Dr. Morinosuke Chiwaki was honored with Induction into the PFA International Hall of Fame during the Awards Luncheon of the 35th annual Meeting of the Japan Section in Tokyo last Autumn. Past PFA President Minoru Horiuchi, also an Honorary Member of the Japan Section, presented the Hall of Fame plaque honoring Dr. Chiwaki to Tokyo Dental College President Yuzuru Kaneko with over 100 Fellows in attendance. |
Many of those dental greats so honored at the Memorial Luncheon have since been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Dr. Morinosuke Chiwaki has been awaiting the right venue for such a permanent honor.

In 1900, he succeeded Dr. Kisai Takayama, Dean and Founder of the Takayama Dental School, which later became the Tokyo Dental College. Dr. Chiwaki served in that capacity until his retirement in 1943. |
Dr. Chiwaki was President of the Japan Odontological Society from 1912 to 1916. During that period, he also served as President of the Dental Section for the 4th Japan Medical Congress. The Emperor recognized his service to the dental profession by decorating him with the Fifth Degree of the Sacred Treasure in 1924. From the Desk of Foundation President Carl LundgrenOur Financial Team Is ApplaudedOur financial success has been implemented by three long-term people, aside from our Board, that we need to have you know more about. The Foundation was established in 1986 and a donation of $5 million was given us in 1994 by Dr. Brenes-Espinach of Costa Rica. Under the direction of our former Treasurer, Dr. George Higue, and the Board, the investment program, augmented by other donations, has been exceptionally lucrative and sound. Dr. Bill Kort is the current Treasurer. Over the last 10 years we have awarded, in grants and in scholarships, nearly $4 million. And we still have a Fair Market value of $7 million. |

To maximize our success as an international organization, we need to utilize many forms of communication and insure that all forms are serving identified needs appropriately. At our next meeting in March, your Management Team, in conjunction with Dr. James Brophy, Editor of the Academys publication, Dental World, will discuss the issues and concerns raised by the membership at the Orlando Meeting regarding the content of the publication. Our Web site and Dental World are two significant Academy expenses, and it is our goal to maximize our return on our investment for our members.

I now know for certain that Georgia’s 9th Congressional District and the 12th Congressional District have been lumped together. This puts me into a probable race against incumbent liberal Democrat John Barrow.

Europe’s Trustee Hubert Ouvrard (center) gives remarks with President-elect Howard Mark on the right and Section Chair for France Marie Boy-LeFevre on the left
Over the years since the Foundation’s inception, we have had some tremendously able leadership under Drs. Robert Shira and Carl Lundgren as Presidents, George Hique as Treasurer, and Shig Kishi and Fred Halik as our Executive Directors. They established such a firm basis for our Foundation that the Board of Trustees has been able to operate effectively right from the beginning. Their dedication to serving is unquestioned. Your Foundation would not be where it is today without their brilliant and unselfish devotion to our mission.
