Elmer S. Best Memorial Award

Montreal, Canada

The Awards Committee and the PFA Board have approved Dr. George Zarb, Professor-emeritus of the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry, to be the recipient of the 2005 Elmer S. Best Memorial Award at the PFA Dinner held during the FDI Congress Session in Montreal, Canada, this August.

Dr. Zarb is a humble man, but his resume would fill its own book, if he were to list all his activities and honours. He is the Director of the Graduate Prosthodontic Program and Implant Prosthodontic Unit for the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto. Prior to his retirement in June of 2004, Dr. Zarb was the full-time Chairman of Prosthodontics.

He has lectured nationally and internationally, written several papers on different aspects of prosthodontics, and co-authored some 13 textbooks, as well as contributing chapters to several others. He has organized and edited the published Proceedings from five international conferences and was co-editor of Oral Science Reviews. His current research is in the field of Implant Prosthodontics. He also has maintained a part-time private practice in Toronto since 1966.

He is the recipient of numerous awards and honours, including an Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden;

an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Dalhousie University (Canada); and an Honorary M.D. from his original alma mater, the University of Malta. He was the 1993 recipient of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Award for Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry. He also holds an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of England.

Dr. Zarb is past President of the International College of Prosthodontists, of the Academy of Prosthodontics (USA), and of the Association of Prosthodontists of Canada. He was recently appointed Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Prosthodontics.

Last year’s Elmer S. Best Memorial Award recipient, Dr. Zhen-Kang Zhang of Peking University School of Stomatology, has been invited to attend the Montreal Ceremony on 24 August 2005 by past PFA President Kevin Roach. Dr. Roach also suggested that PFA Vice President William Winspear of Sydney, Australia, International Trustee for Asia, Dr. Mamoru Sakuda of Japan, and Hong Kong Section Chair Jeffrey Y. S. Tsang would like to host a PFA cocktail reception at the 2006 FDI Congress in Shenzhen to introduce PFA to China. Dr. Zhang’s assistance in this venture would insure its success.

Dr. Richard F. Mascola was a fantastic individual. He fought for dentists’ rights all over the country as a strong and outspoken advocate for private practice. Having served from New York as the ADA President (1999-2000), he “retired” into teaching at Nova Southeastern Florida University College of Dental Medicine as Associate Professor and Director of the Dental Clinic.

He was a PFA Fellow and gave the keynote address at our Awards Luncheon last year in Orlando. His message was a unique call for us all to join forces and work in the entire world for the betterment of humanity’s dental problems. He told us to put aside our global differences and concentrate on humanitarian goals.

But time has a way of catching up with us all, and Dr. Mascola left us last May 28th. He was buried on June 11th in St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingham, New York. He had been living with his wife Betsy in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, when bi-lateral lung cancer felled this great man.

Dr. Mascola was known to many PFA fellows and their families. All of them have said such outstanding tributes to this selfless individual.

While at Nova, Dr. Mascola had befriended two students: PFA Fellow Dr. Ivan Moldauer, now a professor in the Endodontics Departmentt at Nova; and Maureen Roach, daughter of past PFA President Kevin Roach, who is now a dentist doing postgraduate studies in Colorado. Both could not say enough about how he took the time from his busy schedule to help them.

PFA Gold Medal

This year’s PFA Gold Medal recipient has been selected and approved by the Board to be presented to Dr. Dushanka V. Kleinman, Deputy Director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.

Dr. Kleinman is the newly named Assistant Director for Roadmap Coordination in the Office of the Director of NIH. She is the Deputy Director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) at the National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services; and the Chief Dental Officer of the United States Public Health Service. She graduated with her B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1969 and earned her D.D.S. degree from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry in 1973. Upon completing her dental degree, Dr. Kleinman did a Rotating Internship at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics in 1974. She then went on to receive her Master’s Degree in the Science of Dentistry in Dental Public Health from the Boston University Henry Goldman School of Dental Medicine in 1976.

Dr. Kleinman has served as an Assistant Professor for two years at the University of Maryland at the Baltimore School of Dentistry before receiving her commission in the United States Public Health Service in June of 1978. Her first assignment was with the Division of Dentistry in the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare’s Health Resources Administration as a dental surgeon participating in preventative dentistry and expanded duty dental auxiliary activities.

PFA Distinguished Service Award

This year’s PFA Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Dr. Jeremiah J. Lowney, Jr. of Norwich, Connecticut. Dr. Lowney is a graduate of Tufts University for his B.S. degree and Temple University School of Dental Medicine for his professional degree.

He also holds an M.S. degree in growth and development, a Certificate of Proficiency in Orthodontics from SUNY in Buffalo and another Masters degree in Public Health from the University of Connecticut (1966). He was honored by being awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters degree (honorary) from the University of Bridgeport (1989), and another from Quinnipiac University (1995).

Dr. Lowney served as Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy. As a Rotarian, he earned the 1984 Paul Harris Fellow for Rotary District #7980. He is also a former member and chairman of the City of Norwich Personnel and Pension Board, and he served a six-year term on the Board of Finance for the town of Lebanon. He currently sits on the Board of St. Joseph Living Center, the Eastern Connecticut A.H.E.C., and the Ray & Pauline Sullivan Foundation. He has served past Directorships for the Norwich Saving Society, Norwich Quinnebaug Unit of the American Cancer Society (with two terms as their President), and of the Norwich YMCA.

He has served as Trustee for the University of Connecticut (six years), the John Dempsey Hospital (as Board Chairman), and was a member of the State of Connecticut Board of Governors for Higher Education (15 years with four as Chairman). He currently serves on the Board of the Peoples Bank since 1997.

Professionally, Dr. Lowney is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Connecticut Department of Community Medicine. He is a Fellow in ICD and ACD, a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, and served two terms as President of the Connecticut State Society of Orthodontists.

Dr. Lowney was the founding President (1982) of the Haitian Health Foundation, which provides humanitarian and health care for 200,000 poor people of Haiti. This outreach now serves 105 rural villages with 175 employees and a budget of $2.5 million.

Pope John Paul II awarded him a Papal knighthood in 1988–Knight of St. Gregory. Dr. Lowney is also a Knight of Malta, and a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre.

Dr. Lowney’s list of honors and awards is long and varied. Among them are the Connecticut Jefferson Award, the Congressional Certificate of Merit, the New London County Bar Association Liberty Bell Award, the Humanitarian Award from the New York Academy of Dentistry, ACD’s Distinguished Service Award, the Connecticut State FONES Award, the University of Connecticut’s Distinguished Alumni Award, and the 1990 Eastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award.

Jeremiah and his wife Virginia have four children and 10 grandchildren.

PFA International Fellowship

The Awards Committee and the PFA board have approved of this International Fellowship be presented to Dr. Malvin Ring.

Dr. Malvin Ring

He was nominated by past PFA President and current Foundation Executive Director Fred Halik for this honor.

Dr. Ring graduated with a B.A. from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York in 1939. He then served in WWII before receiving his dental degree from St. Louis University School of Dentistry in 1946. He then served in the Korean Conflict and started a dental practice in Batavia, New York, before he went on to obtain a Masters of Library science in 1970.

His academic affiliations include the School of Dental Medicine, SUNY at Buffalo (1965 on); Associate Professor-emeritus in Dental History and Literature at SUNY-Buffalo, and Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Librarianship (1971-1975) at the State University College at Genesco.

Dr. Ring was the Editor of the Journal of the History of Dentistry. He is the author of Dentistry–an Illustrated History.This work has been published in six languages. It is the only book in dentistry to have been reviewed in the New York Times.

Dr. Ring has appeared on the Larry King Show, the Today Show, NOVA, PBS’ Morning Edition, and Canadian TV’s Lifetime. He has spoken on 18 radio talk shows and delivered more than 60 professional papers before various dental groups in six different countries. He is a Fellow in ACD, earned the Hayden-Harris Award from the American Academy of History of Dentistry, the “Visionary Dentist of the Millennium” Award from the American Students Dental Association (1999), and is listed in Who’s Who in the East, in the International Biographical Dictionary, and in the Dictionary of Educators.

He started life in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1919. Dr. Ring and his wife Hilde have been married for 29 years and have two children.

Dental Trade & Industry Award

The annual Dental Trade & Industry Award of Recognition has been approved for the G. C. Corporation, whose President and CEO is Makoto Nakao of Tokyo. The company was nominated for this high honor by International Trustee Mamoru Sakuda of Japan.

Mr. Nakao is a diligent gentleman who has made many various contributions to the development of modern dentistry worldwide. His company received the 2004 Japan Quality Medal for the recognized excellence of his products. This is not an easy award to earn. His company must demonstrate total quality management-focused activity for at least three years after winning the Deming Prize. Since 1970, only 18 companies in Japan have achieved this award.

Born in 1948, Makoto Nakao finished his doctorate in the Department of Studies of Science and Technology at the Graduate School of Waseda University in 1976. In 1974, he had joined G. C. Dental Industrial Corporation, rising to become President and CEO of the now G. C. Corporation in 1983.

He has served as President of the International Dental Manufacturers (IDM) from 1994 to 1996. In 1997 until 2001, he was President of the Japan Dental Industry Council. Before that, he had been an officer on the Japan Research Council on Dental Products (1984–present), Director for the Japanese Society for Dental Materials and Devices (1985–present), President of the Japan Dental materials Manufacturers Association (1992), was awarded honorary membership in the ADA (1996), made the List of Honor for the Asia Pacific Dental Federation (2000) and Honorary Member of ICD–USA Section in 2000.

Makoto Nakao was honored in 1995 with Commander of the Order of the Crown of Belgium, awarded the Japanese Society for Dental materials and Devices Prize in 2002, and was certified as a Person of Merit for Japanese Pharmaceutical Affairs by the Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

His company, under his leadership, has adopted the policy of providing environmentally safe dental products, made with earth-friendly processes that are people friendly and fill the needs of the dental practitioner. G. C. Corporation was established in 1921 based on three management principles—contributing to the environment and society by improving oral hygiene, improving the corporate quality to meet the customers’ expectations, and forming a team of associates striving to improve respect for their fellow man.

From the Office of Congressman Charlie Norwood…

I now know for certain that Georgia’s 9th Congressional District and the 12th Congressional District have been lumped together. This puts me into a probable race against incumbent liberal Democrat John Barrow.

In order to continue to be dentistry’s representative on the floor of the House, I will need your support. You sent me to Washington to fight for you and to be your voice in Congress. You know I have been there for our profession each and every time. And I am still fighting.

In the next few weeks, I will reintroduce the CLEAR Act, which would enlist our State and local law enforcement in the fight to combat criminal illegal aliens. Rather than put illegal aliens in prison at taxpayers’ expense, my bill would deport them immediately.

The project is called “Bridge the Gap” and it involves a modest group of 10 plastic and maxillofacial surgeons, an anesthetist, and two dentists—all based in The Netherlands. Its aim is to teach and train the surgeons of the National Hospital of Maxillo-Facial Surgery in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in Viet Nam to perform cleft palate and facial related surgery.
For unknown reasons, Viet Nam and Laos have a high incidence of children born with a cleft lip, jaw, and palate disorder. This disorder prevents these people from normal speech, breathing, and eating along with the unattractive facial deformity that condemns them to be social outcasts. With the exception of this deformity, the patients are otherwise normal. However, sufficient knowledge to operate on these patients is missing in these areas of Southeast Asia.

Dr. J.R.D. Backer first met with Professor Lam Ngoc An, Director of the Maxillo-Facial Institute, in 1994 as a guest of the Vietnamese Dental Association and the Academy of Dentistry International.

Half a year later, Dr. Backer introduced his “Sharing of Knowledge” idea and won the support of KLM Airlines. With their financial help, he was able to assemble a small team of Dutch surgical specialists to begin a working relationship with the Viet Nam Institute; and to introduce a group of Vietnamese surgeons, young specialists, nursing staff and operation assistants to The Netherlands. This established a formal working relationship between the Medical Faculty of Ho Chi Minh City and the University of Amsterdam. Thus, the “Bridge the Gap” Foundation was born.
Besides the goal of training Vietnamese surgeons, the Bridge the Gap Foundation assisted the Viet Nam dental school in organizing a children’s department, a preventative care department, and create scientific outlines for monitoring surveys.

By 2000, the Foundation had established a contract and protocol with the Ho Chi Minh City dental school to provide these treatments to children. Their Foundation also assists in providing new and modern medical and dental equipment to the hospital and dental school.

Another stumbling block was that the Viet Nam Institute had to charge their patients about $50 to cover the costs. The Foundation made arrangements to cover these costs and to be able serve the neediest of the needy. In some cases, this meant traveling out to the farthest provinces to operate on those children who could not possibly come to the Institute for treatment. Over the last decade, some 1500 patients have been treated and nine qualified Vietnamese surgeons have been trained.

In 1999, tremendous floods in Quang Nam Province washed away much of their equipment and supplies. The Bridge the Gap Foundation team worked in that province in 2000 and were impressed by the situation and wanted to help. In 2001, the Foundation shipped dental units and x-ray machines, along with other equipment, to Viet Nam to help restore the situation in Quang Nam.
The Netherlands Embassy in Hanoi, the Netherlands Consulate in Mo Chi Ming City, and the Viet Nam Embassy in The Hague have greatly helped out.

In 2003, the team worked in Saigon and Chau Doc. In 2004, they continued at those sites. By 2005, the team worked at My Tho.
Currently, their assessment is that after 10 years of surgery and training, Viet Nam has enough skills to solve their own medical problems. So, the Dutch team went to Laos, visiting Vientiane, their capitol. They have aimed to have an agreement signed with the University Hospital Mahosot with the approval of the government for 2006.
The Bridge the Gap Foundation, for which Dr. Backer is Secretary, has no political, racial, or subversive motives for this project. It is just professional fun, a scientific exchange of knowledge, and working together with our highly valued colleagues in Southeast Asia.

While the deadline for the 2005 Grant Applications to be submitted in their final form to the Foundation Grants Chairman is long past, the work of the Foundation Trustees has begun in earnest. The grants received in approved form, have been reproduced, distributed to designated separate groups of the Trustees, and are being reviewed for presentation at the Annual Foundation Board Meeting in Philadelphia this October. The Grants Chairman will compile the reports of the separate designated Trustees for a general presentation to the Board as a whole. The Board will review the grant applications and determine which ones to fund and at what amount.

With this year’s long-term bonds program catching up on the reduced interest rate, our fair market value of the principal has diminished. Thus, the turnover rate has resulted in a lower interest yield of about a 4% loss. This will need to be reflected in reducing the amount of funds available in awarding to the grants.

The October Foundation Board Meeting will be a difficult one for the Trustees and their red markers to try to meet our expectations for funding as many grants and for what amounts.

The Board and their financial advisors have seen this coming and have decided on a two-fold plan.

One part of the plan is to convert from a nearly exclusive long-term, high interest bond investment program to a diversified equity portfolio. There will be some expected volatility in these investments, but history tells us to expect the equity market to swing to the positive side. This change in focus could only have been achieved after the high-interest bonds came due. And that is what the excellent stewards of the Foundation have been closely following to make the conversion as these bonds were called in.

The second part of the plan is to expand the capital base through a fundraising effort. Past PFA President C.F. Larry Barrett has undertaken this project, which has already produced some success. Once his program is in place and finalized, your Foundation will be asking for your help to achieve this expansion of our capital base through your generosity.

But between our 10 years of high interest bond yields and this year’s switch to a comparable yield equity portfolio, due to the lower bond market interest rates, we are going to need some sharp pencil work and your increased generosity to continue the excellent work the Foundation has achieved over the last decade.

California, Southern Section

Last year’s grant to the UC-San Diego Student-Run Free Dental Clinic Project of San Diego was highly acclaimed by last year’s October issue of the ADA News. The UCSD Pre-dental Program encourages students with an interest in dentistry to get involved with mentoring, education, and volunteerism by providing these individuals with a “hands-on” experience with dentists. The project is run by Dr. Irvin Silverstein with about a 60-person core group. It involves the students into learning about dentistry, serving as volunteers, reaching out to the community schools with oral hygiene instructions, learning about dental student life, and a variety of other dentally related subjects. The success rate of students choosing dentistry as a profession in 2003 was 53 were accepted into some dental school and 13 entered UCSD School of Dentistry

The project operates three local health care centers with the newly renovated Pacific Beach Clinic opening last April. PFA was listed as one of the contributors that have made this possible, along with the ADA Foundation, the California Dental Association Foundation, Delta Dental of California, Dentsply International, and Sullivan-Schein Dental. In fact, the keynote speaker at the UCSD opening of the Pacific Beach Dental Clinic, held at the UCSD School of Medicine, was UOP’s dental school Dean Art Dugoni.

Nebraska

Chair Francis Cavolvic introduced the Foundation 2005 Scholarship recipients at their annual Luncheon Meeting last April in Lincoln. The student recipients were Lenny Hopper of the UNMC College of Dentistry and Albert Zambito of Creighton University Medical Center.

Oklahoma

Chair William Goodman hosted their annual Breakfast last April, where the Oklahoma College of Dentistry Dean (and PFA Fellow) presented the Foundation Scholarship Award to dental student Mike Wallace. Aaron Bulleigh was presented the PFA student Achievement Award.

Oregon

Dr. Phyllis Beemsterboer, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry in Portland, reported that Dean Jack Clinton presented the Foundation Scholarship Award to dental student Sterling Card last May.

Past PFA President and current Foundation Treasurer William Kort attended the University of Illinois School of Dentistry’s Honors Day to present the PFA Foundation Scholarship Award to dental student Siddhi Doshi.

Chair S. G. Damle hosted their 18th annual Convocation and Awards Ceremony of the PFA India Section at the Hotel Goldfinch in Bangalore last January. The Senate and the General Body Meetings were held after the Convocation. Secretary/Treasurer T. Samraj reported that Chairman Dr. Subash Chandra Shetty adorned the Chairman’s collar and declared the Convocation “open.” He introduced the Chief Guest Dr. S. Ramanand Shetty, Director of Medical Education for the government of Karnataka. Secretary T. Samraj then introduced the 17 new Inductees for membership whose Certificates of Fellowship were then presented by the Chief Guest. The PFA medallions were presented by the Chairman. The PFA pins were then presented by the International Honorary Fellow, Dr. Major General Kartar Singh. And the Journal of the PFA India Section was given them by Chief Editor Dr. V. P. Jalili.

The Chief Guest then presented the PFA International Senior Student Awards to Dr. S. T. Srinivasa Gowda (2003) of the A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences in Mangalore, to Dr. Rupinder Kaur (2003) of the Christian Dental College in Ludhiana, and to Dr. Ranjana Gupta (2003) of the Ragas Dental College in Chennai. The PFA International Certificates of Merit were then awarded to Dr. N.Rajeev Shetty (1996) and to the late Dr. B. Srinivasan (2003) posthumously.

The Chief Guest gave the keynote address to the newly inducted Fellows outlining the work of Dr. Pierre Fauchard. He challenged them to emulate his footsteps. Dr. Shiva Shankar gave the Response. The Convocation Dinner and Awards Ceremony was compeered by Ms. Bhawana with some 75 in attendance.

California, Northern Section

PFA Fellow Dr. Marc Geissberger, an Associate Professor at the University of the Pacific’s Art Dugoni School of Dentistry, has been appointed as Chairman of the Department of Restorative Dentistry. During his 14-year career at UOP, Dr. Geissberger is credited for initiating innovative programs, instituting curricular changes, academically and clinically, and created a group practice mentor model. He established the dental school’s Clinical Excellence Day and the Future Educators’ Night for students interested in dental teaching. He additionally founded the dental school’s Aesthetic Dentistry Clinic.

Currently, Dr. Geissberger serves as President-elect of Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society’s Supreme Chapter, as Treasurer of the Dental Alumni Association and a Board member for the University Council of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry.

PFA has honored Dr. Geissberger with its Excellence in Student Leadership Award and its Faculty Recognition Award, among the many awards Dr. Geissberger has received since earning his dental degree in 1991.

Dean Art Dugoni, also a PFA Fellow, stated, “I am deeply appreciative of his outstanding role and continuing commitment to make sure that our students become the best they can be.”

California, Southern Section

International Trustee Charles Eller reports holding their 35th Annual awards luncheon last may in Anaheim during the California Dental Association’s Scientific Session. Our PFA Section honored the ADA’s Immediate Past President Eugene Sekiguchi of Monterey Park, California, with their PFA Honor Award. Dr. Sekiguchi is Associate Dean for International and Legislative Affairs for USC’s School of Dentistry. He also has served as past President of the California Dental Association and of the San Gabriel Valley Dental Society. He is also a Fellow in PFA, ICD, and ACD. Two of Gene and Claire’s children, Kevin and Jill, are dentists.

PFA International President Michael Perpich gave a talk on our mission in the world and past PFA President Carl Lundgren, Foundation President, gave a report of the Foundation. Dr. Cherilyn Sheets gave an address on “The Foundation Grants in Action.” Her group, The Children’s Dental Center of Inglewood, had received a grant last year from the Foundation.

California, Southern Section Continued...

Other Southern California groups receiving Foundation grants are The Thousand Smiles Foundation of Chula Vista by Drs. Tanaka and Vernetti, the MEND Dental Clinic of Pacoima under Dr. David Campbell, the St. Vincent de Paul Village Dental Clinic of San Diego under Dr. Michael Ward, and the UC-San Diego Student Run Free Dental Clinic of San Diego under Dr. Irvin Silverstein.

The Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards were presented by our President Michael Perpich to Dr. Robert Allan Handysides of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, to Dr. Russell D. Nishimura of UCLA’s School of Dentistry, and to Dr. Eddie Sheh of USC’s School of Dentistry.

The PFA Foundation Student Awards were presented to Marcus A. Paulson by Loma Linda University School of Dentistry’s Dean Charles Goodacre, to Elena Yurushalmi by UCLA School of Dentistry’s Dean No-Hee Park, and to Erik Bartolome by USC School of Dentistry’s Dean Harold Slavkin.

The Induction of new nine Fellows into the Academy was performed by PFA President Michael Perpich and Section Editor William Mihram. Those being inducted were Drs. Monica Bruce of Los Angeles, Clelan G. Ehrler of Rialto, James Klusmier of Fullerton, Lilia Larin of National City, Kenneth J. Jacobs of Beverly Hills, Stephen M. Lodeski of Arcadia, Ronald Malouf of Cypress, Philip B. Potter of San Clemente, and Barbara Young of San Diego.

The California, Southern Section, Officers are Chair Charles Eller, Vice Chair Frank T. Curry, past Chair Steven H. Ferriot, and Editor William L. Mihram.

The Section also donated a $1000 grant in memoriam of International Trustee Bernardo Levit of Argentina to Dr. Debra Palmer of Racine, Wisconsin. Dr. Palmer is this year’s recipient of the Wisconsin Section’s Distinguished Service Award. She is currently working on an Argentina dental project.

They also presented a donation to the U.S.S. Midway, which is retired in the San Diego Harbor. This contribution is for rehabilitating its shipboard dental clinic. Last month, the ship’s museum hosted its one millionth visitor. This project is headed by Dr. Roger Zibbettz, a PFA Fellow.

Connecticut

Section Chairman William MacDonnell with PFA President-elect Howard Mark, International Trustee Richard Walsh, and Fellow Jeremiah Lowney presented their 2005 Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Marc Craig last May at their annual Meeting with over 40 members present. Dr. Marc Craig was honored for his dedication and service to the indigents of Haiti where he has worked for 10 years in Jeremia, Haiti, the site of the Haitian Health Foundation’s Clinic and Medical Center founded by Dr. Jeremiah Lowney a quarter of a century ago.

Pamela Sawyer, a Republican representative from Bolton, spoke at the luncheon, giving insights into the political process in Connecticut She is the daughter of dentist Edward Zeigler of Rhode Island who also was in attendance.

Dr. Margaret Smith, the Director of the Generations Dental Collaborative in Willimantic, spoke about the “Smiles for the Quiet Corner” Project she heads and for which the Foundation had funded a grant last year.

Illinois

Past PFA President William Kort attended the University of Illinois School of Dentistry’s Honors Day to present our Aca-demy’s Student Achievement Award to Michael Albazzaz.

Maryland

The Dr. Samuel Harris National Museum of Dentistry in association with the Smithsonian Institution has been recognized as an “authentic Baltimore site” by the Baltimore City heritage Area. Baltimore Mayor Martin O’Malley made the official announcement last May. It becomes one of the 33 sites, services, and events so recognized. Other such sites include Babe Ruth’s Birthplace and Museum, Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, and the Jewish Museum of Baltimore.

The National Dental Museum is celebrating its 10th anniversary. In 2003, NDM had been designated by the 108th Congress as “the official museum of dentistry.” On the campus of the University of Maryland-Baltimore, the Dental Museum is partly housed in the nation’s first school of dentistry. NDM is also one of the first venues for the PFA Wall of Fame in the United States.

Nebraska

Secretary/Treasurer Gary Westerman reports Chairman Francis Cavolvic held their annual Luncheon Meeting last April at the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln during the 137th annual Session of the Nebraska Dental Association. Dr. Cavolvic conducted the business meeting. He read a review of the History and Objectives of the Academy and discussed the interest in participating in a student-mentoring program with the two dental schools in Nebraska—Creighton and the University of Nebraska.

New Fellows were inducted during the ceremony part of the meeting and they were Drs. Dean Cope, Fred Diedrichsen, William Kathrein, Kevin Low, and Jack Wesch. A short biographic sketch was read on each of them, followed by the Oath of Membership and distribution of membership certificates and pins.

The PFA Foundation Scholarship recipients were introduced, as well as the visiting Nebraska Dental Association Officers that dropped by.

Nevada

Dr. and Mrs. Jose Dahan, Section Chair of Belgium/Luxembourg, visited the Central Office and the PFA Dental History Museum in Las Vegas on their way to attend an orthodontics meeting in San Francisco.

Oklahoma

Section Chair William Goodman hosted their annual Breakfast and Convocation Meeting last April. PFA International President Michael Perpich gave the main address.

Colonel Phillip Abshere was presented their Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Abshere earned his dental degree at the Oklahoma University College of Dentistry, where he served as Class President in his sophomore, junior, and senior years. He received awards in operative dentistry and periodontology, and he was an honor student in prosthodontia, pedodontics, and endodontics as well. He was presented at that time with the College’s Leadership Award.

Dr. Abshere is active in all the ladder dental organizations and has served as President of the Oklahoma State Dental Society, as an ADA Delegate, and as a U.S. Air Force pilot. He was the leader on the forensics team at the Murrah Federal Building bombing in 1995. He was also the lead dentist in the Vukovar, Croatia, investigation of the Ovcara mass graves. He has received many military awards and is ANG/SGD Air National Guard Surgeon General for dentistry.

Rhode Island

Section Chair Richard Walsh (and PFA International Trustee) with PFA President-elect Howard Mark presented the Rhode Island Distinguished Service Award to Shirley Spalter last May at their annual Meeting at the Warwick Crowne Plaza Hotel. Dr. Spalter was honored for her dedication and service in attending to the dental needs of specially challenged and disabled patients in her position as Director of the dental clinic at the Rhode Island Hospital. Her parents and brother attended the ceremony as well.

Wisconsin

Chair Glenn Maihofer held their annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon last May at the Hilton Hotel in Milwaukee. Honored during the ceremonies was Dr. Debra Palmer for her many years of service to the poor and indigent throughout the world. Dr. Maihofer, with the assistance of International Trustee James Englander, presented her with their 2005 Distinguished Service Award.

Trustee James Englander discussed the Academy’s service programs and those grants funded by the Foundation. He encouraged the Wisconsin Section to develop an appropriate program to serve the needy population in Wisconsin. Dr. Englander also introduced International Trustee Charles Eller from

California, who was in attendance for his 50th Class Reunion at Marquette University School of Dentistry. Marquette’s dental school Dean William Lobband Dr. Fred Jaeger, President of the Wisconsin Dental Association, discussed the PFA-Marquette dental school-Wisconsin Dental Association’s Award winning Mentorship Program before a crowd of some 100 attendees, including 14 WDA past Presidents.

ADA Trustee Kathy Roth addressed the many challenges facing our Association in dealing with problems on the national level.

The management committee continues to communicate with quarterly conference calls and has the finances for the Academy in great shape. The Kozals continue to hold down the Central Office and make it easy for officers to do their job. I would also like to mention the fantastic job our Editor Jim Brophy does with Dental World. While we are on the leading edge with electronic communication, the Academy’s written journal is second to none. Great job, Jim!

As I leave the Presidency, I am extremely confident in the abilities of the upcoming officers. Drs. Mark, Windspear, and Englander will continue to lead the Academy to its next level.

In closing, I have always wanted to be a dentist, but never in my wildest dreams did I think I would become President of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. It has been a great run, a privilege, and an honor to serve the Academy. I will continue to give my support when needed.

This year was the bi-annual trip to visit the active European Sections in Belgium and in France. Belgium/Luxembourg Section Chair Jose Dahan has always been an active leader in Europe through his many contacts and in PFA with his many innovative ideas. Spending time with him and his wife and his Section members is always a morale boost to begin any trip to Europe.

Visiting France was important because of the several leadership changes made there. European Trustee Pierre Marois had resigned at the end of the last PFA International Board Meeting, recommending that Dr. Hubert Ouvrard, Section Chair for France, be appointed to fill the European Trustee position; and Paris Dental School No. VII Dean Marie Laure Boy-LeFevre had been elected to fill the Section Chair position for France.

In both cases, it was important for Trustee-emeritus Pierre Marois to introduce the new officers and to discuss PFA with leading Academy Officers on a personal basis.

The officers assigned to make these important contacts were the incoming International PFA President Howard Mark and the existing International Editor James Brophy. As President, Dr. Mark would be dealing with them all from afar. The personal contact now was essential to put a face to the name. Editor Brophy had made this trek before, knew the people involved, and would be reporting on their activities in future issues. Renewing the comradeship assured all that the Academy was particularly supportive of their coming leadership roles.

In addition to the important Paris meetings, Dr. Mark was to place the newly inducted Hall of Fame members on the Wall of Fame located at Le Conseil de l’Ordre des Chirurgiens Dentistes of Paris Headquarters, meet their relatively new President Dr.Yves Mahe, and induct several new Fellows into the Academy.

The Management Team

This all came about through the subtle but important leadership changes brought about over the last few years by the Academy’s Executive Committee. While the Executive Committee’s name change to the Management Team might have appeared as a modernized window dressing, a very specific difference between the two concepts is real. Though many of the effects of the Management Team are the same as the previous Executive Committee, the practical difference is that the Executive Committee was a hierarchy of officers with the President taking the lead in assigning and doing the major workload. Now the “Team” concept, which has been used for the last few years, encompasses all the officers jointly discussing the issues as equals, sharing the workload, and executing their parts of the decisions together.

We have seen excellent examples in the modernization of our documents—the Constitution, the Bylaws, the Policy Manual, and Financial Planning. But many of these decisions do not seem to be a glaring impact to the general membership, though in reality they are.

This year, a more practical example of the impact the Management Team is having is evidenced by all the officers sharing in the visitations to attend more Section events throughout the PFA World.

An early example of this was sending past PFA President Gary Lowder to the Anniversary Meeting of the Mexican Dental Association where he was able to address the Convention in their native tongue—Spanish. This was very well received by the Mexican Dental Association. In the past, the current President would have attended, spoken in English, only to be later translated into Spanish. That result would have highlighted our language differences, perhaps even our cultural ones, between neighboring Sections.

Dr. Lowder’s speech in Spanish had the effect of bringing our Academy closer together. It implied that PFA cared enough about the Mexican Section’s important event to send an international dignitary to speak to them directly in their own language. This further demonstrated the internationality of our global Academy.

That similar, though perhaps not as obvious, policy has continued through the past years of international officers. While the positions rotate and the titles change, the thought processing of the Management Team has remained a unifying force in the leadership of the Academy. It provides for agreed continuity in foresight, planning, and execution of policy for more than one year.

This year was another excellent example of the tremendous impact that this policy is having on our world relationships. President Mike Perpich, with his many professional and family duties, has handled many in-country trips to various Section events. Normally, he would have attended the biannual visit to Europe. But the Management Team discussed how to make the best impact with this trip and selected President-elect Howard Mark to make the voyage.

Dr. Howard Mark is the incoming President in October of this year. Thus, this trip gave him the opportunity to meet with the always-exciting Belgium/Luxembourg Chairman Jose Dahan, on his own home turf, to discuss Dr. Dahan’s many ambitious ideas for his Section. This was also an opportunity for the incoming PFA President to hear ideas firsthand, while Dr. Mark had time to plan his year’s agenda.

Dr. Mark had the chance to review the European scene with retiring European Trustee Pierre Marois, get to know socially and fraternally the new incoming Trustee for Europe, Dr. Hubert Ouvrard, and for all of us to meet the dynamic new French Section Chair, Dean Marie-Laure Boy-Lefevre. Installing the new Wall of Fame plaques at the Hall of Fame venue in a ceremony at the headquarters of Le Conseil de l’Ordre des Chirurgiens Dentistes in Paris, further provided Dr. Mark the opportunity to enjoy the company of our friend, former Conseil President Dr. Andrè Robert, and open new relations with the Conseil’s current President Yves Mahe. During this time, both were able to update our President-elect on the effectiveness of their mobile dental clinic that the PFA Foundation has helped to fund, which serves the dental needs of the indigent in and around Paris. Our hosted PFA Section reception with many French Fellows at their headquarters renewed the close relationship that former Trustee Pierre Marois had established over the decades.

The Foundation-funded mobile dental clinic had been servicing the dentally indigent in a Paris suburb when it returned in the late afternoon to the Conseil headquarters, but most of the Fellows had left the reception due to its late return.

Both in Belgium and in France, the ever-gracious Dr. Mark personally met and discussed PFA with many of our Fellows there who would probably never have been able to make that contact otherwise. And Dr. Mark’s wife, Sheila, made friends everywhere with her ability to discuss issues in their native French.

Thus, we have an incoming PFA President meeting and greeting our Fellows in their own countries to discuss mutual goals for PFA for the coming year. Dr. Mark listened intently while enjoying their company. It was love at first sight for them all. And at no time could we have been prouder to have such a caring, concerned President-elect in Dr. Mark, who was so well received everywhere. The relationship for the coming year was cemented in shared laughter and good times spent together. PFA was not just a magazine, not just a local project to get involved in, not merely a dues notice. PFA was epitomized by a gracious, personable President who listened and conversed about the values we all share as professionals and what we could do together about them.

All Over Belgium

8–13 June 2005

Professor Dahan and his gracious wife Mariethe escorted our entourage all through his country. Due to airline scheduling, Editor Brophy and photographer Shirley Brophy came in Wednesday, 8 June 2005. Mariethe picked them up at the airport and brought them to Dr. Dahan’s dental office, where they stayed in a hotel across the street.

That evening, Drs. Dahan and Brophy and their wives went over the program Professor Dahan had arranged for his Section and our visit (after discussing several unique dental cases in Dr. Dahan’s office).

The next day, Dr Howard and Sheila Mark arrived and we moved to our usual headquarters at the Hotel Conrad. That day, we toured Brussels and had a quiet evening dinner, meeting with all the guests to discuss the itinerary and events scheduled.

Friday we were up early to take the train to a Brussels suburb to meet with Mariethe (to avoid the congested city traffic). Dr. Mark led us through the maze as though he had lived there all his life. We toured Professor Dahan’s University where he teaches and then off to the old, beautiful city of Leuven.

Dr. Dahan had scheduled a tour of the Belgium Parliament with Belgium Senator Olivier de Clippelle and his wife. After the government tour, Senator Clippelle, a third-generation Belgian official, took us to lunch for further discussion about their government workings. Too often we forget that other cultures have different types of government restraints on our profession. Belgium is a multi-cultural country speaking Flemish, French, and German—in a few provinces. The move to unify the country with one language was answered by a compromise with some dental schools speaking Flemish and others French. (But everyone seems to understand English.)

For the evening, we dined with the Belgium Section officers and leaders at Maison du Cygne on the Grand Plaza. There Dr. Mark addressed their Section members on the use of the Foundation grants and scholarships.

We all left Saturday for the University of Liege (a few kilometers from the German border) at their Dental School Policliniques Universitaires, Lucien Brull School, Quai Godefoid Kurth, located along the river. There Drs. Howard Mark, Jose Dahan, and Professor Michael Limme presented the 2000 Foundation Scholarship award to Dr. Sylviane Raskin.

Professor Dahan and Editor Brophy stayed for the symposium on “Sleep Disorders and Apnea,” while the rest of our entourage toured Liege. The seminar was given by Professor Dr. R. Poirrier of Liege, Professor Dr. J. Krieger of Strasbourg, Professor W. Bacon of Strasbourg, and Dr. Sylviane Raskin.

The evening brought us all together at a local restaurant on the river for the “Official Supper” of the Belgian/Luxembourg Section.

Dr. Mark inducted new Fellows into membership during their ceremony, which includes a choral arrangement after the initiation by the new members. Our new Fellows are Drs. Odile Hutereau, Sylviana Raskin, Sabine Geerts, Jean-Claude Dabee, and Professor Michael Limme.

Dr. Mark then presented the PFA’s Honorary Membership of Merit Award to Dr. Bernard Henin. Dr. Henin is particularly revered for his work in accomplishing finalizing orthodontics as a specialty in Belgium, where it had not been before.

Our President-elect addressed the crowd of Fellows and guests on “Aims and Commitments of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and its Foundation.” He particularly stressed the importance to us all about getting involved.

On Sunday, Dr. & Mrs. Mark accepted the offer of a couple of Fellows to tour Mechelen. Chair Jose and Mariethe left for his orthodontic practice in Switzerland, and Editor Brophy and Shirley left to interview Pierre Marois in Paris.

Section Chair Jose Dahan had beautifully crafted an excellent program that involved Fellows all around his country by hosting two meetings with them in different locales, helped sponsor a continuing education symposium with more than 100 in attendance, enlightened us all on the Belgian government by a Senator, and introduced us to the beauty that is his country.

President-elect Howard and Sheila Mark arrived by train on Monday and settled into the hotel across the street. Drs. Mark, Marois, Brophy, and their wives had a dinner meeting that evening to plan the upcoming events.

Wednesday was the Hall of Fame Ceremony at the headquarters of Le Conseil National de l’Ordre des Chirurgiens Dentistes in Paris. Conseil President Yves Mahe opened the ceremony with an introductory address.

European Trustee Hubert Ouvrard thanked President Mahe for his kind remarks and for inviting the PFA Section to the Conseil National headquarters to hold their ceremonies. He then introduced his successor as Section Chair for France, Dean Marie Laure Boy-LeFevre. Dr. Ouvrard gave apologies for President Michael Perpich’s absence for familial reasons, but stated that such reasons are as important in France as they are in the United States.

President-elect Howard Mark also gave regrets from PFA President Michael Perpich before going into history of the two Wall of Fame plaques memorializing two renowned individuals in Dr. Frederick S. McKay of the United States, and Dr. Morinosuke Chiwaki of Japan. From their work, we are able to “build upon their gifts for the betterment on mankind.” Dr. Mark then read the citations for both dentists whose new plaques had been placed on the Wall of Fame in their headquarters meeting room.

Dr. Pierre Marois

At last year’s PFA Board Meeting, our longest-serving International Trustee tendered his resignation. Pierre Albert Jacques Marois of Paris, France, had represented the European (and some North African) PFA Sections on the International PFA Board since his 1983 appointment by then PFA President General Robert Shira, a long-time friend. Pierre had become a Fellow in 1954 and began contributing by building the PFA Section in France. As Trustee for Europe, Dr. Marois added to and strengthened the Academy in that area. Those activities alone might have given him quite a prominence in the annals of the Academy. But Dr. Marois was a person of even greater dimension.

“I gladly accepted the challenge Dr. Shira had given me. I had to build Europe from scratch, but I enjoyed every minute of it,” Dr. Marois stated at his PFA retirement dinner last October. “To be a Trustee for 20 years was a constant pleasure. It gave me the opportunity to meet fascinating people, ambitious people, devoted people and all kinds of characters.” Many times, Dr. Marois passed the opportunity of being elected PFA’s International President stating that “being the European Trustee was a constant pleasure” he did not want to give up.

In one’s life, a person is fortunate indeed to meet about a half dozen special individuals who are recognized not only for the use of their abilities and talents, but the quality with which they reach out and touch everyone around them. Pierre Marois is just such a man. When one examines the eight-decade span of his life, the reader is impressed. But when each of us has been touched by this outstanding person, we discover the true inner meaning of the term, “A Man for All Ages.” That phrase has been used so often, but in each case with true meaning. Your editor has known this professional man and his equally brilliant, and very understanding, wife, Seba, for some 15 years.

None of us knew Dr. Marois’ fellow countryman Pierre Fauchard, except by reputation. So to us, professional dentistry, French concern for our profession, and outstanding leadership are all embodied in our Pierre—Dr. Marois. To us, France is Pierre Marois. To PFA, Pierre Fauchard is our namesake.

But Pierre Marois is who made PFA an outstanding professional European honor service organization. Pierre Fauchard established dentistry as a modern profession. Pierre Marois established dentistry as a leading confederation of Section Fellows who perform over and above their regular dental schedules by going out to the indigent and dentally handicapped. This contribution of our Academy goes beyond the scope Fauchard’s dreams.

Pierre Marois is who he seems to be—an intelligent, thoughtful person, humble in his self assurance of what he has accomplished, while at the same time encompassing compassion and love for all those that he touches and continues to help along life’s pathway. Pierre is on a first name basis with organized dentistry’s world Leaders, yet he is never too busy to interrupt his work to help a student.

Never one to brag, or to embellish bigger-than-life stories, a writer attempting to chronicle his life must dig out the sensational events that course through this remarkable man’s existence. They are not extracted easily through his aura of humility. The stories of some of his life’s non-dental episodes during the tumultuous times of the last century he will not relate for fear of offending someone.

Pierre did not want them to be any type of hallmark in his life’s record. He did not want them to be a part of distracting from his dedication to his profession. He chose to be a dental professional. The other activities chose him to be a part of their history. Those stories he wishes to be buried, but it is sufficient to say that he has probably seen as much combat action as General Shira.

Pierre was born in Algers, Algeria (then a French possession across the Mediterranean in North Africa). His father, Dr. Ernest Marois, was a physician. Pierre finished high school in Lyon, France, just as World War II began to engulf the continents, one country at a time. Pierre served his country well. However, like many citizen warriors across the world of that time, his modesty and memory refuse to relive those horrors.

By 1948, Pierre had earned his dental degree from Paris Medical University. His scholarship and leadership abilities were well recognized and he was named to a Fulbright Scholarship in 1950. Pierre then left his homeland to sail from Le Havre to New York City; from there, he went to Chicago to earn another dental degree from Chicago’s Northwestern University School of Dentistry in 1951. Loyola University of Chicago shared in shaping his abilities when Dr. Marois did postgraduate work there at the Chicago College of Dental Surgery.

Upon returning to France, the young Dr. Marois opened his dental practice in Paris while accepting a teaching position at the Dental School of Paris. There he was quickly promoted through the ranks to a full professorship in Operative Dentistry by 1961, a position he would hold for the next decade.

In March of 1954, Dr. Marois joined the prestigious staff of the American Hospital of Paris. In his story, he was able to move up the list of waiting dental surgeons to join the staff by taking the weekend dental shifts. This was a special time in Pierre’s career. His dental emergency skills were tested on many famous actors (such as Burt Lancaster), actresses (such as Ingrid Bergman and Liz Taylor), author of “From Here to Eternity” James Jones, songwriter Frankie Laine, and diplomats, including the King of Morocco, the royal family, the Moroccan Ambassador—and many others. In fact, the Moroccan King was so impressed with Dr. Marois’ skills that he flew him from Paris to Morocco in his private plane to treat his dental needs. Those same skills impressed many others that they have kept in contact with Pierre over the years.

In exhibiting his skills at that post, he again rose quickly to eventually become Chairman of the Dental Department of the American Hospital in 1980. By July of that same year, he was a member of the hospital’s Medical Board.

With Dr. Marois’ reputation and well-known experience growing each day at his duties, he was appointed to the Board of Examiners for the Dental School of Paris Medical University in 1956. He served in that capacity until 1971.

While at the Paris Medical University, Pierre earned his Master’s Degree for his work on the action of tetracycline antibiotics on bones and teeth. During this time in his life, Dr. Marois presented eight papers at various dental meetings on Operative Dentistry and gave 16 table clinics starting in Paris in 1950 for the Ministry of National Education; he gave his final table clinic to the South African Dental Society on amalgam use in 1972. His papers span the same time frame.

Dr. Marois was totally committed to dentistry in every way. He became an active member of the Federation Dentaire Internationale in 1952. He was invited to become a member of ICD in 1953 and a PFA Fellow in 1954.

He was a member of the American Dental Club of Paris, became their Secretary, and was awarded Honorary Membership. In 1956, he joined the Academy of General Dentistry becoming a Fellow of AGD in 1971. In 1954, Pierre joined the American Dental Society of Europe, serving on their Executive Committee (1977-1980) and as President (1980-81).

Dr. Marois had been an Associate Member of the ADA since 1961 and was esteemed with the awarding of “Honorary Member” in 1980 at the ADA’s 121st Annual Session in the Louisiana Superdome during the Opening Meeting.

By 1965, Dr. Marois was invited into ACD Fellowship and served as ACD’s European Section’s President for three years.
He also has been an active member of the French Dental Academy since 1970. Dr. Marois has been an active member of the Academie Nationale de Chirurgie-Dentaire. He joined the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry in 1976, and the American Academy of Operative Dentistry in 1978.

Dr. Marois was presented with PFA’s highest award, the Elmer S. Best Memorial Award, in 1986. In 2004 the Academy again honored his dedicated service to PFA with the Retiring International Trustee’s Award, a special PFA Service Award at a dedicated dinner for him, and named him “International Trustee-emeritus.” Actually, there were no higher awards to give this outstanding man to honor him. He has already received them all.

n 1994, Northwestern University awarded him their Alumni Merit Award, an honor of the highest esteem to indicate that his alma mater recognized all his contributions to our profession.

The French government has not overlooked Dr. Marois’ international reputation. They have presented him their official high recognition “Palmes Academiques” for his teaching abilities. He is “Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Merite’ and an “Officier de la Legion d’Honneur.” The last award was given to Pierre by President Mitterand of France himself at Elysee Palace.

Pierre is also “Grand Officier du Ouissam Allouite,” a special recognition by the King of Morocco. This is the highest award presented to a foreigner for providing outstanding services to Morocco.

With all that background and service to the international community, no one can dispute the vast impact Pierre Marois has had on his profession and his fellow man. But these experiences merely reflect the tip of the iceberg. The actions and projects that he has initiated, moved, touched on their way are too numerous to list. Several volumes would be needed to describe his life during the War, coming to Chicago and calling on the ADA Executive Director in person, visiting Washington, D.C., nearly being killed during a dinner party at the summer palace of the King of Morocco on 11 July 1965, saving the dentition of famous people at Paris’ American Hospital, hosting the ADA Officers at his own dinner party in 2000, to simply getting the PFA Hall of Fame located at the ADA Headquarters in Chicago, helping fund Le Conseil de l’Ordre des Chirurgien Dentistes of Paris’ mobile dental clinic, and serving on many international dental committees. In fact, this June his Conseil National de l’Ordre des Chirurgiens Dentistes presented him with their highest award, the Conseil’s Gold Medal, during the PFA Hall of Fame and Initiation Ceremony.

But his gentleness and love is never more obvious than for his wife of over three decades, Seba, and his son Jeff. Jeff has distinguished himself during college in Boston as a U.S. Champion on the scull rowing team, and even today enjoys sailing along the shores of the northeastern United States.

Seba is a painter in her own right. We have enjoyed many of her works in her studio above their apartment filled with distinctive art, but the view from their front balcony, the Eiffel Tower, is one of the finest of these. Their apartment is but a block or so from the Champs de Elysees. If the rear apartments were not in the way, the Arc de Triomphe could be seen from their abode as well. In the golden heart of Paris, Pierre and Seba are enjoying their retirement, though it is doubtful that either will ever actually “retire” from moving their worlds forward.

His sage advice at our Board Meetings will be severely missed. He has sat for years listening to the heated debates on various topics, and then quietly proposed the solution to which everyone agrees. His maturity, his “political” experience as a kind arbitrator, his fatherly influence on us all selects the best path for PFA to follow beyond the shambles of argument. He touches everyone that way. And because of that talent, Dr. Pierre Marois moves our world forward.

He continues to serve well as an example and a mentor and a model for generations to come.

and to further the excellent communication levels between the Board of Trustees and the entire membership through the increased usage of e-mails, Internet vehicles, and Dental World, all capably led by our Editor, Dr. James Brophy, and our Web Master, Mr. Mark Stanley. Strong liaison between the Academy and the PFA Foundation, its grants, scholarships, and committed humanitarian aims, will be paramount in addition, so that the service ethic of the Academy continues to be met and grow. These are not mere promises—I will do all that I can to make them realities!

In Philadelphia, we adopted a streamlined version of the Committee Structure that was put in place to make it more efficient and responsive. Each Committee will receive a direct charge from me for their activities during 2005-2006. I will need to render two reports to the Board during this period. This is to insure that they are working for you as charged, as well as giving the Management Team an opportunity to review their functioning and to react to it in a timely fashion as the year unfolds. In addition, it is my intention to reach out to the membership and to seek out individuals who can serve in these capacities, as actual members of the committees or as consultants to them, when appropriate. You come first in the scheme of things, because without you, there is no PFA!

The Strategic Plan, as adopted by the Board of Trustees, will serve as the guiding principle for all of our efforts and is the basis for the goals I have set during my Presidential year. We shall continue to review it, re-prioritize it as deemed necessary, and make a living and functional document. I will welcome all ideas, suggestions, and critiques, no matter from what quarter they came. The Academy Board convenes

President Michael Perpich called the opening meeting to general session on Friday, 7 October 2005, with all the officers and trustees in attendance. Vice President William Winspear gave the Invocation. Secretary General Richard Kozal announced that a quorum was present and asked for approval of the agenda. With that start began three days of PFA Academy, Foundation, and Chair Caucus activities.

The Minutes from the March Executive Board Meeting (Management Team) were reviewed and approved by the Board.

President Perpich reviewed his year in office. Some of the highlights of his report were the compliments of our accountant, Dan Jonker, who stated that the PFA Management Team has made a very successful return to be operating in the black in a very short time span. President Perpich also discussed his visitations during his term. He attended the Foundation Meeting in Chicago, the PFA Gala in Montreal, the outstanding Georgia Section Weekend by Chair Karyn Stockwell, and Section Meetings in Oklahoma, the very successful Southern California Session, and tremendous Ohio gathering honoring Chair Al Uveges. He went on to thank everyone for making his year such a success.

Secretary General’s Report

The Central Office Computer is constantly being updated and refined to increase the database. The Web site, under Drs. Mike Perpich and Howard Mark, along with our Webmaster Mark Stanley is always being modified to facilitate your easier access in obtaining Academy and Foundation information. There have been few significant problems with our publisher, Elsevier Science, with inputting new data and producing our publications.

While the Central Office is still collecting straggling 2005 dues, the 2006 dues statements will be mailed in November. Along with the statement notice, the Academy is asking for a voluntary $20 donation for the Foundation. 2004 voluntary donations were at $35,785. A donation may be made with the same check as the dues payment and will be separated by the Central Office. As of October, all 2004 delinquent members will be dropped from the rolls after duly being notified. All Fellows paying the full dues are in the database for full services. Those not paying full dues, by the Board’s discretion, do not receive Dental World/Dental Abstracts. The Initiation Fee is still $150.00 U.S.

Twenty “Outstanding Dentist of the Year” plaques have been prepared for the requesting Sections, and eight retiring Section Chair plaques have been sent out.

While the Central Office sends out an introduction letter to all new Fellows, the Academy strongly recommends a local or Section Induction Ceremony to formally present the Fellowship ribbons, keys, and certificates.

Outstanding Dental Student certificates were mailed out for 71 requesting institutions including five to India and one to Ireland. More non-U.S. Sections can effectively make use of this certificate to introduce our Academy to the dental student body as they are graduating.

The letters requesting names for these certificates are mailed out with the Foundation’s request for a selected dental scholarship student. This has, at times, caused some confusion between the two awards. But the Board decided to continue the Academy award and still mail the two letters in the same envelope to save on costs.

There are currently 1374 Life Members who pay no dues. However, they all will be sent a request for a Foundation donation and asked if they wish to subscribe to Dental World/Dental Abstracts. Often, the Life Members fail to realize that once their status changes, they must forward a subscription fee, which is at cost, to continue to stay in touch with the Academy’s activities. The small fee merely covers the publication’s cost and mailing. Life Members may also choose to send in the full Fellowship dues and remain on the complete mailing list as they had been.

The Management Team (formerly the Executive Board) continues to hold quarterly conference phone calls to review the current financial condition and expenses of the Academy.

The annual Corporate Report has been filed in the State of Illinois. In Nevada, the Academy files a report as a foreign corporation.

The annual financial review by the independent accounting firm was completed last March. This document was forwarded to the Budget and Finance Committee Chairman and the PFA President. The report was very favorable as all the Academy’s accounts are in order.

The Fauchard Dental History Museum continues to grow with donated antique dental items. The Foundation has financially supported any costs involved. Before anyone starts sending the museum their old dental units, please contact Dr. Kozal to discuss this with him. The local media has printed many enthusiastic articles about our museum, and several schools, organizations, and visiting individuals have toured our exhibits. Last May, a local Las Vegas TV station featured the museum on their telecast.

The Central Office continues to send out monthly reports to all the officers on their 30-day activities.

All current invoices have been paid to 1 September 2005 except for the Philadelphia Meeting and the remaining Elsevier printing expenses.

Membership has been going up, and all the Board appreciates that. To date (as of 5 October), 455 new Fellows have been added to our rolls during the past year.

All the year’s financial statements and account reports have been included in the meeting packets distributed to the Board and Officers. Included in that packet are all the membership flow sheets and Fellowship geographic distribution statistics.

Budget & Finance
Committee Report

The Academy’s fiscal year runs from 1 January to 31 December. Prior to that time, the Committee, usually chaired by the Academy’s President-elect, is responsible for drawing up the next year’s budget based a great deal on the prior year’s financial report. In that year, the committee quarterly reviews the budget against the expenses to make sure the Academy is living within its means. Since none of those involved are particularly experts, our own hired accounting firm monitors all the numbers as well, and translates them into the proper forms and reports required by the various governing units and Board members. This is Dan Jonker & Associates. They handle our internal number crunching almost on a daily basis.

But our Constitution also requires that an outside accounting firm, independent of our internal accountant, review all our books and assets to insure to all our Fellows that our not-for-profit corporation is being run according to law. This firm is John D. Kopczyk, Ltd., of downtown Chicago, composed of all CPAs. This is then required to be published to the public in the newspaper where the Academy’s Central Office is located and placed on file with the District Court of Clark County, Nevada.

From this running process, the Committee can then draft a reasonable budget based on the prior year’s financial report, and the current finances monitored quarterly by the officers of the Academy. Thus, the FY 2006 Budget was submitted to the Board, discussed, and adopted.

Foundation Report

This is a condensation from the written report by the outgoing President, Carl Lundgren, discussing the status of its activities and expenditures for the past year. The PFA Foundation’s voting Board of Trustees for this Private Foundation is made up entirely of the past Presidents of the Academy who serve without pay and determine where the grant money should go. In our case, that is to dental scholarships and dental grants. The mechanics of doing all this is performed by their elected Executive Director, who is paid as the only part-time employee of the Foundation.

IRS requires that such Private Foundations must spend at least 5% of the total Fair Market Value of their assets. In the case of our Foundation, with assets of $7 million, the Board must spend about $350,000 and pay IRS 1% of those earnings. That means that the Foundation’s Treasurer and Budget & Finance Committee must invest the assets to generate over the 5% return required to comply with the law. The penalty for not doing this is actually two-fold: one, is to pay higher taxes on the money that is not spent to meet the requirement, and two, having to dip into the principal assets to do so, thus reducing the amount that can be invested.

A reputable outside investing firm, Bank of America Investments, Inc., is employed to best place our funds where we are able to generate such revenue.

In the past years, our holdings have been earning about 7%, mostly in bonds. So there was not much worry about compliance with the government requirements. However, with the current lower interest rates this year that we have had to accept after the bonds are turned over or called in, compliance has now become an issue. Bank of America Investments has vested us in a Manager’s Blend of diversified equities, but as more of our bond investments are converted at their deadlines, we could be in trouble of being able to offer grants at the present rate, paying more in taxes, and losing some principal in a dropping market.

Committee Report

Chair William Winspear reported that under the authorship of a very astute Howard Mark, our documents have been streamlined and adjusted to deal with the new century we are entering. His Committee’s proposals were discussed, debated, changed or accepted, and adopted at this meeting. This is a standing committee, so a yearly review of how this all operates is monitored and reported back to the Board.

The Strategic Plan developed by Howard Mark’s Committee had been discussed for some time, and parts had been implemented already. A motion to adopt the plan in full and implement it was passed by the Board.

Membership Committee

Our Fellowship stands at 7000 members, but that figure fluctuates regularly with new Inductees, deaths, retirements, and the world economic situation. Our incoming President Howard Mark has emphasized inducting new Fellows that qualify, retaining members through more Section activities, and expanding our Sections into new countries, like China.

Since ours is a grass-roots organization, this all must come from the each individual Fellow to recommend a colleague they know that deserves the recognition of becoming a Fellow in PFA. Our membership goal for this year is 500 new Fellows. However, if everyone brings in just one new member, we will easily attain that goal and be able to initiate more projects.

Dr. Ernesto Acuna of Mexico had already been appointed to serve out the remainder of the late Bernardo Levit of Argentina’s term by the Management Team at last March’s Meeting.

Publications Report

Editor James Brophy was asked to give this report on the status of our communications, many of which are being added on to our Web site by Webmaster Mark Stanley for downloading by any Fellow for their immediate use. Dental World has also been added to our Web site for ready reference, but it will continue to arrive at your doorstep every other month. But there are additional publications, in the form of pamphlets that will need to be printed and distributed, such as the PFA Introductory brochure. The Board has also asked that the Mentorship pamphlet, previously done by Editor Brophy, and then Rhode Island’s Christine Benoit, be updated and re-issued.

While our publisher has indicated that they are unable to print many e-photos because of the low level of pixels they contain, the Committee is investigating with Elsevier how this technology can be achieved to satisfy their needs.

PFA’s Web Site

Mark Stanley, our Webmaster, has proven his ability by maintaining and initiating many new ideas for our Web site. Stimulated by President Michael Perpich and President-elect Howard Mark, Officers’ pages have been added, which can be updated from a laptop while the PFA meeting is still in progress. Also contained on these pages are the Officers’ names, addresses, and e-mails.

We are still looking earnestly into the multi-language translation technology to be able to have our Web site in several languages. The PFA Web site has also attempted with success to offer individual Region Web site pages for local activity additions that can be made more timely and accessible.

The PFA Directory of Fellows alone has saved us tremendous amounts of money in being on the Web site for several years. Not only is it up-to-date but also is accessible 24/7. The time involved in compiling the directory and the cost in mailing it out every three years has made this addition cost-effective almost from the moment it was initiated.

Computer traffic has grown more than 30% over the last year. The number of visits to our Web site averaged 25,000 in the first quarter of this year, and it has steadily risen since its inception.

Links to other organizations, our Museum, and dental history have increased and made it easier to slide between our site and another one of interest.

The up-to-the-minute calendar on the site is only as good as the Fellows who add the dates of their activities, though the International Academy and Foundation dates are added as soon as they are confirmed. Regions and Sections need to get their dates placed on the site to increase interest and attendance.

In addition to the Independent Computer Analysis that Mark Stanley supplies us, our Secretary General is doing a user survey to acquire more personal data to consider in modernizing the site.

Committee Report

Chairman James Englander notes that to be a Fellow in PFA, a dentist needs to be “the cream of the crop” in our profession. But there are those who excel beyond just that. It is his committee’s duty to select “the best of the best.” These names are submitted to the Board for approval for each award designated by the committee. The following are those truly excellent individuals that have been selected by the Academy for this special recognition:

Committee Report

Per the instructions of Chair Ray Klein, Dr. Morinosuke Chiwaki of Japan into the Hall of Fame at the 20th General Meeting of the Japanese Association for Dental Sciences last year by past PFA President Min Horiuchi, and Japan Trustee Mamoru Sakuda.

Formerly approved names of Dr. Terrence Ward of the United Kingdom and Maynard K. Hine of the United States have been awaiting a proper venue to make the presentation. At last year’s annual PFA

Board Meeting in Orlando, the names of Dr. Rafiuddin Ahmed of India and Dr. Edward H. Angle of the United States were approved.

Two other worthy nominations have been received for Dr. Raymond Percy Begg of Australia and Dr. Thomas W. Evans of the United States. They are awaiting Committee approval before submission to the PFA Board.

Dr. Klein, a past PFA President, has had further family restrictions on his time and needs to serve those as well. Hence, he declined to serve another term as Chair of this Committee. His brilliant and energetic leadership will be missed.

The Board then approved the appointment of past President Kevin Roach as the new Hall of Fame Chairman.

Mentorship Program

Trustee Bob Hart, Committee Chair, discussed the successful programs and what made them succeed. The concept of mentorship has blossomed all over and is being handled by the schools themselves, the local dental societies, or other groups as well. Some programs have taken different paths. Most mentor the dental students; some approach the newly graduated dentist to introduce him to the dental community and act as a colleague to discuss local problems. It was noted that we need to issue another Mentorship pamphlet to our Section Chairs to inform them, and to use to educate their dental school authorities. An independent group has issued their own Mentorship Manual in Mississippi—one for the Mentor, and one for those being mentored. The Board discussed the possibility of purchasing such manuals for Sections that were sincere in initiating a program in their area. The cost was referred to the Budget & Finance Committee to see if that was possible and on what scale. Overseas interest was very high, and one manual each to the Section Chair might be sufficient to encourage them to start a program.

Unfinished Board Business

Topics ranged from establishing a protocol for admitting new Sections, particularly in the more economically strapped parts of the world. What criteria must they meet? How many Fellows must they have? What would be their dues? Some sections have only one member—the Chair. There are many areas of the world open to Fellowship expansion, but are our current fees too much for them to sustain?

The Fellowship Committee needs to address these issues.

Also discussed were some international problems dealing with the few unpaid foreign Sections.

Discussion and procedure was debated over the dispensation of the funds held for U.S. Sections from the dues increase. Three Sections have already applied. Basically, the program would entail funding Section activities or projects not being covered by any Foundation grants, but exclusively to offer to their Fellowship. Georgia Chair Karyn Stockwell’s Weekend Section meeting, social event, and project involvement was discussed as an excellent example of what the Board intended by adding the increase.

New Business

Dr. Winspear discussed his six-page international questionnaire and the ongoing results to date.

The new podium banner was introduced and displayed.

The matter of the Katrina Disaster was discussed. As the situation was quite recent, little information was available about what was being done and what could be done—except from the ADA. No one could come up with even an idea of how many Fellows in our profession were affected and to what degree. A disaster protocol was decided to be necessary as to who would be covered, what areas would be included, would it be for our Fellows, dentists in general, dental projects only, or philanthropic in general. It was decided by the Board to waive this coming year’s dues from all Fellows in the affected areas.

For such future incidents, that would apply to all areas of the world. Dr. Mark proposed setting up some guidelines from which to operate a program. It was also adopted by the Board to send a letter to our membership asking for Fellowship contributions for a Relief Fund to be handled through our Foundation.

Section Chair Caucus

As the Academy Board Meeting was convening, the Section Chairs met in the next room. President Michael Perpich, after dispensing with the opening business, asked for a brief adjournment so that all the officers and trustees could attend their meeting and answer their questions directly. He felt their input was of such importance that we all should listen to what they had to say.

Dan Castagna of the Northern California Section chaired the Caucus and would later report their comments officially to the Board at a later meeting. A joint working luncheon was planned with the some 17 Section Chairs after their Caucus.

Canada’s Aldo Boccia invited the Management Team to hold the 2007 Interim Meeting in Toronto.

Otherwise, much of the discussion was about the Web site and establishing Section pages for those Sections wanting them. The Board stated that they were planning Region pages to start. Another topic was how to tap into the $10 dues per Fellow increase (for the United States Sections). The Board plans have not been finalized, but the money collected for each Section was to be used as seed funding for an event or activity sponsored by that Section up to the amount collected from their members. This was over and beyond what individual dues each Section might assess for their own projects.

Another new idea presented was regarding any guidelines for the selection of a Section Chair or movement up to Trustee.

President-elect Howard Mark fielded many of the questions stressing membership, local activities, and Foundation grants. Trustee Barry Dolman of Canada stated that membership is connectivity.

Later, at the Board Meeting, many of these topics were brought up and discussed in detail and at length.

Foundation Report II

The newly elected Foundation President, M. David Campbell, attended the final Sunday Board Session to announce the newly elected officers for the Foundation during their meetings that weekend.. He had been selected as President; C. F. Larry Barrett had been chosen for Vice President, and William Kort was re-elected as Treasurer. Dr. Campbell sat in on the Katrina Disaster discussion and noted that the Foundation was wrestling with the same problem. Everyone wants to help, but no one knows what would be most effective, or who to help, or where to start, and what disasters to cover. Certainly, Katrina was one of the worst, but Hurricanes Rita, Tammy, and Wilma have done additional damage, while the reported earthquakes that weekend in Guatemala and Pakistan have killed thousands.

President Michael Perpich called the assembly to order for the Awards Luncheon and asked for a moment of silence for our dear departed Trustee Bernardo Levit. Trustee Barry Dolman gave the Invocation. The President then introduced the dignitaries attending the sold out PFA event. Lunch was served.

Awards Chairman James Englander announced the recipients of each award as the time came. Secretary General Richard Kozal prepared the videotape sent by Dr. Kleinman for viewing by the luncheon guests.

PFA Gold Medal

This year’s PFA Gold Medal recipient was selected and approved by the Board to be presented to Dr. Dushanka V. Kleinman, Deputy Director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.

The Awards Banquet was the venue, but Dr. Kleinman could not attend.

Dr. Kleinman addressed the attendees by way of videotape for the luncheon guests to view. In her statements, she thanked the Pierre Fauchard Academy for this tremendous honor. “Dentistry is the only professional group with a conscience.” She went on, “There is controversy and contentment.” Our profession is facing many challenges all the time. We can’t wait for them to fall on us. I have found that the best way to predict the future is to invent it ourselves.”

Her statements echoed what the late past ADA President Richard Muscola said last year at the Awards banquet. We must unite, all of us, and attack the problems facing dentistry. As we face many here in our own country, there are far more in the third-world countries.

Dr. Dushanka V. Kleinman

Dr. Kleinman is the newly named Assistant Director for Roadmap Coordination in the Office of the Director of NIH, the Deputy Director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) at the National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, and the Chief Dental Officer of the United States Public Health Service. She graduated with her B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1969 and earned her D.D.S. degree from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry in 1973. Upon completing her dental degree, Dr. Kleinman did a Rotating Internship at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics in 1974. She then went on to receive her Master’s Degree in the Science of Dentistry in Dental Public Health from the Boston University Henry Goldman School of Dental Medicine in 1976.

Dr. Kleinman has served as an Assistant Professor for two years at the University of Maryland at the Baltimore School of Dentistry before receiving her commission in the United States Public Health Service in June of 1978. Service Medal. Most recently, Dr. Kleinman has received the APHA’s John Knutson Distinguished Service Award in Dental Public Health and also the Carl Schlack Award from the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States (AMSUS).

PFA Distinguished Service Award

This year’s PFA Distinguished Service Award was presented to Dr. Jeremiah J. Lowney, Jr. of Norwich, Connecticut.

Dr. Lowney accepted the Distinguished Service Award from President Michael Perpich and addressed the luncheon guests about his foundation, the Haitian Health Organization that

spends a quarter of a million dollars to serve the dental needs of the very poor people of Haiti. No island paradise here, just want and need. But he noted, “Individuals can make a difference. The resources of the world are not evenly distributed. When we use our gifts and talents, we leave our footprint behind. Our return is the spiritual and personal reward from what we do.”

Dr. Jeremiah Lowney, Jr.

Dr. Lowney is a graduate of Tufts University for his B.S. degree and Temple University School of Dental Medicine for his professional degree. He also holds an M.S. degree in growth and development, a Certificate of Proficiency in Orthodontics from SUNY in Buffalo, and another Masters degree in Public Health from the University of Connecticut (1966). He was honored by being awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters degree (honorary) from the University of Bridgeport (1989) and another from Quinnipiac University (1995).

Dr. Lowney served as Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy. As a Rotarian, he earned the 1984 Paul Harris Fellow for Rotary District #7980. He is also a former member and chairman of the City of Norwich Personnel and Pension Board, and served a six-year term on the Board of Finance for the town of Lebanon. He currently sits on the Board of St. Joseph Living Center, the Eastern Connecticut A.H.E.C., and the Ray & Pauline Sullivan Foundation. He has served past Directorships for the Norwich Saving Society, Norwich Quinnebaug Unit of the American Cancer Society with two terms as their President, the Norwich YMCA,

Dental Trade & Industry Award

The annual Dental Trade & Industry Award of Recognition was approved for the G. C. Corporation, whose President and CEO is Makoto Nakao of Tokyo. The company was nominated for this high honor by International Trustee Mamoru Sakuda of Japan. Awards Chairman James Englander announced the honor, which was presented by President Michael Perpich.

G. C. Corporation President Makoto Nakao thanked the Academy for this stellar honor. His company is celebrating its 86th Anniversary this year and is honored to be the only dental company in the top 20 PQM listings. They are a top quality, high customer satisfaction based company doing business worldwide. But they are not content with that status quo. They are striving to make new footsteps with future dental innovations.

G. C. Corporation CEO Makoto Nakao receiving Award Certificate from President Michael Perpich

Mr. Nakao is a diligent gentleman who has made many various contributions to the development of modern dentistry worldwide. His company received the 2004 Japan Quality Medal for the recognized excellence of his products. This is not an easy award to earn. His company must demonstrate total quality management-focused activity for at least three years after winning the Deming Prize. Since 1970, only 18 companies in Japan have achieved this award.

Born in 1948, Makoto Nakao finished his doctorate in the Department of Studies of Science and Technology at the Graduate School of Waseda University in 1976. In 1974, he had joined G. C. Dental Industrial Corporation rising to become President and CEO of the now G. C. Corporation in 1983.

PFA International
Honorary Fellowship

The Awards Committee and the PFA board have approved this International Fellowship to be presented to Dr. Malvin E. Ring. He was nominated by past PFA President and current Foundation Executive Director Fred Halik for this honor. President Michael Perpich presented Dr. Ring with a Certificate of Fellowship and the ribbon PFA Key of Honor.

Dr. Ring also thanked the Academy for this honor. He went on to marvel that we are assembling a dental museum as well, like the $6 million Museum of Dentistry in Baltimore that is now affiliated with the Smithsonian. “Young people have very little knowledge on the background of dentistry’s founding in Europe. Even the Encyclopaedia Britannica is not up-to-date on their description of dentistry.”

President Perpich inducts Dr. Ring into Fellowship

Dr. Ring graduated with a B.A. from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York in 1939. He then served in WWII before receiving his dental degree from St. Louis University School of Dentistry in 1946. He then served in the Korean Conflict and started a dental practice in Batavia, New York, before he went on to obtain a Masters of Library Science in 1970.

Retiring Trustee Awards

At this point in the program, President Michael Perpich presented the retiring Trustees with the PFA Trustee Service plaques. Actually, only Trustee James Englander was physically present to receive his honor. Trustee Bernardo Levit was certainly there in spirit. And the award for retired Trustee Pierre Marois had been sent to him in Paris.

The retiring Section Chair plaques, not already sent and awarded at the Section’s local function, were presented by President Perpich. Retiring Chair Dr. Tsuneaki Kuwahata of Japan was present to receive this honor directly from the PFA President at the foremost International PFA function of the year.

Foundation President Carl Lundgren announced that an anonymous donor had funded the presentation of PFA Foundation Service plaques to be awarded to the all-volunteer Officers and Board for their unselfish dedication to PFA, the Foundation, and to our profession.

Following this first-ever event, past PFA President M. David Campbell inducted the new officers for the 2005-2006 year:

Another highlight of an already momentous occasion was the swearing in of President Howard Mark by PFA Fellow Dr. Robin Santiago, Dr. Mark’s daughter.

“I humbly accept this great honor. Our Academy deserves to grow, and it will. We serve, and we honor those who do serve,” President Mark stated in his acceptance remarks.

He then presented outgoing President Michael Perpich with the French Gold Medal given him in Paris for Dr. Perpich by Le Conseil National de l’Ordre des Chirurgiens Dentistes President Pierre-Yves Mahe last June. Dr. Mark also presented him with the outgoing President’s plaque for having crossed the finish line as an Officer held in high regard by his colleagues.

Dr. Perpich then adorned President Mark with the Medal of his PFA office. He thanked all those who had helped him move the Academy forward during his year.

Secretary General Richard Kozal approached the podium and gave his usual benediction: “These proceedings are now closed.”

President’s Reception

Saturday evening, after the Awards Banquet Luncheon, all Fellows, dignitaries, and guests are invited to a cocktail reception hosted by the outgoing PFA President. While the event may seem redundant, a great deal of contact business goes on as well as social renewals with family. Dignitaries, unable to make the regular PFA functions due to other organizational commitments, drop in to visit and renew PFA contacts, exchange bits of new information from the day, and make future dates.

International Trustees Barry Dolman and the Canadians orchestrated one of the finest International PFA Events in recent history during the FDI’s 93rd annual World Dental Congress and the Canadian Dental Association’s annual Session with the participation of the Order of Dentists of Quebec.

Dr. Barry Dolman, past PFA President Kevin Roach, and the PFA Sections of Canada hosted an outstanding example of what sincere, dedicated organization can do for the Pierre Fauchard Academy members and for our image internationally.

The evening’s festivities were attended by over 100 PFA members, officers, and international guests. The PFA International Officers attending were President Michael Perpich, President-elect Howard Mark and his wife Sheila, past PFA President Kevin Roach and his wife Ann, Editor Brophy and his wife Shirley, Trustees Barry Dolman and his wife Colette, James Englander and his wife Carole, Bob Hart and his wife Eileen, Charles Eller and his wife Gloria, and Dr. and Mrs. Ernesto Acuna from Mexico.

Dr. George A. Zarb

Dr. George Albert Zarb, Professor-emeritus of the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry, was the recipient of the 2005 Elmer S. Best Memorial Award at the PFA Dinner held during the FDI Congress Session in Montreal, Canada, this August.

Dr. Zarb is the Director of the Graduate Prosthodontic Program and Implant Prosthodontic Unit for the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto. Prior to his retirement in June of 2004, Dr. Zarb was the full-time Chairman of Prosthodontics.

He has lectured nationally and internationally, written several papers on different aspects of Prosthodontics, and co-authored some 13 textbooks, as well as contributing chapters to several others. He has organized and edited the published Proceedings from five international conferences and was co-editor of Oral Science Reviews. His current research is in the field of Implant Prosthodontics. He also has maintained a part-time private practice in Toronto since 1966.

The Canadian 2004 Distinguished Service Award was presented to Dr. Marcia Boyd with an introduction by Canadian Section Chair for British Columbia Dr. Evelyn McNee.

The Canadian 2005 Distinguished Service Award was presented to Dr. Robert Salois with an introduction by Canadian Section Chair for Quebec by Dr. Sam Sgro. Dr. Salois is President of l’Ordre des Dentistes du Quebec.

Following the Awards Presentations, past PFA President Kevin Roach presented the Foundation Student Scholarship Awards to the student dental school Governors of the ten Canadian dental schools. Receiving those Awards were British Columbia’s Jenny Hui, Alberta’s Jeremy Wong, Saskatchewan’s Mark Venditti, Manitoba’s Raymond Zhu, Toronto’s Amanda Braude, Montreal’s Yi-Wei Liu, McGill’s Eugenie Diagnault and Antonio Crivello, Laval’s Fouad Yadani, and Dalhousie’s Kelly Drover.

A moment of silence was held in honor of the passing of two remarkable Fellows—past ADA President Richard Mascola of New York and Trustee Bernardo Levit or Argentina

International President Michael Perpich subsequently amazed the attending guests with the special presentation of his 2005 Presidential Award of Excellence to past PFA President Kevin Roach for his outstanding service in reorganizing the international Academy and preparing it to enter the 21st century fiscally in the black and technologically in the future. Dr. Roach stated, “I want to take this opportunity to thank you most sincerely for surprising me with your Presidential Award of Excellence. To be honoured by yourself and the other Management Team members is very humbling. But to present this prestigious award in my home country in front of my colleagues, friends, and family is most gratifying. Each and every one of my “dream management team” really deserves to receive this award. I shall be the first to sing your accolades. I see many more exceptional management teams on the horizon for our august honour organization. I shall continue to wear my PFA insignia with pride. And I will strive to continue to live up to your vote of confidence.”

President Carl Lundgren called the Foundation Board of Trustees to order. Dr. James Long gave the Invocation. The agenda was approved. The Minutes from their April 2005 Interim Meeting in Chicago were discussed and approved

President Lundgren then gave his report, which was the same as included above in the Academy Board Meetings section.

Vice President Campbell’s report praised the increased communications between the Board members and the holding of the Interim Meeting, which gave the Board time enough away from the festivities to thoroughly discuss each and every important item that faced the Foundation. Dr. Campbell also praised Dr. Barrett’s efforts to establish a fund-raising opportunity for the Foundation, a goal for many years of the late Foundation President Robert Shira.

Treasurer Bill Kort, also Chair of the Finance Committee, discussed the financial investments needing to be made as the higher yielding bonds were being called in or coming due. Transferring the resultant funds, sometimes within days, to other investments was a serious decision since all other opportunities were at a lower rate of return.

Executive Director Fred Halik gave his report on the Scholarship Program, the Grants applicatons, the Foundation’s Web site page renovations, and necessary revisions and recommended date changes.

Academy President Michael Perpich addressed the Board concerning the work of the Academy. He had been spending much of his year improving communications within the Academy and particularly the Web site. His efforts have vastly improved a nearly instantaneous contact with every Fellow with a computer. He has made the Officers accessible online.

Academy President-elect Howard Mark, Chair of their Constitution & By-Laws Committee, presented amendments and changes for the Board’s consideration.

Trustee Larry Barrett gave his report on the success the Public Relations Committee has had in the past year. He then presented the results of his Fund Raising Committee, whose members Academy President Perpich and Editor Brophy were present.

After the installation of the Academy’s new Officers for 2005-2006, Immediate past President Michael Perpich was voted on the Foundation Board of Trustees. The Board also welcomed back the new Academy President Howard Mark and the new Academy President-elect William Winspear.

Grants Committee Chair Gary Lowder presented the Committee’s report on the grant applications. The Board as a whole went over each one, discussed them, and arrived at funding commensurate with the funds available. Then they went back over the grants and re-evaluated each one. Your Editor was very impressed with the thoroughness and seriousness that the Board gave to each grant application.

Finally, at the Sunday Board Meeting the election of new officers was held. Elected to serve three-year terms were:

• M. David Campbell for President
• C. F. Larry Barrett for Vice President
• William Kort for Treasurer

Under “new business,” the Board took on the topic of dealing with the Katrina Disaster. Like the Academy, debate and discussion explored all the many ways this could be accomplished, legally within the Foundation, and philanthropically. After much discussion, the Board voted to establish a PFA Disaster /Emergency Relief Fund with seed money coming from the Foundation’s operational fund. The total results of their combined information and ideas were referred to their Executive Committee for setting guidelines to operate the program. These guidelines will be reported to their Board for approval at their Interim Meeting in April next year.

Canadian Academy Trustee Barry Dolman presented a check for $1000 from the Fellows of Canada to the Foundation. Following that presentation, Editor Brophy presented his annual check to the Foundation Scholarship Program.

PFA Relief Fund

Inauguration Announced!

The Pierre Fauchard Academy Foundation Board unanimously approved the establishment of a PFAF Disaster and Emergency Relief Fund at its meeting in Philadelphia on 9 October 2005. Recognizing its international Fellowship, and appreciating the fact that natural disasters and similar emergency situations can devastate the ability of Fellows to continue to practice under these circumstances anywhere in the world, the Board felt an obligation to use its resources to assist in practical ways. While this use of Foundation funds may seem out of keeping with its mission, this will not interfere with the continuance of the grants and scholarship program.

The Foundation Board’s recently installed President, Dr. M. David Campbell of Michigan, is proud of this action and states,

Over the years since the Foundation’s inception, we have had some tremendously able leadership under Drs. Robert Shira and Carl Lundgren as Presidents, George Hique as Treasurer, and Shig Kishi and Fred Halik as our Executive Directors. They established such a firm basis for our Foundation that the Board of Trustees has been able to operate effectively right from the beginning. Their dedication to serving is unquestioned. Your Foundation would not be where it is today without their brilliant and unselfish devotion to our mission.

Being the new President is not going to be an easy task for the next three years. Times are always changing. What was a firm foundation in the past now faces new problems in the coming years. But the Board and Officers realize that and have begun preparations to confront them.

Our new Vice President Larry Barrett has not only opened doors for us in our public relations, he has crafted several plans for the necessary fund-raising program we have thought about for some time. Larry has brought it forward and is ready to launch it. This is probably the greatest task we have before us.

Howard Mark, now the Academy President, has modernized our Constitution & By-Laws to bring them more in line with what the Board wants in facing the new century. He and our new Trustee Michael Perpich, the Academy’s Immediate Past President, have opened up a vast avenue of communications between the Academy and the Foundation. Our relations with the Academy are better now than ever before.

Gary Lowder has done an unbelievable job in handling all the Grant application reviews, completing them on time, and guiding them through approval. He is to be highly commended for his devotion.

We have an excellent Board of Trustees that give so much of their time so freely to our Foundation that meeting with them is a warming experience. Debate is friendly; discussion is honest and open; and we have become a family.

However, as we plan our fund-raising effort, the multiple disasters of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Tammy, and Wilma, along with the devastating earthquakes in Pakistan and Guatemala, have hurt our hearts in knowing about the massive loss of life and billions of dollars in property. As fellow humans serving humanity in so many ways, we are touched by these losses. The Foundation, like the Academy, is eager to help out. But we debate what is the most effective way we can—as individuals and as an organization. This matter deserves serious reflection. Though we desire to charge right in with help, we are advised to wait and see how we can do this in the best and most effective manner. After an afternoon of debate on the matter, the Board, with as many varied ideas as there are Trustees, has referred the situation to the Executive Committee to generate a final plan of action that befits our mission as a Foundation serving our fellow man.

Through this column I hope to continue to make you aware of our progress.

Japan

Trustee Mamoru Sakuda and Japan Chair Tsuneaki Kuwahata presented the Foundation Scholarship award to student Harumi Kawaki during the Presentation Ceremony at Okayama University Dental School last September. Dean Dr. Tatsuo Watanabe was also in attendance with Dr. Manabu Iidaka, the Deputy Secretary General of the Japan Section; Dr. Masaharu Takigawa, the dental school’s Chairman of Student Affairs; and Dr Teruko Takano-Yamamoto, a PFA fellow at Okayama dental School.

Two days later, Trustee Mamoru Sakuda and the Japan Section honored student Atsuko Kida with the Scholarship Award by Japan’s Chairman-elect Dr.Toshio Morioka at the Osaka Dental University. Also in attendance were Dean Hisao Imai, International Trustee Sakuda, Chair of the Kansai Component Dr. Yoshiki Sakamoto, Trustee of the Japan Section Koichi Hashimoto, Vice Dean Takayoshi Kawazoe, PFA Fellow at Osaka Dental University Kiyoshi Ohura, Chair of Student Affairs Dr. Michiharu Diato, and Chair of the Board of Education Dr. Tatsuo Kawamoto.

United States

Kentucky

Chair Karl Lange reported that the Foundation Scholarship Awards were presented to John Kindoll Newcomb at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and to Jolanta Nowicka Nichols at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry.

Michigan

Past Section Chair Virginia Merchant reported that DS4 student Rebecca Himm received the Foundation Scholarship Award from the University of Detroit–Mercy School of Dentistry Dean H. Robert Steiman. Also receiving scholarships were dental students Will Thompson from the University of Detroit–Mercy School of Dentistry and Louis Whitesman from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.

Mississippi

Chair William Buchanan, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry, along with past PFA President James Long presented the Foundation’s Scholarship Award to D4 student Patrick Singley. Patrick has been recognized on the Dean’s List of Honorees and is a member of the Hembree Honor Society.

Missouri

Chairman James Kulild presented the Foundation Scholarship Award to junior dental student Christopher J. Dumas of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry. The Award presentation was made at the Westin Crown Hotel during the school’s Recognition & Award Program last September. Chris Dumas thanked the Academy and Foundation for its generosity in awarding him this honor.

Pennsylvania

Colonel William P. Yeomans, a PFA Fellow, at the age of 59 has been called back to duty overseas to serve in Kosovo. Bill is a practicing general dentist in Scranton, a past Trustee and Vice President of the Pennsylvania Dental Association and a past President of the Scranton District Dental Society.

Australasia

The new Section Officers are Section Chair Mark Sinclair of New South Wales, Secretary/Treasurer Patrick Meaney of New South Wales, and Trustees Richard Sawers of South Australia, Gerry Clausen of Victoria, and Dexter Bamberry of New Zealand.

Belgium/Luxembourg

Chair Jose Dahan organized an extensive number of Section affairs for the visiting President-elect last June, including an all-day seminar on Sleep Apnea at the University of Liege.

Fellow Christiaan Colpaert presented a seminar on “Microdentistry,” explaining how to avoid unnecessary destruction of dental structures.

Two prominent dentists were inducted last year—Dr. Alain Arys, a clinician and dental teacher in Brussels, and Dr. Odile Hutereau, Chairwoman of the Luxembourg Society of Orthodontics.

Canada

International Trustee for Canada Barry Dolman reported that Fellow Dr. Bernie White of Saskatoon has been appointed the Registrar/CEO for the College of Dental Surgeons of Saskatchewan.

Dr. Burton Conrod of Sydney, Nova Scotia, was named FDI President-elect during their annual World Congress in Montreal. Dr. Conrod’s two-year term as FDI President will commence in 2007 following that of Dr. Michele Aerden of Belgium.

Fellow Jack Cottrell begins his year as President of the Canadian Dental Association by meeting with Fellow Richard Haught, ADA President, and with ADA President-elect Robert Brandjord.

Fellow John P. O’Keefe is the CDA Editor and has just recently redesigned the publication.

Fellow Gary MacDonald and the Atlantic Section will be hosting the 2006 CDA annual Meeting.

The PFA Annual Awards and Installation Ceremonies will be held on 24–26 August 2006 in St. John’s, N

Germany

Chairman Frank Braun visited the PFA Central Headquarters in Las Vegas last July and toured the PFA Dental History Museum there.

Haiti

Dr. Jeremy Lowney, Jr. of Connecticut, who received our PFA Distinguished Service Award at the Philadelphia Awards Banquet, initiated this project and established the Haitian Health Foundation. Their Foundation spends 93% of their donations in serving the poor and needy of Haiti. Dr. Jeremy, his wife Virginia, and Marilyn Lowney work tirelessly to construct sanctuary homes for the sick and needy, distribute food to the malnourished children, build a school, offer medical services, and provide dental treatment, and offer eye care services. They are making a difference in the world, one person at a time.

Japan

Japan held their 36th annual Section Meeting in Hiroshima last October.

At the PFA Philadelphia Board Meeting and events, retiring Chair Tsuneaki Kuwahata made many friends with his attendance at our functions. He received the retiring Section Chair’s Service Award at the Awards Banquet and attended the Section Chair’s Caucus.

Japan Chair Tsuneaki Kuwahata of Tokyo is a big Sumo Wrestling fan. This sport is very big in his country. He has become a favorite of two great champions. My Japanese is very rusty (two words, and Dr. Kuwahata taught me one of them), so I cannot translate the names of these champions very well. But their wrestling program lists them in order of greatness starting with very small (unreadable type) to very large, bold figures. These two men are named in the largest of the Japanese type.

Mexico

Chair Ernesto Acuna hosted their Section Meeting last November 3rd at the Centro Asturiano. They inducted ten new Fellows into the Academy. Dr. Armando Hernandez, founder and former Dean of the dental school of the Univesidad de Lasalle Bajio introduced the Foundation Scholarship recipient Patricia Murillo Flores. Three dental schools in Mexico City were introduced to the Mentorship Program for the Intercontinental University, Technological University of Mexico, and the Latin-American University. A presentation by architect Carlos Flores Marini discussed “Gaudi and his repercussions in Mexico.” Gaudi was an architect from Barcelona, Spain (1828-1926).

Netherlands

Dr. J. A. van Bentum, Section Secretary for Chair Annette Dony, announced that he is retiring after five years as Secretary. He will be replaced by Dr. Buisman. Treasurer for four years, Dr. Balkema will be replaced by Dr. Donker.

This year’s lustrum was to Barcelona, Spain. Dr. H. Goeneveld, a member of the European Dental Committee, gave a talk on “harmonization in Dental Care and Dental Education in Europe.”

The Section presented their dental Scholarship Award to E. Zwinkels at the University of Groningen. The Foundation also helped sponsor their project “Bridge the Gap,” which was reported in July/August issue of Dental World.

Last March, their meeting encompassed a program on the 2006 Healthsystem, which is ending the difference between the National Health System and the private Health Assurances. The first presentation was given by Dr. J. den Dekker, advisor for the Governmental Organization College of Health Assurances. Dr. Hehenkamp, a PFA Fellow, discussed the vision of the greatest Health Assurance Companies (VGZ). Dr. L. Zeegers, a PFA Fellow, an old member of the Dutch Dental Organization, presented the viewpoint of the general practitioner.

United States

Alaska

Dr. James Cerney is reorganizing the Section of three Fellows. Alaska is the largest State with its population spread over many isolated towns and villages. Hosting a gathering in one spot is a major undertaking.

California, Northern Section

Fellow Robert L. Boyd was the recipient of UOP’s Dr. Frederick T. West Endowed Chair in Orthodontics at their September Faculty Development Day. Dr. Boyd is the first to be so honored for this position at the Arthur Dugoni School of Dentistry. Professor Boyd, Chairman of the Orthodontics Department, holds certificates in both orthodontics and periodontics. He is a renowned educator, but his research interest in the orthodontic damage to the periodontal tissues has led him to become a principal investigator for the Invisalign appliances in a major research effort. He is a Fellow in PFA, ICD, and ACD. He is also past President of the Edward H. Angle Orthodontic Society. He has had many publications and lectures and the honors that go along with them. He is the 1999 recipient of the John Vallentine Mershon Award from the American Association of Orthodontists. He earned his dental degree from Temple University, his post-graduate certificates from the University of Pennsylvania, and a master’s degree in education from the University of Florida. He has taught at UC-San Francisco for 15 years and has been at UOP since 1996.

Fellow A. Thomas Indresano, Professor and Chair for the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department at UOP’s Dugoni School of Dentistry, was presented by the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) with their Donald B. Osbon Outstanding Educator Award during their 87th annual Meeting in Boston last September. Teaching for 30 years, AAOMS Faculty Section past Chair G. E. Ghall stated that “under his tutelage, Dr. Indresano’s trainees were provided not only the necessary requisites to practice the specialty in a competent manner, but he also instilled in them the highest ethical and moral ideals of a professional.” Dr. Indresano has authored some 90 articles while being involved in numerous research projects that included one funded by NIH—“Long Term Cancer Survivor: Research Initiatives.” He has held many leadership positions in his field, including past President of the American Society of TMJ Surgeons%
