FOUNDATION

From the Desk of Foundation President Carl Lundgren…

Something to Emulate

Every Section can do this, so here are some ideas that have been working well for years in the Southern California PFA Section in the United States. While it is true that this Section is large, any Section can do it. Under the leadership of nine-year Section Chairman Dr. Charles Eller (who is also a PFA International Trustee), a carefully planned annual meeting includes the following:

• An initiation ceremony format their new Fellows that includes the distribution of PFA Medallions and Ribbons as well as the Certificate of Membership.

• The Section Meeting is held in conjunction with the State Dental Meeting to increase attendance.

• The Pierre Fauchard Plaque is awarded to the outstanding Dentist of the Year, as determined by peers, in the area of the Section. Another outstanding person is selected by the recipient to narrate, for the audience, the attributes of the award recipient. (Only half of the Sections currently do this, and they all should be doing this.)

• Any Foundation grants within the Section are acknowledged and described in print and with a video narrated by the principal of the project.

• Dental schools within the Section are selected to receive the Teacher of the Year Award, which is chosen by the Senior dental students, recognizing the teacher who has taught them the most.

• Dental schools within the Section are to select the PFA Student of the Year for that Award and to chose the student who is to receive the Foundation’s $1500 scholarship.

• Any Special Honor Awards.

• A printed program is provided to each guest that includes the meeting agenda, the description of the PFA and its mission, the list of new Fellows, a comprehensive description of the PFA Plaque recipient, the name of the student scholarship award recipient, the name of the Teacher of the Year award recipient, any PFA International Officers, Trustees or Past Presidents, the current PFA Section Officers, and all former Section Chairmen.

• The announcement and special recognition of special volunteer service projects conducted by the Section.

A newsletter is published annually and mailed to every member by the Southern California Section Editor, Bill Mihram. All of the above are included, accompanied by photos that were taken at the most recent meeting. This includes a group picture of the new Fellows and all of those that were given awards.

Spouses and families of the award recipients are encouraged to attend the Annual Meeting. Plenty of advance publicity and announcements are sent out, along with telephone calls. This ensures an excellent attendance. Indirect values for this type of dynamic meeting include: (1) a greater audience attendance; (2) greater ascendance of the Academy among the ranks of other organizations; (3) the selection of new Fellows is made easier; and (4) the financial base of the Section is solidified.

It lets people know that the Academy is doing a tremendous amount of service in the communities, especially in direct volunteer dental care for the underserved. More than $3.5 million in grant and scholarship funds have been distributed by the Foundation of the PFA in this fashion during the last 10 years. This encourages members to donate money to the Foundation because it is so well managed and has a mission that is superb.

Every Section is encouraged to upgrade their program. It makes a lot of people happy to be recognized by their peers. And honestly it feels good to conduct programs of this nature.

Report From Foundation Executive Director Fred Halik

The grant application season has been exceedingly active. Since last Fall, I have sent out over 103 application forms on the request of the applicants. Fifty-three applications were submitted, particularly in the final days before the deadline. Thirty-five were processed to the Grants Committee; 18 were rejected. The total amount being requested for is $351,660.40 and the rejected applications were for $488,500.

Letters were written to each rejected application with the reasons for the rejection. These include successive or multi-year applications, claim for more dollars than we allow, pay for salaries, transportation, shipping, scholarships, hand-written and barely decipherable information, and most frequently, to no specific destination for the FPFA funds.

The dental scholarship program was initiated in February with a mailing containing one letter from the Academy for their Senior Scholastic Achievement Award and one letter from the Foundation for their cash grant scholarship, and a note explaining the difference. Even at that, there is a considerable amount of confusion about the two separate awards.

By May, all but 12 dental schools had responded. Another letter was sent to those 12 schools. Ten instantaneously replied with a series of weird excuses. The University of Pennsylvania and the University of California San Francisco have never responded.

Non-U.S. dental schools have progressed about as well. Language barriers, strange (to us) academic years, unusual educational procedures, and administration create confusion. One situation in Japan was that 11 scholarship checks back for years, sent to the correctly given addresses, were never cashed. Trustee Mamoru Sakuda investigated this phenomenon and discovered that the students did not understand how to convert the dollar amount to yen. As we face these problems, and find out what causes them, we are solving the situation.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at our Philadelphia Meeting in October.

Australasia

International Trustee Jonathan Rogers reports that their Section held their annual Breakfast Meeting last March during the Australian National Congress where some 1700 Delegates attended. Their Section also set a record attendance with 110 Fellows at the Breakfast. Section Chair Mark Sinclair welcomed the crowd and gave comments on the status of PFA in context with dentistry both domestically and globally. Then Trustee Jonathan Rogers presented their Distinguished Service Award to PFA Vice President William Winspear, their former Trustee, and stated, “he has served PFA with great distinction as its International Trustee of this Section, as well as Secretary/Treasurer for more years than he cares to remember. He and I have worked together for many years as Trustees of this organization, and he has continually impressed me with his commitment to everything he does, and with loyalty to his friends and colleagues. He is a great ambassador for dentistry both in Australia and overseas. His abilities have been recognized by the Board of Trustees in the USA and we are all very pleased and proud that he was elected Vice President of the PFA in October 2004 in Orlando. On behalf of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the Australasian Section, I am very pleased to present to Dr. William Winspear the Distinguished Dentist Award with the PFA Honour Plaque in recognition of his contribution to dentistry and the Academy.”

PFA Vice President William Winspear then presented the Retiring Section Chair Citation from the Academy for Dr. Jonathan Rogers service as the Section Chairman.

Their Section then inducted 26 new Fellows into the Academy. Another 16 initiates were inducted in absentia.

Egypt

Abdel Hadi Nasif, President of the Egyptian Clinical Dental Society, announced their 12th International Dental Congress to be held in Cairo from 22-24 March 2006. Philippines

Chairman Diampo Lim reported holding their midyear Meeting at the historic Manila Hotel with Dr. Hernandez as Guest Speaker. He talked on “The Incidence of Cardiovascular Diseases in the Elderly.” Their business meeting discussed pursuing the outreach program of the Academy, particularly the project to help the victims of the landslide in Infanta, Quezon, a Philippine Province that was hit by a typhoon. That resulted in a landslide, which killed hundreds and left thousands homeless.

In February the officers entreated the GMA Foundation to donate 50,000 pesos to helping the victims and their PFA Section donated through their Foundation.

Last May, in conjunction with the 97th Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting of the Philippine Dental Association, the PFA Section held its 25th Annual Meeting and Induction Ceremony at the Pan Pacific Hotel. Eight new members were initiated with the assistance of Fellows Primo Gonzales, Ruben Navia, former Chair Rufino Achacoso, Sonfronio San Juan and Jose Virata. Renown orthopedic surgeon Dr. Antonio Rivera spoke on “Bone Degenerative Diseases.” The Section presented their Humanitarian Award to PFA Section Founding member Eusebio Nazareno.

The Philippine Section also were involved in a dental outreach program at Botolan, Zambales Province, with the students of the Aeta Tribe. Dean Diampo Lim and Fellow Rufino Achacoso (2003 Elmer Best recipient) led the participation.

Mark Zajkowski from South Portland, Karl Woods from Houlton, Jeffrey Dow from Waterville, Jonathan Shenkin from Bangor, and Randy Thivierge from Rockport. Inducted but not present were Drs. Paul Auclair of Portland, Wendy Alpaugh of Stonington, Barry Saltz of Portland, David Olivas of Rockport, Dan Armstrong of Portland, and Frank Musciano of Portland.

The PFA Initiation was highlighted in the News Journal of the Maine Dental Association.

Chair Lisa Howard notes that the Maine Dental Association is attempting to attract more dentists into their State and has enlisted PFA, ICD, and ACD to take over this important effort. New energy and enthusiasm is expected to result from this activity. Many of the newly inducted Fellows have or had leadership roles in the State, which should bring new ideas and approaches to this joint project.
