chair Robert Gherardi has been serving as Secretary of the New Mexico Board of Dentistry, and the recent law changes have taken most of his time. He expects to be free after the ADA Meeting to be able to concentrate on building his Section.

Trustee Reports continued

Region VI (Canada)—Trustee Kevin Roach

I distributed $4500 in Foundation scholarship funds to the 10 dental school Junior Governors.

My sincere thanks to the Foundation for the initial $5000 grant for the new PFA Board Room in the new dental museum in Ottawa, Ontario.

Quebec Chairman, Laval University Professor Guy Miranda, has applied for a Foundation grant for $10,000 for a university dental project in Paraguay.

Canadian Fellows donated $1000 to the PFA Foundation from voluntary contributions.

We hosted a Hall of Fame installation for Dr. James Willmott in Toronto this spring with President Halik, Hall of Fame Chairman Ray Klein, and Editor Brophy in attendance. Fifteen new Fellows were inducted by Ontario Chair Aldo Boccia. Dr. Ann Dale, University of Toronto faculty historian and museum archivist, gave a short presentation on Dr. Willmott’s artifacts.

The PFA Ontario Outstanding Dentist of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Donald Rife, a past Canadian Dental Association President.

The British Columbia Section has a new Chair in Evelyn McNee, who is the Registrar for the British Columbia College of Dentistry.

Prairie Provinces Chair Sheldon Claman, past Region 6 Trustee, has resigned and retired from practice.

Quebec Section has Barry Dolman of Montreal serving as Vice Chair.

The Maritime Provinces Chair is Gary MacDonald of Newfoundland.

The future PFA Meetings will be held during the CDA Session in Winnipeg, Manitoba, 25-27 January 2001, and in Montreal, Quebec, 25-29 May 2002. Mark your calendars now.

Region X (Central United States)—Trustee Michael Perpich

I attended a student function at the University of Missouri School of Dentistry and was searching for a State Chairman, but to no avail as yet.

North Dakota is in need of a new Chairman.

Oklahoma’s Jim Saddoris has stepped down and is recommending Dr. William Goodman as his replacement.
Region VII (Latin America)—Trustee Bernardo Levit

In South America, we are immersed in the worst crisis in our history. Globalization has made our industries obsolete. We have no production, no jobs, and a depression coupled with inflation has gripped our population. The hospitals have no medicines. And many professional people are homeless with no means to leave their country. The future is bleak, especially for our educators and professionals. Statistics show that 25% of the young people want to leave.

Even with all this hardship, we have had seven dental school deans and two researchers become Fellows this year. The Foundation scholarships help the students tremendously.

We participated in many dental organizational events, such as the XXX Congress Asociacion Odontologica Argentina, Circulo Odontologico de Belgrano, the 70th anniversary Meeting in Parana E Rios Province, the Academia Nacional de Odontologica, and the 69th anniversary Mutual Odontologica Argentina. We also participated in the dental school graduation ceremonies, presenting PFA Certificates to the best pupils.

The Sections in Peru, Uruguay, and Chile are progressing well. In Brazil, the situation is tight, as it is in Argentina.

Region VIII (Australasia)—Trustee William Winspear

We are preparing for our Section’s National Breakfast Meeting in Brisbane on 7 May 2001 when nine new Fellows will be inducted.

Six students from Australia, New Zealand, and the Fiji Islands have been granted the Academy’s Undergraduate Award for Merit for their academic achievements. Dr. Sue Taji, a recent graduate from the University of Adelaide, received the Gordon Rowell Prize for Excellence.

Region IX (Japan)—Trustee Eiichi Katagiri

No report.

Dame Margaret Seward of the United Kingdom was honoured for her many years of outstanding dental service to her country and to the world through FDI.
