Central Office Report

by Secretary General Richard Kozal

With the initiation of the New Year, the Spring Schedule will be starting at the Community College of Southern Nevada and my teaching duties there will resume. Since our main headquarters office is located there, I will not be far from the phone. However, if I am in class and cannot be reached, please leave a voice message and I will get back to you promptly.

On 18 January, the Management Committee held their quarterly conference call including the Academy’s CPA Dan Jonkers. All the finances were reviewed and found to be in perfect order. The 2005 budget was discussed and will be finalized at the March Meeting in Palm Springs.

The Web site was discussed and new plans for updating its service to our members is ongoing and will have a new appearance in April. President Mike Perpich and President-elect Howard Mark have met with our Webmaster Mark Stanley to go over the new changes in responding to many of the requests from the Section Chair Caucus Meeting at the annual Board Meeting last October.

The Elmer Best Award Ceremony in Montreal was brought up. We are all excited about the ceremony and the arrangements by Canadian Trustee Barry Dolman to make this an outstanding occasion for all Fellows to attend and to explore the beauty of Montreal.

If you have any questions, call me at
1-800/232-0099, or e-mail the office.

From the Desk of Foundation President Carl Lundgren…

Free Pain Relief in Honduras

There are long lines of people in pain, some of whom have walked a long distance for dental care and maybe waited overnight. We are talking about poverty-stricken people in Honduras, most of whom are from small villages.

One of the Foundation’s Service Grant awardees in 2003 was the Medical, Eye, & Dental International Care Organization (MEDICO) that is based in Texas. Five or six teams of a 19 to 22-person mix of medical, dental, nurses, and lay volunteers spend a week in a site treating patients. A team can treat 1500 to 2300 patients in that week at no cost to the patient. The dental group uses portable dental chairs that were paid for by a grant of $16,000 from the Foundation of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. They also use portable units, generator, and air compressor.

The name of their dental program is “Give Honduran Friends a Smile” and is headed by Dr. Anthony Ciccariello and Dr. Peter Winkler. MEDICO has treated 120,000 people since 1990. Along with the emergency dental treatment, the MEDICO teams stress the importance of prevention.

This is just one of about 285 service grants that have been provided by our Foundation over the last nine years. These service grants have totaled well over $3 million. Huge numbers of dental volunteers are out there providing free dental care. For their contributions to their underserved patients, these volunteers cannot be thanked enough.

Our grant team works diligently to evaluate the applications that come to us. In 2004, we provided 35 service grants and 81 scholarships totaling more than $427,000.

Later, we want to tell you about our grants treating lepers in Japan, Victims of Torture, free cleft palate treatments in Viet Nam and Mexico, care for the homeless, an AIDS Resource Center, and other dental clinics where direct care is provided for the underserved.

From the Desk of Foundation
Executive Director, Dr. Fred Halik...

Please note that the Grants Chairman Gary Lowder has insisted that all applications for grants be submitted by the 1 June 2005 deadline, or they will not be considered in the 2005 grant submissions to the Board.
