Central Office Report

by Secretary General Richard Kozal

Academy dues for U.S. Fellows for 2005 are $110; one-time Initiation fees for New Fellows are $150; dues and fee for a new member totals $260 to be paid in USD attached to the nomination form. All new Fellow certificates and pins will be sent to the Section Chair. Allow at least 14-20 days for the preparation and mailing. For short notice requests, call 1-800/232-0099. The preferred method of presentation should be at a formal induction ceremony, such as an appropriate dental meeting or social function.

The 2005 dues are being processed with excellent returns including Foundation donations. The dues are posted into the Academy’s computer database files. The Foundation donations are posted on the Web site. The 2004 unpaid Fellows have received their final notice last September to U.S. and Canadian Fellows. The final list of delinquent, resigned, passed away, and returned mail will be sent to all Section Chairs and Trustees to help provide assistance with those names on the list.

The 2004-2005 Leadership Directory has been sent out for the Academy and the Foundation. ANY corrections noted, please inform the Central Office immediately. This would be most helpful and appreciated.

Our Web site now contains the E-mail Directory both by Regions and alphabetically.

You can post your Section Meeting dates on line at our Web site under “Calendar of Events.” Complete the form and send it electronically to the Webmaster. Also send a copy of the dates and any information on your activities to Dental World Editor James Brophy at the e-mail or mail address in the Officers’ Box of this newsletter.

New items on the Web site for downloading under “Inquiries” are (1) Nomination forms, (2) the new Constitution & Bylaws, (3) the current PFA Brochure, and (4) the PFA logos.

A CD Rom Disk containing the Academy’s complete Web site is available to all Section Chairs upon request.

Letters for the 2005 Fauchard Gold Medal Award have been mailed out to the 16 past recipients for their nominations.

Academy membership nomination forms, Section forms for the Distinguished Dentist Award, Academy Awards Recommendation forms for use by the Trustees and Chairs are available by request in writing, e-mailing, or calling the numbers in the Officers’ Box. Please include the full name as it is to appear on the award/certificate including middle name or initial and the proper degree, such as DMD, DDS, or equivalent. Include the address of the recipient so a congratulatory letter can be sent from the Academy President. Allow 20-30 days for preparation and mailing.

PFA Awards Recommendation form for special awards needs to be completed in full to properly make the presentation at our annual Awards Luncheon, or where and when presented. The Board of Trustees seeks recommendations for the various awards and as a leader in our profession, your recommendations will be presented to the Awards Committee. Upon their approval, these recommendations will be submitted to the Board for final approval. All recommendations for awards require a brief letter of recommendation and current Curriculum Vitae. These awards include (1) the PFA Gold Medal (U.S. candidates), (2) the Elmer S. Best Award (International candidates), (3) the PFA Distinguished Service Award (U.S. candidates), (4) the Certificate of Merit Award (International candidates), (5) Honorary Fellowship Award (both U.S. and International candidates), and (6) the Dental Industry Award of Recognition (U.S. and International candidates).

Our President, Michael Perpich, encourages all Section Chairs to make an extra effort this year to recruit worthy individuals for Fellowship in your Academy. With older members passing away or converting to Life Membership, we need to replace their numbers with new Fellows. This year’s international goal is 500 new Fellows.

If you have any questions, call me at 1-800/232-0099, or e-mail the office.

From the Desk of Foundation President Carl Lundgren…

Our Financial Team Is Applauded

Our financial success has been implemented by three long-term people, aside from our Board, that we need to have you know more about. The Foundation was established in 1986 and a donation of $5 million was given us in 1994 by Dr. Brenes-Espinach of Costa Rica. Under the direction of our former Treasurer, Dr. George Higue, and the Board, the investment program, augmented by other donations, has been exceptionally lucrative and sound. Dr. Bill Kort is the current Treasurer. Over the last 10 years we have awarded, in grants and in scholarships, nearly $4 million. And we still have a Fair Market value of $7 million.

The first of the three people is our investment consultant for 17 years, Frank J. Buchholz. He is the Senior Vice President of Bank of America Investment Services, Inc. of Newport Beach, California. He advises clients on investment strategies, including fixed income, equity, investment management, and insurance needs.

Frank started in the securities business in 1982 with Smith Barney. He joined the Bank of America in 1985 and worked in Los Angeles on the trading floor prior to joining the private bank. He holds Series 7 and Series 63 Security Licenses, and also holds a Principal’s License, as well as life and variable annuity insurance licenses.

Frank has enjoyed great success in partnering with the Private Bank. His production has consistently placed him in the top 10 out of 800 financial advisors nationwide.

Our CPA firm is Windes & McLaughery, one of the largest and most prestigious firms in Los Angeles County. Our particular CPA is Donita Joseph, who is a Senior Partner. She has been managing our tax accounting for 10 years. She manages the accounts for about nine other nonprofit groups. Nonprofits, if they meet all of the IRS requirements, are taxed at a rate of only 1%.

Our accountant for the last 10 years has been Maria Bustamonte who also is employed by Dr. George Higue in his real estate business. Due to Dr. Higue’s generosity, the Foundation experiences no expense. Maria is an honors graduate of California State University of Long Beach after majoring in finance and accounting. She manages the issuing of all the checks and produces highly detailed financial reports to the Board and to the tax preparer.

These are our three most important people who have made our Foundation the success it is today.

From the Desk of Foundation Executive Director, Dr. Fred Halik…

The PFA Foundation Seeks Grant Applications

Interesting, helpful, and useful projects emphasizing the concept of access of dental care to underserved people at home and around the world was the theme of many grants funded by the Foundation this year. Dr. Lundgren, our Foundation President, reports that at the Annual Meeting of Trustees, grants in excess of a third of a million dollars were approved for distribution.

A few typical examples from the 30 approved and worthy projects include:

• The Maryland Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped, who, through donated services by dentists and suppliers, have been able to create dental prostheses for individuals who would not be able to gain employment otherwise due to their appearance.

• The Netherlands Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy has designed a project for teams of maxillofacial surgeons, as well as general dentists and other specialists, to treat children with congenital cleft lip, jaw, and palate disorders in Laos. They also teach modern therapy procedures to the local professionals.

• The HEALS (Health Establishments at Local Schools) Project in Alabama has brought dental care to large groups of underserved children in distressed areas of Huntsville, Alabama.

• The Howard Dental Center Educational Outreach Project in Colorado brings critically needed oral health care to HIV/AIDS patients who are debilitated and no longer are able to afford private care

• The Emergency Dental Bus sponsored by the Board of French Dental Surgeons and by the French Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy brings care directly to the needy, underserved people of Paris.

• The Himalayan Dental Relief Project, originating in Colorado, uses volunteers to bring dental care to various areas of Asia and now in India and Vietnam.

• The Ben Massell Dental Clinic, sponsored by the Jewish Family and Career Services, brings free dental services to low-income and indigent individuals in the Metropolitan Atlanta area.

• The Thousand Smiles Foundation from California brings craniofacial surgical and accompanying dental care to the huge population of children born with cleft lips and palates in Latin America.

Another major concern of the Foundation of the Pierre Fauchard Academy is in the area of dental student education. The Trustees of the Foundation once again committed financial scholarship grants, $1500 this year, one to each dental school in the United States and 28 other countries across the world. The school administration selects a student who has demonstrated leadership ability, high academic achievement, and for whom additional financial help is necessary.

These programs are making a difference throughout the world. The PFA Foundation is seeking grant applications from organizations participating in such programs. Application forms are available from the Executive Director Frederick J. Halik, DDS, 30 Spruce Ridge, Fairport, New York, 14450-4278.

Please note that the Grants Chairman Gary Lowder has insisted that all applications for grants be submitted by the 1 June 2005 deadline, or they will not be considered in the 2005 grant submissions to the Board.
