European Sojourn continued...

Paris—the City of Light

12–17 June 2005

Editor Jim Brophy and photographer Shirley Brophy spent Sunday and Monday gently interviewing Pierre and Seba Marois at their apartment.

President-elect Howard and Sheila Mark arrived by train on Monday and settled into the hotel across the street. Drs. Mark, Marois, Brophy, and their wives had a dinner meeting that evening to plan the upcoming events.

Wednesday was the Hall of Fame Ceremony at the headquarters of Le Conseil National de l’Ordre des Chirurgiens Dentistes in Paris. Conseil President Yves Mahe opened the ceremony with an introductory address.

European Trustee Hubert Ouvrard thanked President Mahe for his kind remarks and for inviting the PFA Section to the Conseil National headquarters to hold their ceremonies. He then introduced his successor as Section Chair for France, Dean Marie Laure Boy-LeFevre. Dr. Ouvrard gave apologies for President Michael Perpich’s absence for familial reasons, but stated that such reasons are as important in France as they are in the United States.

President-elect Howard Mark also gave regrets from PFA President Michael Perpich before going into history of the two Wall of Fame plaques memorializing two renowned individuals in Dr. Frederick S. McKay of the United States, and Dr. Morinosuke Chiwaki of Japan. From their work, we are able to “build upon their gifts for the betterment on mankind.” Dr. Mark then read the citations for both dentists whose new plaques had been placed on the Wall of Fame in their headquarters meeting room.

The reception following the ceremonies

PFA President-elect Howard Mark then bestowed PFA Honorary Fellowship on Conseil National President Yves Mahe for his outstanding accomplishments, dedication to the profession, and recognition for his talents by his colleagues. This is done with the approval of the International PFA Board of Trustees.

Conseil President Mahe then presented to PFA President Michael Perpich, through President-elect Howard Mark as his representative, the Conseil National de l’Ordre Gold Medal awarded by its members.

Dr. Mark accepted the Gold Medal on behalf of President Perpich by stating, “I know that he will treasure this recognition, this honor, very highly and will appreciate what it means. As President, Dr. Perpich has led the Academy capably and well, and deserves this token of esteem to the fullest.”

Conseil President Mahe then gave a brief description of all the contributions to our profession and to his country by Dr. Pierre Marois in presenting to him the Gold Medal of the Conseil National de l’Ordre des Chirurgiens Dentistes. This award was presented by President Mahe on behalf of the entire Conseil National.

Following the honors, Section Chair of France Boy-LeFevre and Trustee Ouvrard inducted many new Fellows into the Academy.

A reception of food and drink commenced after the festivities were closed.

That evening, PFA sponsored their intimate dinner party for Conseil President Mahe, Trustee-emeritus Pierre Marois and his wife Seba, Trustee Hubert Ouvrard and his wife, French Chair Marie Laure Boy-LeFevre, President-elect Howard Mark and Sheila, and Editor Jim Brophy and wife Shirley—which is traditional, but so necessary at this time to socialize with all the new officers.

“Dr. Howard Mark, we French are very attached to our history and culture. Now, thanks to the Pierre Fauchard Academy, a Frenchman’s name titles this world-renowned institution. How can we not be grateful to you?

“We are very proud that one of the most prestigious dental organizations concerning the art and science of dentistry is named after one of our ancestors, Pierre Fauchard, founder of modern dentistry. You must come from a great country to have chosen to baptize such an organization with the name of a foreigner, even if he is very famous.

As you are a citizen of a great country, a fact sometimes not recognized by all Frenchmen as such, please be assured that here, our thankfulness will never be put into question.

“I would like to testify here to the gratefulness of the entire Conseil National de l’Ordre for your unfailing support, which is regularly renewed for our Association du Bus Social Dentaire. This mobile dental clinic was put into service by the Conseil National to provide emergency dental care to all who are in need of such in Paris and its suburbs. This program helps this vulnerable part of the population to attain classic dental treatment. With your support, the Pierre Fauchard Academy is a link in this chain of solidarity, which is an honor to our profession.

“Please let me congratulate you and the organization you represent and accept my profound thanks.”

Conseil President
Yves Mahe

The evening dinner party

Thursday was spent seeing the last of Paris and preparing to return home. An evening dinner hosted by the Jim and Shirley Brophy was a delightful opportunity to review the many wonderful friends we made and the events we attended. Pierre was not feeling up to participating due to his energy batteries running low. We missed him greatly.

Friday we all headed out for the United States, looking forward to get together again in Montreal this August for the FDI and PFA Meetings.
