2. March - April

Membership of any organization represents its history, its current activity, and its future. We are only as good as our membership. One goal that we would like to achieve this year is the expansion of our membership with quality, talented individuals with a strong desire to give back to their profession and community. We are blessed with a profession full of these people. Look at yourself, your local PFA Section, and our organization’s national and international membership.

As an organization, we need a strong membership foundation to insure our future. To that goal, we have two key issues to address this year: (1) membership retention, and (2) the addition of new members. In the next few months, you will be called upon to provide tactical input to help us achieve our membership goals.

As I was attending my first PFA Section Meeting as President, two interesting things happened to me. A new Fellow turned to me and said, “Boy, there really are a lot of great dentists in this room.” Another new Fellow could not believe the number of the members attending the Meeting. What really hit home to me about these comments is that most of the time we take our membership for granted. It should be no surprise to any of us that we have been invited to join the Pierre Fauchard Academy because of all the good things we have previously done for our profession and our community. We have all accepted our invitation because of a desire to serve and to do more. As you go to your local, State, and national dental meetings in the upcoming months, I ask you to look around at your colleagues and identify those that would enhance our membership. Ask them to be a part of our efforts. A membership form is available for downloading at http://Fauchard.org/inquiries.htm

Patient Stroke

How to determine if a patient is having a stroke in your office

by past PFA President M. David Campbell

Often symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. The lack of awareness to diagnose this early on, while it is happening, can spell disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage while people nearby fail to recognize its symptoms.

The American Stroke Association has suggested that a bystander, assistant, and/or dentist can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

• Ask the individual to smile;
• Ask the individual to raise both arms;
• Ask the person to speak a simple sentence.

If the individual has trouble with any of these tasks, call 911, the rescue squad, or the nearest hospital immediately. Describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. Best to err on the side of having the individual checked out, than waste precious time for the onset to get worse.

Non-medical volunteers can identify facial weakness, arm weakness, and speech problems. The American Stroke Association urges the general public, and certainly dental personnel, to learn these three questions. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of stroke victims to prevent brain damage, thus making a quick recovery more possible.

Ask your dental staff to familiarize themselves with this procedure and be prepared to call for medical assistance. If the situation is not a stroke, that can be determined by experts. If the patient is having a stroke, prompt action could save a life. This course of action should be taken even if the individual rejects or denies they are in distress. If in your opinion they are in distress of some kind, act quickly.

Many things can trigger a stroke without any forewarning or prior symptoms. Anxiety in coming to the dental office, commencing treatment, or the treatment itself may well be one of those triggering mechanisms. A clear health history office report may not suggest any prior problems, even if a patient’s health history is checked for changes at their regular visits.

A call to your local emergency service, usually 911, will insure that whatever situation the patient is experiencing will be handled promptly. The potential embarrassment of a med unit arriving at your office to check the situation out is insignificant considering the potential good it may do for your patients, or for your own personnel, or for yourself.

It is essential for every dental office to have such an emergency plan in place. At least six month personnel drills to execute such a plan up to calling 911 is simple and takes only seconds to perform.

If the patient is a regular visitor, ask if their health history/medication has changed since you saw them last. Often patients forget to inform their dentist of such changes. If the patient has not been in the office for a while, or ever, be sure to have as complete a health history form filled out and reviewed in advance of starting any treatment. Discuss any questions you have beforehand with the patient. If any complicated treatment is being considered, discuss this with their physician before proceeding. Make such a conversation note in the patient’s chart. Use common sense and due caution in performing any treatment on a patient—for everyone’s sake.

Central Office Report

by Secretary General Richard Kozal

With the initiation of the New Year, the Spring Schedule will be starting at the Community College of Southern Nevada and my teaching duties there will resume. Since our main headquarters office is located there, I will not be far from the phone. However, if I am in class and cannot be reached, please leave a voice message and I will get back to you promptly.

On 18 January, the Management Committee held their quarterly conference call including the Academy’s CPA Dan Jonkers. All the finances were reviewed and found to be in perfect order. The 2005 budget was discussed and will be finalized at the March Meeting in Palm Springs.

The Web site was discussed and new plans for updating its service to our members is ongoing and will have a new appearance in April. President Mike Perpich and President-elect Howard Mark have met with our Webmaster Mark Stanley to go over the new changes in responding to many of the requests from the Section Chair Caucus Meeting at the annual Board Meeting last October.

The Elmer Best Award Ceremony in Montreal was brought up. We are all excited about the ceremony and the arrangements by Canadian Trustee Barry Dolman to make this an outstanding occasion for all Fellows to attend and to explore the beauty of Montreal.

Foundation News

From the Desk of Foundation President Carl Lundgren…

Free Pain Relief in Honduras

There are long lines of people in pain, some of whom have walked a long distance for dental care and maybe waited overnight. We are talking about poverty-stricken people in Honduras, most of whom are from small villages.

One of the Foundation’s Service Grant awardees in 2003 was the Medical, Eye, & Dental International Care Organization (MEDICO) that is based in Texas. Five or six teams of a 19 to 22-person mix of medical, dental, nurses, and lay volunteers spend a week in a site treating patients. A team can treat 1500 to 2300 patients in that week at no cost to the patient. The dental group uses portable dental chairs that were paid for by a grant of $16,000 from the Foundation of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. They also use portable units, generator, and air compressor.

The name of their dental program is “Give Honduran Friends a Smile” and is headed by Dr. Anthony Ciccariello and Dr. Peter Winkler. MEDICO has treated 120,000 people since 1990. Along with the emergency dental treatment, the MEDICO teams stress the importance of prevention.

This is just one of about 285 service grants that have been provided by our Foundation over the last nine years. These service grants have totaled well over $3 million. Huge numbers of dental volunteers are out there providing free dental care. For their contributions to their underserved patients, these volunteers cannot be thanked enough.

Our grant team works diligently to evaluate the applications that come to us. In 2004, we provided 35 service grants and 81 scholarships totaling more than $427,000.

Later, we want to tell you about our grants treating lepers in Japan, Victims of Torture, free cleft palate treatments in Viet Nam and Mexico, care for the homeless, an AIDS Resource Center, and other dental clinics where direct care is provided for the underserved.

From the Desk of Foundation
Executive Director, Dr. Fred Halik...

Please note that the Grants Chairman Gary Lowder has insisted that all applications for grants be submitted by the 1 June 2005 deadline, or they will not be considered in the 2005 grant submissions to the Board.

Rhode Island

Chair and International Trustee Richard Walsh reported a very active year for their Section. Two new Fellows were inducted into membership: Warwick orthodontist Brad Turchetta and Warwick oral surgeon Leland Blough. Dr. Frank Connor, a Providence oral surgeon, received the Distinguished Service Award at their annual Dinner Meeting with some 46 Fellows in attendance. Past PFA President James Kershaw at 94 was in attendance as well. The PFA computer presentation was viewed by the membership.

The anti-Smokeless Tobacco Program, started by past Chair Christine Benoit through a Foundation grant in 2001 is still very active under the initiative of Fellows Frank De Quattro, Michelle Smith-Goncalves, and John Underhill. They give talks at schools, athletic programs, parent assemblies, baseball clinics, and health fairs. They hosted a booth at each of the two State-wide Cancer Awareness Days.

The mentorship program has slipped in activity because Rhode Island does not have its own dental school, and the number of dentists in the State has dwindled. A number of Fellows have volunteered for mentorship, but fewer new dentists are locating in the area. Fellow Marty Nager annually addresses the pre-dental students at the University of Rhode Island to continue to make the students and new dentists aware of this opportunity.

Their third active program is the Section’s Donated Dental Services; 85% of their membership participate in this project.

South Carolina

PFA President-elect Howard Mark attended their section Meeting last 26 February and presented the 2004 President’s Award to past PFA President-elect Gordan Stine of Charleston (St. James Island).

Jim Ott of St. George, Gary Crawford of Provo, Paul Innis of Park City, and Jeremy Ellis of Logan. The Meeting was addressed by Lane Beattie, President of the Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce, who had also been a past State Senator for 12 years. He also served as the Chief State Olympic Officer in managing the 2002 Salt lake City Winter Olympics. Dr. Gary Lowder was honored by his Section in receiving a Special State Section Chair Award for his dedicated services to the Utah Section, PFA internationally, and now as the Foundation Grants Chairman.

Washington State

Sarah Fraker, Keith Leonard, Randall Ogata, and Richard Seims. The induction was held at a cocktail party prior to the Washington Oral Health Foundation Gala.

Plans are being formulated for participation in the 14th Annual Continuing Dental Education Day with the Washington State Sections of the ACD and ICD. The events provide scholarship funds for the dental students at the University of Washington School of Dentistry.

Wyoming

Chair Scott Houfek hosted their annual Breakfast Meeting during the Wyoming Dental Association Meeting with ACD, ICD, and ADI. Four new inductees are in the planning stages for this year.
