Past PFA President, and Foundation Treasurer, George Higue was highlighted in the recent issue of the USC Bulletin of the Dental Alumni Association TroDent. The article mentioned his receiving the PFA Gold Medal, the USC Alumnus of the Year Award, the USC Merit Torch Bearer Award (1993), the USC Alumni Service Award, and had just completed his $150,000 pledge to USCSD. There were so many awards Dr. Higue received that it took a half page of the magazine to list them. But the article captured the real essence of our profession that no job was too big for George Higue to tackle, in dentistry and in life.

International Hall of Fame

by Chairman Ray Klein

The International Hall of Fame of Dentistry is established under the auspices of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and is international in scope. Selection of recipients to the Hall of Fame will be made from eminent and qualified members of the profession or science in dentistry. Those selected should reflect distinguished service and be recognized by the dental profession throughout the world.

A dental candidate must be a graduate of a recognized and accepted dental school. The candidate must have been a dentist for a minimum of 20 years. The candidate must have shown outstanding qualities of leadership, as well as participation in (1) general dentistry or its specialties, (2) education, (3) research, (4) administration, (5) federal dental services, (6) community service, (7) international relations, (8) humanitarian service, and/or (9) public service.

The Hall of Fame Committee consists of a chairperson and six members from the PFA membership appointed by the President for a term of three years. Committee members may be reappointed once. The committee members must have served 20 years in the dental profession and be active in PFA. If there is a vacancy on the Committee, the President, with the approval of the Board, will appoint an interim member to complete the term. Absence or non-participation for two consecutive meetings without a valid reason will result in that member’s release from the Committee. A minimum notice of 30 days is required for all Committee meetings.

A qualified dental historian, selected by the Hall of Fame Committee with the approval of the PFA Board, may serve as a consultant to the Hall of Fame Committee.

The Committee Chair will be appointed by the PFA President for a three-year term. The Committee Secretary will be selected by the Committee itself.

The Committee proceedings will be confidential. The Committee may invite, receive, and consider all communications in reference to proposed recipients for the Hall of Fame. Those individuals being nominated for the Hall of Fame will have a detailed resume submitted to the PFA Board for approval of the nominee. All nominations for the Hall of Fame must be started by the Committee. Neither the process nor the initial approval should begin at the Board level.

International Dental Associations and dental honor societies may submit candidates to the Hall of Fame. But the International Hall of Fame is under the complete jurisdiction of the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

It is desirable to initiate candidates annually, but this is not mandatory. If the Committee is unable to decide on a candidate for that year, the evaluation process will continue on until one or more are selected. This is to maintain the high standards of selection.

The Hall of Fame recognition will be bestowed at an appropriate regional, national, or international dental meeting as approved by the PFA Board. The Committee is responsible for the organization of the recognition ceremony. A Hall of Fame plaque will be presented to an appropriate representative by the PFA President or his designee.

The current venue for the Hall of Fame is located in Paris to pay tribute to the heritage of Pierre Fauchard. Le Conseil National de l’Ordre des Chirurgien Dentistes is the home for the Wall of Fame.

The second location of the Hall of Fame is in the National Museum of Dentistry at the University of Maryland in Baltimore.

The current Walls of Fame display the plaques (in order of their recognition) for Pierre Fauchard of France, U.S. Drs. Harvey Burkhart, Horace Wells, G. V. Black, Harold Hillenbrand, Thomas Hinman, Horace Hayden, Chapin Harris, Charles Godon of France, Lindsey Pankey of the United States, James Wilmot of Canada, Robert Shira (the only living inductee), George Hollenback of the United States, and Gerald Leatherman of the United Kingdom.

Names under current consideration by the Committee are Drs. Terence Ward of the United Kingdom, Rafiuddin Ahmed of India, Morinsuke Chiwaki of Japan, and U.S. candidates Frederick McKay, Edward Angle, and Maynard Hine.
