2000 Grant Report

Foundation Board of Trustees Meeting

The Foundation awarded $306,480 in service program grants and scholarships to be distributed in 2001.

Foundation President Robert Shira announced awarding $183,480 for 23 grants that were predominantly for volunteer dental clinics serving the needy throughout the world. Scholarships totaling $123,000 were awarded to 82 dental schools globally. This fifth year of the Foundation marks $1.5 million that have gone to assist the dental needs of our planet. The programs funded at the Foundation October Meeting are:

• The Thousand Smiles Foundation, which provides cleft palate and palate reconstruction for children born with craniofacial deformities in Mexico and Costa Rica

• The National Board of French Dentist Surgeons, which provides care to the indigent of Paris in their mobile dental van

• The Rhode Island PFA Section, to continue their program of educating students and adults on the hazards of chewing tobacco

• The University of Costa Rica School of Dentistry, to continue to develop their Brenes-Espinach multimedia center

• The Costa Rica PFA, to provide a continuing education program in conjunction with the awarding of the Loader-Espinach Prize

• The St. Paul District Dental Society of Minnesota, to provide supplies for a dental clinic for needy patients

• The Kindness in Action Service Society of Alberta, Canada, to provide volunteer dental care in Honduras

• The Martin de Porres Dental Center in Topeka, Kansas, to provide removable prosthetic appliances to patients below the poverty line

• The Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, to provide a “hands on” continuing education program for dental personnel to provide oral health care in long-term care facilities

Kidlink of Southern Pines, North Carolina, to treat indigent children

• The Maryland Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped, to provide dental care for indigent, disabled patients

Changing Lives of South Ogden, Utah, for providing donated dental services to the poor in San Blas, Mexico

• The Minneapolis District Dental Society, to provide dental care for the homeless

• The Indigent Dental Care Clinic of the Volunteer Ministry Center of Knoxville, Tennessee, to provide dental care to the poor

• The Northern Nevada Dental Society, to provide dental care for youngsters not covered by third-party programs

• The Louisiana State University Health Sciences Foundation, to provide dental care for indigent jazz musicians of New Orleans

• The Canada PFA, to continue to develop its Canadian Hall of Fame

• The UCLA sponsored Roybal-Allard Children’s Dental Center of eastside Los Angeles, to provide dental care for the poor

• The UCLA School of Dentistry, to provide dental care to the poor

• The Good Shepherd Mission Clinic with the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, to provide dental care to the poor

By the Roots, sponsored by the Texas A&M University System Health Sciences Center research Foundation, to provide an oral health curriculum for children

• The International PFA, for a continuing education program, museum expenses, hall of Fame development, and extension of the Mentorship Program

• The Humanitarian Award of $5000 has been awarded to the Connecticut PFA for their “Bridge the Gap” Program, which provides long term psychiatric and indigent patients with acrylic removable upper partial dentures. The goal is to improve patients’ appearances to make them more employable.

Foundation News continued

Uruguay

Chairman Roy Cooper received the Foundation Scholarship Award, but because of the politics between the national dental school and the new private dental school (whose Dean is our past Section Chairman), he proceeded cautiously. Finally, the national dental school submitted three names of students to receive the award. With the offer of the Award again this year, they held another presentation ceremony last November. Giving scholarships away is not as easy as it may seem.

Canada

Trustee Kevin Roach presented a large check from the Canadian Fellows as a donation to the Foundation’s funds.

Costa Rica

Chair Mario Rodriguez Cordero reported on the successful presentation of the Loader-Brenes Espinach Award to Dr. Antonio Bascones Martinez of Spain, who gave the clinic there last March.

New Zealand

Dental student Te Moananui was awarded the Foundation Scholarship.

United States

Georgia

Associate Dean of Students for the Medical College of Georgia, School of Dentistry, Dr. Carole Hanes thanked the Foundation for the PFA Scholarship that she presented to Victor van Greuningen at the Welcome Back Assembly last August.

Illinois

The Foundation was notified that Northwestern University’s School of Dentistry, which is to close this April, had presented the Foundation Scholarship to student Sabina Yun last October.

The Illinois Mentorship Award was presented during the President’s Luncheon last October.

Missouri

The University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Dentistry Assistant Dean for Student Programs Daniel Tira thanked the Foundation and the Academy for awarding its scholarship to Anita Berry. The award was presented to her at the Recognition Ceremony.

Nebraska

Dean John Reinhardt of the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry presented the Foundation scholarship check to dental student J. Brant Darby. He will receive the PFA Certificate at the formal Professional Day Ceremonies on 16 March 2001.

Mexico

Chairman Ernesto Acuna attended the FDI Meeting last November in Paris. He had planned to be at our Annual Meeting in Chicago, but his mother needed his care after surgery.

Philippines

Dr. Diampo J. Lim, Dean of the Manila’s East College Dental School, has been installed by the Academy Board at the October Meeting as the new Section Chairman. Dr. Lim assumes the duties from retiring Chair Dr. Ruben Navia.

United Kingdom

Chair Rash Patel relates that he has 44 prospective Fellows awaiting induction. He is trying to arrange a time and place for such a ceremony and thinks that the occasion of the Royal College of Surgeons of England retreat in Scotland the first week of July might be the best event. They have invited PFA to join them for this Conference to be held at Gleneagles.

Uruguay

Chair Roy Cooper hosted the Camaraderie Dinner last October, with Dr. Pablo Escudero giving a lecture on the “History of Dentistry.” Dr. Cooper presented a copy of the Life and Times of Pierre Fauchard to Dr. Escudero.

Past Chair Walter Lieber is serving as Dean of a new private dental school in Montevideo.

Argentina

Trustee Bernardo Levit presented the PFA Student Certificate for Academic Excellence to Yael Frydman.

Canada

Fellow Burton Conrod of Sydney, Nova Scotia, has become President of the Canadian Dental Association last September at its Ottawa Meeting. Dr. Conrod is past President of the Cape Breton Island Dental Society and of the Nova Scotia Dental Association. He has served as CDA Governor since 1991 and been a member of the Executive Council since 1995. He is a Fellow in PFA, ICD, and ADI.

Fellow Tom Breneman of Brandon, Manitoba, has been acclaimed Vice President of the Canadian Dental Association last September at its annual Board of Governor’s meeting in Ottawa. Dr. Breneman is past President of the Western Manitoba Dental Society and the Manitoba Dental Association. He has served as a CDA Governor and a member of the Executive Council since 1994. Besides being a PFA Fellow, Dr. Breneman is a Fellow in ICD and ADI. Dr. Breneman will become CDA President in 2002.

Fellow Bernard Dolansky, an Ottawa endodontist, was awarded CDA Honorary Membership last September for his outstanding contributions to dentistry. He has served as Ottawa Dental Society President (1980-1981), Ontario Dental Association President (1986) and CDA President in 1992-1993. He was instrumental in developing the CDAnet. He is a member of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and ICD as well as PFA.

Fellow Jean-Yves Turcotte, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Quebec City was honored last September in Ottawa with the CDA Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his outstanding service to our profession. Dr. Turcotte is a Professor at Laval University School of Dentistry. He is a member of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and is a Fellow in ICD and ADI. He was a career officer in the Canadian Forces Dental Services, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and receiving the Canadian Forces Decoration.

Fellow Stephane Schwatz, pedodontist in Montreal, was presented the CDA Distinguished Service Award last September in Ottawa for her tremendous contributions as clinician, lecturer, and researchist. She serves on the staff of Montreal’s Children’s Hospital as well as Director of Pediatric Dentistry at McGill University. She has received the W. W. Wood Award for excellence in dental education. She holds Fellowships in PFA, ACD, and ICD.

Fellow Brian Barrett of Charlottetown received the CDA Distinguished Service Award last September in Ottawa for his years of service on the national and local levels of dentistry. He has served as Registrar of the Dental Council of PEI for 11 years and is currently the Executive Director, a post he has held for the last 13 years. Dr. Barrett is a National Board member of the Dentistry Canada Fund and the Vice Chairman of the Board of Atlantic Dental Services Corporation. He serves as a dental consultant for the PEI’s Workers Compensation Board and a national consultant for Veterans Affairs Canada. He is a Fellow in PFA and ACD.

Fellow Ray Wenn of Charlottetown was honored last September in Ottawa with the Canadian Dental Association’s top recognition of Honorary Membership. Dr. Wenn joined the CDA Board of Governors in 1986. He was Secretary-Registrar of the Dental Association of Prince Edward Island (1979-1984) and its President in 1984-1985. He became CDA President in 1993-1994 and was instrumental in mounting the Enough Is Enough campaign against the federal government’s taxing dental plan premiums. He is a Fellow in PFA, ICD, ACD, and ADI.

Chairman Professor Javier Garro Barrio held the Investment Ceremony last May in Valencia to induct into Fellowship Drs. Jose Manuel Aguirre of Bilbao, Jose Balnco-Moreno of Oviedo, Jaime Bonet of Valencia, Benito Castello of Valencia, Jose Manuel Granero of Murcia, Jorge Federico Lindner of Pontevedra, Eduardo Lombardia of Oviedo, Pascual Martinez-Minana of Valencia, Juan M. Minguez of Valencia, Blas Noguerol of Granada, Jose M. Saiz of Castellon, Jordi Samso of Barcelona, Joaquin Velazquez of Cadiz, and Juan Jose Yaniz of Navarra. Section Secretary Leopoldo Barcena assisted Chair Javier Garro Barrio. The night continued with General Ordinary Assembly and concluded with a dinner dance.

This year’s annual Meeting will be held in Cuenca.

Switzerland

Dr. Roland Sollner has been certified by the Academy Board to serve as the new Section Chair.

Republic of Macedonia

Professor Branislav Dastevski has been named by the Academy Board as the new Chair for this new Section.

Guatemala/Belize

Chairman Bertram Moldauer organized a dental campaign to provide oral health care for the indigent in a remote part of Guatemala called Ipala in the Department of Chiquimula. This town was three hours away and located under the Ipala Volcano, whose crater holds a sacred lagoon. The dental team under Dr. Walter Lopez from the Francisco Marroquin University, which included PFA Fellow Dr Ivan Moldauer with three dental students, treated 300 patients in two days there. The town’s Mayor, Mr. Abelardo Pinto, thanked the entire team and Chairman Bertram Moldauer by phone. Dr. Bertram Moldauer supplied all the materials and equipment for this venture on behalf of his PFA Section.

Dr. Ivan Moldauer is attending the AEGD (endodontics) Program at Nova Southeastern University in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. His father, Chairman Bertram Moldauer, attended the eighth annual Investigation for Identification Educational Conference in Pensacola, Florida, organized by Fellow Dr. Phil Levine. Dr. Walter Lopez, President of the Guatemalan Academy of Pediatric Dentists; and Ury Roitman, President of Tikal Airlines who is also President of Techniques and Systems of Security of Guatemala and head security advisor for Mexico’s new President Vicente Fox. Francisco Marroquin University is initiating a program in forensic medicine and has appointed Dr. Levine to be Chairman of the program.

Virginia


The Distinguished Dentist of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Charles Cuttino by his wife Dr. Anne Adams and Chair William Bennett

Chair William Bennett held their annual Induction Ceremony and Awards Luncheon last September during the Virginia Dental Association’s Annual Meeting. Newly inducted Fellows were Gary Taylor of Portsmouth, Arthur Mourino of Richmond, Michael Dishman of Richmond, Mark Crabtree of Martinsville, and Henry Botuck of Alexandria.

Three Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia students were also honored. Dean Ron Hunt introduced Dwight Benlow who received the PFA Chapter Award; Tricia Trah who gave her winning table clinic research presentation and received a PFA Chapter Award; and Todd Pillion who received the Foundation Scholarship Award.

Fellow John Jobe of Newport News has passed away. Our condolences.

Arizona

Dr. Anita Elliot has been certified by the Academy Board as the new State Chairman.



Wisconsin

Chair Glenn Maihofer held the annual Luncheon Meeting last April during the Wisconsin Dental Association Session. Some 200 dignitaries attended, including 17 past WDA Presidents and the Marquette Dental School Dean. International Trustee James Englander was honored with the Distinguished Service Award. Several new Fellows were inducted, and the Foundation scholarship recipient thanked the Academy for her award.

The annual Mentorship Dinner was held last October at the Marquette University Alumni Union with more than 250 attending.

California, Southern Section

Foundation Treasurer, past PFA President George Higue, who surprised us all a few years ago by squiring Miss America to our New Orleans annual Meeting, is working on another possible surprise.

Colorado

Dr. Bonnie Ferrel has been selected by the Academy Board to serve as the new State Chair.

Idaho

Dr. Gregory Romriell has been installed as the State Chairman.

Nevada

Our Judy Kozal of the Central Office has been missed at our PFA functions as a result of her knee surgery. The September issue of the Nellis Air Force Base’s newspaper Bullseye pictures retired Colonel Kozal’s spouse doing physical therapy at the base just 21&Mac218;2 weeks after surgery. Soon we hope to have her back in our ranks.

Oklahoma

Chairman James Saddoris, past ADA President, reported that the Section held its annual Breakfast Meeting to induct two new Fellows. As he is retiring, Dr. William Goodman of Fairland will become the new Chairman for Oklahoma.

South Carolina

Dr. William Atkinson has been selected by the Academy Board to serve as the new State Chair.
