Leadership and Other Considerations

What makes the Pierre Fauchard International Honor Dental Academy unique and different from other honor organizations? In my book, it has to do with the tenets of the Academy, its mission, and its goals. There is no question that other groups, who are considered to be outstanding and of high caliber, have lofty aims and purport to be significant in one area or another: i.e., ACD in the field of ethics; ICD in the field of journalism. They also have aspects that involve education and service to others, but none of them equal PFA in its pursuit of excellence in leadership and service to community, nation, and region.

Take the history of the Academy, for instance. When it was founded in 1936 by Elmer C. Best and his colleagues, dental literature was a sorry mess. It was generally proprietary in nature, published by dental manufacturers who proselytized their own particular products without any research or other substantiation, and did not follow many precepts of truth. Dr. Best’s group decried this situation, urged the dental profession to change this situation and recapture peer-reviewed journalism for its own. What we see today is a reflection of that effort, and we must applaud the foresight and the intensity of purpose with which this small cadre brought about essential change. That is the essence of leadership, and it has remained strong within the Academy ever since.

Over the intervening years, the focus on literature changed and the directions of the Academy altered to reflect increasing interest in recognizing the leaders of Dentistry and emulating them. This led to the Gold Medal Award for excellence in the United States, the Distinguished Service Awards for leadership, the Dental Industry Award that recognizes manufacturers and suppliers of dental equipment for innovative contributions, the Elmer C. Best Memorial Award for excellence in other areas of the world—all of which have become synonymous with prestige and high worth. In addition, a so-called Hall of Fame was established to enshrine those who have been considered the giants of the profession, with appropriate ceremonies at the Fench Dental Society's headquarters in Paris, France—certainly a fitting location in memory of the founding father of modern Dentistry, Pierre Fauchard. Plaques are also on display at the National Museum of Dentistry in Baltimore, Maryland. Much goes into researching these names, and kudos to the committee that has this enormous task! Again, the stress is on leadership!

Fate intervened in 1990 with the bequest of the estate of a Cost Rican practitioner, Dr. Brenes Espinach, to another arm of the Academy, the Foundation of the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

The value of this legacy, once all the dust settled and it was finalized, has enabled the Foundation to augment the activities of the Academy in a multiplicity of ways. Over the past 10 years, approximately $3.5 million has been awarded to dental service projects across the globe that have passed the strong scrutiny of a dedicated Grants Committee and have been deemed worthy, and to selected third-year dental students, passing into their fourth year, in the form of scholarships in all US schools of dentistry, most of the Canadian dental schools, and some 28 dental schools in other countries. The service projects bring oral health care to needy peoples, impoverished neighborhoods and areas, and to many neglected regions both here and abroad. With over 130 applications annually, it is a daunting task for the Committee to wade through the extensive documentation, search their own consciences as to how to judge these, and then to finally decide on some 30 to fund. What is even more interesting is that these 30 are secondarily reviewed by the Foundation Board of Trustees in concert at their annual meeting in October, before the final okay is authorized. Nothing is left to chance!

So now, back to my theme! All who have been selected as candidates for Fellowship in the Academy have likewise to pass muster. Hopefully, those inducted have truly passed the test, have been among the leaders in dentistry, have dedicated themselves towards making the dental profession responsible and responsive, and have earned the sobriquet of “dental leader” from their colleagues. A plaque on the wall, a pin in the lapel, a medallion around the neck: none of these are worth what it cost to fabricate them, if they are not put to good use in the service of others, in the raising the bar of professionalism and ethics, and in the pursuance of excellence.

I hope this overview has reminded us all as to the true value of Fellowship in the Academy. I urge each of you to reach out, identify those who would add esteem and worth to the Academy, bring their names to the attention of your Section Chair or your specific Trustee for consideration in the next class of inductees, and spread the word about who we are, what we are about, and why being a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy is an honor unto itself!

The annual meeting is not far away, and the dates are October 16-18. If you have not made your reservations for it, please do so. We would welcome all of you in Las Vegas; that would be something to shout about!

Be proud of the Academy, and celebrate your being a part of it!

Section Chair Charles Eller opens their annual Awards Luncheon

May 1 is a busy day in history. In times long past, it was Maypole Day, an ancient celebration of the Rites of Spring. Recent tradition has the Communist Workers’ Day celebrations hosted in certain countries. This year U.S. cities were crowded with immigration marches. The California Dental Association was hosting their annual Spring Scientific Session in Anaheim near Disneyland. The Southern Section of California held their 36th Annual Awards Luncheon with nearly 150 Fellows and dignitaries attending. And the International PFA held their 2006 Management Team Committee Meeting.

Outgoing Chairman and International PFA Trustee Charles G. Eller gave the introductions, particularly noting that the PFA International Officers were in attendance with President Howard Mark of Connecticut, President-elect William Winspear from Australia, Vice President James Englander of Wisconsin, immediate past President Michael Perpich of Minnesota, Executive Secretary Richard Kozal of Nevada, and Editor James Brophy of Illinois. Dr. William Frank gave the Invocation.

PFA International President Howard Mark spoke on the Academy Mission. Past PFA President and past Foundation President Carl Lundgren had an ankle injury and could not attend to give the Foundation Report. The past PFA Gold Medal recipient James Vernetti also could not attend, having fallen off his bike and sustained injury as well. Past PFA President and Foundation Treasurer-emeritus George Higue was also detained. Our long-time Fellows of that Section were deeply missed.

Dr. Richard Marias of the MEND Project that had received a Foundation grant gave a brief presentation of his program.

Tanaka and Jim Vernetti.

The California, Southern Section boasts of eight past International PFA Presidents in the 70 years since the founding of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Those who achieved such honor are Drs. Albert Vielle (1962), Hugo Kulstad (1970), George Higue (1974), Clifford Loader (1978), Edwin Halverson (1982), Foster Bens (1991), Shigeo Ryan Kishi (1998), and Carl Lundgren (1994).

In closing, Dr. Charles Eller thanked his officers for all their help in the past years—Vice Chair Frank T. Curry, past Chair Steven Ferriot, and his outstanding Editor William Mihram. He then passed the gavel of Section Chair leadership to Dr. D. Douglas Cassat as a most successful PFA event was brought to an end.

Everyone had such an excellent time, the luncheon attendees were slow to leave, meeting old friends, renewing acquaintances, and making new friends.

Annual Management Team Meeting

Monday, 1 May 2006

L-R, seated, Vice President James Englander, President-elect William Winspear, President Howard Mark, Immediate past President Michael Perpich; standing, Accountant Dan Jonker, Southern California Chair Douglas Cassat, Editor James Brophy, Trustee Charles Eller, and Secretary General Richard Kozal

President Howard Mark called the Management Committee Meeting to order with the Invocation given by President-elect William Winspear. The Minutes from the annual 2005 Board Meeting in Philadelphia were approved.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The President reported a slow but logical growth in the Academy that has stabilized us on a sounder basis. The Academy is on a more secure financial foundation than ever before due to better fiscal controls and a closer oversight on expenditures, while at the same time expanding its outreach. Most of this is due to the officers, who deeply care about the Academy and their performance as a team.

The implementation of the strategic plan will do more in establishing appropriate priorities for programs, Fellowship growth, and retention. Use of our Web site will increase internal communication as we go forward. More careful evaluation of committee functioning as it relates to our mission will enable us to proceed in a more functional manner. Fellowship and retention are the cornerstones of the Academy’s continuation as the premier international honor dental service organization. But much more needs to be accomplished to see that this happens. State and Regional components need to be assisted in every way possible and to insure that their leadership is addressing these goals. We need the reports and projected activities from our Section leaders to be able assess how the Management Team can react to their needs in sufficient time to review our suggestions for the Las Vegas Annual Meeting.

SECRETARY GENERAL’S REPORT

Secretary General Richard Kozal reported that 30 Dentist of the Year Awards were prepared for as many Section presentations, along with three outgoing Section Chair plagues. A joint mailing by the Academy and the Foundation went out to 54 dental schools for the individual student awards and scholarships.

Membership dues notices for 2005 had been sent out with a very good initial response. Delinquent members will be turned over to requesting Section Chairs for follow up.

The Web site continues to be modified and improved. The articles on the history of dentistry are very successful and attract many visitors to our site. The information in our online Membership Directory is updated routinely.

Quarterly Management Team Conferences to review the budget and the finances are held regularly in conjunction with the Budget and Finance Committee.

PFA has filed all the necessary paperwork with the State of Nevada to act as a foreign corporation operating in Nevada.

The Central Office has requested that we stay in the Four Seasons Hotel for our Meetings and social functions for the annual 2006 Meetings in Las Vegas. Notices have been sent out to the officers and a schedule of our activities has been regularly posted online and in Dental World.

Life Member letters were sent out last January. Subscribing to DW is optional for them.

Voluntary donations for the Foundation have risen, mostly from Fellows in the United States.

The current PFA pamphlet has been updated with new information cards.

The printing bill for DA/DW has been paid through last year. Our publisher has informed us that our subscription rate to Dental Abstracts will go up for next year by 4%.

Dues notices to the lock box have been very effective in having them deposited daily and accounted for with updating regularly.

The yellow nomination card, mailed with the dues statements, has netted nearly 300 nominees.

All outstanding invoices are reviewed and paid in a timely fashion. There are currently no outstanding invoices as of this date. The financial statements and bank reports are included in this meeting packet for Committee review. Our accountant Dan Jonker prepares our PFA financial report. The CPA Company of John Kopczyk, Ltd. of Chicago reviews that report.

AUDITOR’S REPORT

The Financial Report was reviewed by our accountant, line for line. Some line item slots were questioned and either combined or initiated new ones to better display our financial picture. Dan Jonker expressed praise for our successful financial picture, after some years of financial struggling. Everything was in perfect order.

Management Team in session

WEB SITE

Our Web site has demonstrated continual growth and interest. Traffic has grown 40% in the last two years alone, with a constant upward trend. The most visited sites are our “publications”—Dental World and the Journal of Dental History. Then comes “inquiries” and thirdly “awards.” New editable pages for all the Officers and Trustees enable almost instantaneous communication to our Fellows. Immediate past President Michael Perpich has been working on this and can assist in introducing these sites to the Officers.

Language translations are now being tested with French being the first attempt. Spanish will follow. English continues to be the language of international business. While the usage of computers has reached over 1 billion people who spend an average of 30 hours a month online, the largest percent of population usage by continent are North America and Australia—both English-speaking areas.

More forms are able to be downloaded off our Web site.

FOUNDATION REPORT

President Mark had attended their Interim Meeting in Chicago earlier in the month and discussed the progress of their plans, particularly those regarding their fund raising. The Committee reported what they had done with the Foundation 2005 grants for the Web site, the Academy Museum, and Dental World. The Secretary General noted that the voluntary dues contributions to the Foundation had been coming in well, particularly from the United States Fellows. The Academy Grant requests for 2006 were discussed.

CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS

The changes made at the Philadelphia Meeting were integrated into the legal documents for further review. Some suggestions were made for Chapter VIII—Nominations and Elections.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Secretary General Richard Kozal commented that the yellow nomination cards had been coming in with some nominations for 38 States and Canada. The membership goals for next year ought to be the same, with emphasis on retention to stop the bleeding from that source.

NOMINATION COMMITTEE

Immediate past President Michael Perpich presented the candidates for election/ moving up for the Las Vegas Annual Board Meeting. They are:

Dr. Howard Mark of Connecticut succeeds to the position of Immediate past President

PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE

Chair James Englander presented an in-depth report suggesting some guidelines for discussion. The main gist of the report was to break down the Publications Committee into three subcommittees: Publications, Publicity, and Web site. Also direction was requested as to whether a long-range plan be established for the future that our publications should take. The last one drawn up was in 1999.

AWARDS COMMITTEE

Chair James Englander reported that the Board of Trustees had ratified the Awards Committee’s Award recommendations:

Dr. Pierre Machtou
of Paris for the Elmer S. Best Memorial Award

Dr. Rex Ingraham
of California for the PFA Gold Medal

Dr. H. Raymond Klein
for the PFA Distinguished Service Award

Dr. Carl Lundgren
for the PFA Distinguished Service Award

HALL OF FAME COMMITTEE

Chair Kevin L. Roach reported that the Harris National Museum in Baltimore has space for 20 more plaques. Currently, there are 16 distinguished dental individuals, including Drs. McKay and Chiwaki. The main venue is in the Paris Dental Headquarters. But our Hall of Fame is also featured on the PFA Web site as well as online at the ADA Headquarters Building in Chicago. The next Hall of Fame Installation visit to Paris is scheduled for 2007 in conjunction with a major dental meeting being organized by International Trustee Hubert Ouvrard.

Those Honourees, approved by the Board and awaiting formal induction are:

Dr. Terrance Ward
of the United Kingdom

Dr. Maynard K. Hine
of Indiana

Dr. Rafiuddin Ahmed
of India

Dr. Edward H. Angle
of the United States

Additional names for future approval that have been suggested and need Board approval and full committee support are:

Dr. Raymond Begg
of Australia

Dr. Thomas W. Evans
of Pennsylvania

PRESIDENT-ELECT’S REPORT

Dr. William Winspear attended the Formal Dinner of the Australasia Section in Adelaide, South Australia, which was organized by Dr. Richard Sawers. Dr. Winspear has also been working on the Constitution and ByLaws Committee as well as helping to establish criteria for the Hall of Fame Committee procedures. The Strategic Planning Committee proposes no action to the document but will continue to monitor the need for such. The Budget and Finance Committee is about to commence preparation of the 2007 Budget.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Dr. James Englander has served six years as Trustee and 10 years as Chair for the dynamic Wisconsin Section before being elected to start in the Executive Officers’ Chairs. He currently has served for many years on the Awards Committee and this year on the Publications Committee. "I have been encouraged to become more involved after past President Gary Lowder redirected our mission to service and recognition, past President Kevin Roach redefined the Academy structure while setting new objectives and goals, past President Mike Perpich created the atmosphere for moving ahead with projects that fulfill the Academy’s purpose, and President Howard Mark with President-elect William Winspear have initiated the leadership to begin the journey with enthusiasm and renewed energy."

EDITOR’S REPORT

Editor Jim Brophy and his photographer Shirley Brophy have become familiar faces at many PFA events to chronicle our happenings for posterity through pictures and the written word. Besides editing our Dental World, Jim has been working with the Foundation in their fund-raising campaign and with other Academy and Foundation committees. He and Shirley, like Richard and Judy Kozal, serve as ambassadors for our PFA projects. In 15 years of service to the Academy as Editor, Dr. Brophy has collected the experience and history of our organization to be of contributing value to all Fellows who request his help. As new innovations are available to expand our message, our publication has adopted them to make our primary means of communicating both informative and interesting.

FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE

International Trustee for Latin America, Dr. Ernesto Acuna E. has been actively filling the shoes of our late departed Trustee Bernardo Levit. In chairing the Fellowship Committee, he and his group have delineated several points to consider:

• Clarification of the present criteria for the selection of new Fellows

• Appropriate steps to discover dentists worthy of the honor of our Fellowship

• Providing assistance to our Section Chairs to enable them to reach a goal of five to 10 new Fellows annually

• Develop means and guidelines to retain our present Fellows and get them involved.

The concept of recruiting new Fellows and retaining them is the work of all Fellows from our top Officers down. Each of these activities is interdependent on the others to insure success.

A Traveler’s Travails

President-elect William Winspear began his long journey from Australia to attend the Management Team Committee Meeting in Anaheim, California. But because of his early arrival time, the Anaheim Hilton had no room prepared for him when he arrived. The exhausted Dr. Bill suggested moving a couple lobby couches together just so he could get some sleep from his wearisome trek. The Hilton suggested that they put a rollaway bed in an Executive Meeting Suite just off the main inner courtyard. These rooms are used for Hospitality Suites or businessmen’s meetings, so they are quite luxurious.
Dr. Winspear, too exhausted to argue, agreed to the arrangement. But once having seen the suite, and being one to make lemonade out of lemons, he hosted the Executive Board there for two nights of their meetings for a social cocktail party.

While this certainly was most hospitable of the good doctor, the events gave the Officers and their attending wives an opportunity to get together and exchange stories and ideas and get to know one another better. It also provided a chance for the Officers to interact one on one with each other to hammer out some meeting differences in a most cordial manner. The consequent Meetings went very smoothly in a friendly atmosphere created by those social interactions.

Central office relocated

Our Secretary General Richard Kozal and his wife, Judy Kozal, our Assistant Secretary, maintain the PFA Central Office, which has been located in the Community College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. At that site, and at the new dental school in UNLV, Dr. Kozal has established dental museums that have been of some note to the media and visiting public. With Dr. Kozal’s retirement from his teaching position at the Community College of Southern Nevada, their request to move the Central Office to Mesquite, Nevada, was approved by the Management Team Committee in Anaheim last May.

Mesquite is located 88.22 miles northeast of Las Vegas near the Nevada-Arizona border, just beneath the Utah State line. PFA will rent its own office space. But Museum Curator Richard will continue to maintain the dental museums in Las Vegas.

While the move is in progress, the Central Office will be shut down for a week, but contact through the e-mail addresses will continue to operate to carry on Academy business. The entire operation should be back up and running at top speed by the first of June. By the time you are reading this article, the Central Office should be fully operationable.

Make note of the new address

70th Awards Luncheon Banquet

Tuesday, 17 October, 2006
Las Vegas, Nevada

Four Seasons Hotel Ballroom 3 —11:30 am-2 pm

This year’s PFA Gold Medal recipient has been selected and approved by the Board to be presented to Dr. Rex Ingraham of Glendale, California, USC Professor-emeritus. Dr. Ingraham has led a long and distinguished career in our profession. Originally from Grand Junction, Colorado, he attended Mesa College and Western State College in Colorado, but then transferred to USC to complete his B.S. and D.D.S. degrees before the War. At USC, he became Instructor in Operative Dentistry during the War and rose through the ranks to become a USC Professor in Operative Dentistry in 1946, a Distinguished Professor in Restorative Dentistry in 1967, and Professor-emeritus in 1983.

Dr. Ingraham is on the staff of Presbyterian Hospital and Olmsted Memorial Hospital as well as Consultant for the Long Beach Veterans Hospital, while maintaining a private practice in Encino.

His list of awards is distinguished and notable, starting with his 1941 membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon, 1941 Medal of Recognition from the American Dental Club of Paris, and USC’s La Touche Award. He became an ACD Fellow in 1951 and an Honorary Alumnus of Northwestern University School of Dentistry in 1957. 1964 was a banner year for recognition with Le Chevalier au Grande Ordre du Vieux Moulin Neston of France, the Award of Outstanding Contributions to Dental Science from the St. Louis Dental Society, the Award of Merit from the Metropolitan Denver Dental Society, the Thomas Hinman Award, and ICD Fellowship. He received the USC General Alumni Award of Merit in 1975 and by the next year was inducted into the USC Hall of Fame.

In 1977, he was presented the Torch of Learning Award from Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The next year, he was awarded Honorary Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry. By 1979, PFA recognized him with their annual Honor Award from the Southern California Section. In 1980, Dr. Ingraham earned the Thomas B. Hinman Award (Georgia) and the Callahan Memorial Commission Award (Ohio).

He has also served on the California Board of Dental Examiners (1941) and on the Idaho Board of Examiners (1971)

In 1983, at age 69, he was honored with ADI International Dentist of the Year Award. Now in 2006 he will be receiving PFA’s highest award, the PFA Gold Medal.

Dr. Rex Ingraham’s list of school and professional activities covers pages of copy, as does his publications and lectures with presentations given internationally and across the United States. There have been few current dentists who have not been touched by Dr. Ingraham’s genius. We even used his Restorative Dentistry textbook at Loyola University in your Editor’s generation of dentists.

He and his wife Lucille have had two sons. They have been active in the Glendale Congregational Church, the YMCA and the Boy Scouts of America.

PFA’S DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

The Awards Committee and the PFA Board have ratified the selections to present the PFA Distinguished Service Award to past PFA Presidents H. Raymond Klein (1991-1992) and Carl G. Lundgren (1993-1994).

Dr. Raymond Klein of Jacksonville, Florida, earned his degrees of B.S., D.D.S., and Pedodontics from Indiana University. He practiced pediatric dentistry in Lafayette, Indiana, for a couple of years before moving to Jacksonville, Florida, in 1965. Besides all the usual memberships, he also is a Fellow in ACD, ICD, PFA, and active in FDI. He currently holds the position of Vice President in ACD.

This year, he has retired as Chairman of the PFA Hall of Fame Committee, which he served on for the last 10 years. His continued contribution to PFA and many dental organizations has been outstanding. Ray has served as President of the Florida Dental Health Foundation (1998-2001), Chairman of the FDHF Capitol Campaign Committee (1997-2001), President of the American Academy of Dentistry Foundation (1998-1999), 5th District Trustee for the ADA (1993-1997), President for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (1993-1994), PFA President, President of the Florida Dental Association (1990-1991), President of Florida Section for ACD (1986-1987), President for the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry (1985-1986), President of the Northeast Florida Dental Association (1983-1984), President of the Indiana University Pediatric Dentistry Alumni Association (1981-1982), President of the Jacksonville Dental Society (1979-1980), President for the Florida Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (1974-1976), President for the Florida Society of Dentistry for Children (1973-1974), and President for the Academy of Dentistry of Jacksonville (1972-1973). But to reach the level of Presidency in each and every organization, much work and dedication went into serving his profession. And what are not mentioned in his list of successes are the many offers he turned down, such as becoming a candidate for ADA President.

Adding to that outstanding career of professional service is the many-faceted side of Dr. Klein’s community service: lifetime Honorary Member for the Florida Sheriff’s Boy’s Ranch (1979), Florida

Dr. H. Raymond Klein

Governor Lawton Chiles State of Florida Proclamation for Outstanding Community Service (1993), and the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award of Rotary International (1982), to name a few. Add to that his service as Chairman of the St. Andrew’s Day School Board (2004), Vestry Member for the St. John Episcopal Church (1980-1984), President of the Arlington Rotary Club (1988), President for the Jacksonville Boy’s Home (1989), and staff member for the St. Vincent Hospital, the Hope Haven Hospital, the Baptists Hospital, and the University Hospital.

His professional honors and awards fill a couple of pages, with the most distinguished being the Leon Schwartz Lifetime Service Award (1997), the Distinguished Service Award (1985), the Dentist of the Year Award (1984), and the President’s Award (1991) from the Florida Dental Association, ACD’s Geis Fellow Award (2000), and Honorary Memberships in the Hinman Dental Society (1998), the Alabama Dental Association (1997), the Mississippi Dental Association (1997), and the Georgia Dental Association (1995).

Dr. Ray Klein married Renee, a hygienist graduate from Temple University, and somehow found the time to have three children.

What an outstanding career! What an outstanding man for all times and activities! What a lovely and understanding wife!

PFA’S DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

In alphabetical order only and not to be otherwise ranked, the other Distinguished Service Award is to be presented to Dr, Carl G. Lundgren of Rolling Hills Estates in California. Carl was born in Provo, Utah, but earned an undergraduate degree from Compton College (California), where he was Class President, Student Council President, and two-time Letterman. He then attended USC to receive his DDS degree, followed by a two-year term as Lt. (JG) in the USNR Dental Corps with service in Guam and San Diego.

Dr. Carl Lundgren

Upon returning to Los Angeles, Dr. Lundgren served as an Intern in the Los Angeles County General Hospital. Upon completion of his Internship, he opened a private practice in Hawthorne (California) until 1974, and then moved his practice to Lawndale (California) where he practiced until retiring in 2002.

Dr. Lundgren served as a USC Clinical Associate Professor in the Gnathology Department from 1971 to 1977.

He is a lifetime ADA Member from 1950 and has served as Alternate Delegate to the ADA House (1977). He has also served on many positions in the California Dental Association including their House of Delegates (1973-1980). Dr. Lundgren has served as President and as Editor for the Western Los Angeles Dental Society, and appeared on television on behalf of Dentistry for the 1977 Jerry Lewis Telethon and the1978 NBC Health Fair.

Dr. Lundgren has spent many years in the service of dental writing as Editor for the Western Dental Society (1979-1981); the Academy of General Dentistry earning the Best Newsletter Citation (1984), the Most Improved Newsletter Citation (1985), and the Best Editorial Awards in 1986 and 1987; Editor for the Southern California Academy of General Dentistry (1982-1987); ICD District 13 Editor (1983-1988). He won the Best Editorial Award for the California Dental Association and the 1980 Golden Stylus Award in 1980. That was the same year he attended Michigan State University and the California Dental Association Seminar for Editorial Writing, followed the next year with the ADA Editor’s Seminar. Dr. Lundgren has many articles published on dentistry in newspapers, the CDA Journal, the Western Los Angeles Dental Society Newsletter, and in the Southern California Academy of General Dentistry Newsletter.

Dr. Lundgren was a dental spokesman since 1976 for the Western Los Angeles Dental Society (1976-1980), which included speaking at over 12 service clubs; he was the 1977 CDA Faculty spokesman for the USC training program, and he lectured on dental delivery systems at the 1978 component general membership meeting. Dr. Lundgren followed that with a 1979 Mini-spokesman Course Training Session for the Western Dental Society, and was the Moderator leading an all-day workshop on dental insurance for the Western Dental Society

Dr. Carl Lundgren holds Fellowships in the AGD, ICD, ADI, ACD, and PFA. In these organizations, he earned the 1987 Master for AGD, was U.S. Section President for ICD in 2002 (as well as Regent, 1994-2000); he was PFA International President (1993-1994), and their Foundation President (2002-2005).

In his community, Dr. Carl is in the Kiwanis (Legion of Honor) for 45 years of membership and served as their 1957 President. He was the Founder and was Chairman for the Hawthorne Parade for 26 years (1953-1980). He served as President (1953) of the Hawthorne Toastmasters Club. He served on the Hawthorne YMCA Board of Governors (1951-1960) serving as their 1957 Chairman. He served on the Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce (1950-1988) and was their 1966-1967 President. He donated a quarter of a century to the Southwest Children’s Dental Clinic and five years to the Boy Scouts of America. He also was Publicity Chairman (1975-1980) for the Hawthorne Community Fair. Dr. Lundgren co-directed the Southern California Counties dental participation in the 1978 NBC Health Fair, which screened over 30,000 patients at 100 sites in 6 southern California Counties. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Friends of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium of San Pedro (California), which has been judged to be nation’s outstanding small aquarium by the American Zoo and Aquarium Society. This fits into his personal love for swimming (college letterman) and scuba diving.

Carl is married to an outstanding woman in Marge Lundgren with four married children and seven grandchildren. Marge can be seen even today helping out at many PFA functions. But many do not realize that Marge is a UCLA lifetime credentialed teacher of business office administration.

Carl and the Lundgren family can certainly be proud of their outstanding list of achievements. Carl leaves big footprints to follow.

The Awards Luncheon Banquet cost will be $45 (the same as last year), and the Sunday night dinner will remain at $75. Due to the hotel logistics of serving the meals, it is essential to reply with funds in the enclosed envelope. Tickets will be handled at the door (usually by Judy Kozal and Marge Lundgren).

INDIA SECTION CELEBRATES 20th ANNIVERSARY

L-R, Secretary/Treasurer T. Samraj, Chief Guest President of the Indian Dental Association Dr. Bhagwant Singh, Section Chair S. G. Damle, Dr. Major General Kartar Singh, Chief Editor V. P. Jalili with the Prize Winners of the India Section

L-R, India Section Secretary/Treasurer T. Samraj, Chief Guest Dr. Bhagwant Singh President of the Indian Dental Association, Section Chair S. G. Damle, International Honorary Fellow Dr. Major General Kartar Singh, Chief Editor V. P. Jalili, and new Fellow Nikil Vashi offering Prayer

The PFA Section In India and their outstanding Journal of the PFA India Section are both celebrating their 20th Anniversary all this year. Though the India Section is actually older than 20 years, it needed to be rebuilt after a severe decline in 1987. But Chief Editor V. P. Jalili has produced an outstanding publication for the Fellows in India that has successively been produced for 20 uninterrupted years, with Dr. V. P. Jalili as its Chief Editor since April of 1987.

This year’s first issue was distributed at a special function held at the All-India Institute of Medical Science in New Delhi by Professor N. K. Gangoli, the Director General of Medical Research. Dr. Anil Kohli, President of the Dental Council of India, presided over the April function.

Such functions will continue until the end of this year, concluding with their fourth and last issue of their Journal for the year in December, 2006, at their Annual Convocation of the Section.

PFA President Howard Mark congratulated India PFA Editor Dr. V. P. Jalili and their Secretary T. Samraj for their dedication and service to our profession for these two decades.

Dr. Mark, speaking for the entire PFA Board and our Fellowship, noted that this was a special occasion for both entities, and for the Academy in particular, as this reflects the vitality of the India Section and its ongoing commitment to educational excellence—may it continue to grow in stature and numbers for many years to come!

"The example of the India Section is a story we hope can be emulated across the world by other Sections and Regions as a way for the Academy to expand its message of leadership in, and service to, the profession of dentistry from a global perspective. Service to others less advantaged has been the hallmark of the Academy since its inception in 1936. And this mission has been well supported by the PFA Foundation through its Grants Program. Leadership has likewise been stressed because those in this position greatly influence the directions and activities of their respective organizations. These attributes are commensurate with Fellowship nomination and selection, as we seek the best in dentistry for induction as Fellows. We are proud of the Academy and the influence it is having on world dentistry!

"When the Academy was founded, one of the forces that led to this was an antipathy toward the type of dental literature then extant. This was purely proprietary in nature, with few exceptions, and had little or no basis in research or scientific principles. Dr. Elmer Best and the original cadre of founding members railed against these deceptive practices, and they felt the need to form an organization dedicated to fostering change in such literature. We have seen the principled results of this activity with the proliferation of peer-reviewed dental literature, with sound scientific bases, and the more rigid application of credible principles.

"The Journal of the PFA India Section edited by Dr. V. P. Jalili and his co-editors, typifies one of these enlightened and substantive publications. Dr. Jalili, who has been the Chief Editor for the full 20 years of the Journal’s existence, and his staff, are to be commended and applauded as the Journal celebrates its 20 years! As a long-time editor myself, I can empathize with the effort it takes to put forth each and every issue. But I also am aware that the rewards are worth it! This is indeed a milestone to be savored and appreciated at all levels of the profession because of the scope of material presented and the prestige it provides for the Fellowship of the India Section. May it long endure!

"On another level, the Academy is proud to inform all readers about its Web site. As a means of international communication, enabling all of the Fellowship to be in contact with colleagues in other parts of the world, it is the tool of the future and will be well utilized by the Board of Trustees of the Academy. Please use this as well! We have also truly become international with the impending installation of the first President outside of the United States and Canada—Dr. William Winspear of Australia, in October in Las Vegas, Nevada! Hopefully, one of your Fellows will be able to attend this momentous event!

"Again, we salute all of India, all of the Fellows, and both the Journal and the Section, on the wonderful 20th anniversaries you are celebrating this year. May your Annual Convocation in December be successful in every way!"

Sincerely,
from President Howard I. Mark
and Secretary-General Richard A. Kozal.

From the Desk of Foundation President M.David Campbell…

The grant applications are now complete for this year. The deadline is 1 June every year. Now come the difficult decisions! Our Executive Director, Dr. Fred Halik, screens and evaluates all the applications. The suitable applications are then passed on to Gary Lowder and his Grants Committee. The grants are evaluated by six committee members. The entire Foundation Board then must decide which of the deserving applications will be selected for funding.

You can see from this description of the process that we are as thorough as possible in making the choices. There are so many people in need in this world and I, for one, am proud of what this Foundation contributes to the health of so many people that would not be cared for without our help.

The Foundation is dependent upon you for your help and caring for those in need and also for your donations of both time and money. The Board appreciates your generosity in donating money now and remembering the Foundation in your will.

I feel truly blessed to have the caliber of people on the Foundation and the Academy Boards. We work well together to successfully provide dentistry to the needy. Our PFA Sections around the world continue to prove we are a caring organization.

It is astonishing how many people only gain empathy for another person’s situation when we experience for ourselves what others must endure. It is only then that some of us are able to actually be of help. Some people, though, are able to simply jump in and help. They do not stand at a distance and think, “Oh, that must be difficult.” They do not judge others who are in difficult circumstances. They just go out and help.

When we reach out together, as a profession, to those in need, both the donor and the recipient are better for it.

Thank you for strengthening our world.

Drs. William Lundergan and Lisa Harpenau with their Award

Fellow Lawrence M. LeVine of San Rafael was named Vice Chairman of the Northern California Section for the ACD. He is a PFA Fellow and a 1962 graduate of the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry.

Drs. William Lundergan and Lisa Harpenau of the Art Dugoni School of Dentistry, and officers of the American Dental Education Association’s Section of Periodontics, received the Thomas P. Nowlin Best Performance by a Section Award from the ADEA during its 83rd annual session in Orlando. Fellow, and UOP Professor of Periodontics, William Lundergan is also a Consultant to the California State Board of Dental Examiners and to the Veterans Administration Dental Clinics in Palo Alto and in Martinez, California. He earned his Certificate in Periodontics from the University of Connecticut in 1983 and is a Fellow in PFA and ACD.

Dean Arthur A. Dugoni

The UOP Art Dugoni School of Dentistry Alumni Association presented their Dean Arthur A. Dugoni with their Inaugural Award named in his honor at their 107th Annual Meeting at San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel with some 800 guests and dignitaries in attendance. The Arthur A. Dugoni Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals for their exceptional achievement, commitment, and service to the dental school and to the profession. No one is more deserving of this tribute than Dr. Dugoni who has served our profession internationally for a half-century. His achievements are too numerous to mention here, perhaps in a large book, but currently he serves as on the ADA as President of the American Dental Association Foundation and as a past President of the ADA and of the California Dental Association.

California, Southern Section

L-R, Trustee Charles Eller, California Editor William Mihram, and new Chair Douglas Cassat

Retiring Chair Charles Eller hosted their huge PFA Luncheon in Anaheim during the California Dental Association’s annual Spring Scientific Session. He introduced the new incoming Chair Dr. D. Douglas Cassat.

During that Awards Luncheon, your Editor got to meet with the California, Southern Section Editor William Mihram, who regularly produces one of the best Section newsletters in the world called PerSpecTive. Bill’s production of this very informative publication for his Section’s Fellows serves as an excellent example of what can be done in keeping the Fellowship informed. Just look at the southern California record! Their number of past Presidents, their number of grants, their number of activities is no coincidence. Their newsletter keeps them informed.
Fellow Lloyd Baum attended the PFA annual Luncheon last April. Dr. Baum’s life work was honored by Montemorelos University on their 62nd Anniversary by the Faculty of Health Sciences for his life’s work in the development of dental services at their University by naming their dental school after him.

Connecticut

Section Chair William A. MacDonald gave his Section Report for the year. Two Distinguished Service Awards were presented to former Section Chair Robert Friedman of Fairfield (past President of the Connecticut State Dental Association) and to Dr. Salvatore Squatrito of Manchester, also a past President of CSDA. The Section worked with Dr. Margaret Smith, the Director of the Generations Family Dental Center in Willimantic and the northeast area of Connecticut, to obtain a Foundation grant for their operation. An anonymous $5000 gift from a PFA Fellow was also presented to Dr. Smith to assist in her work in the “Quiet Corner” of Connecticut.

Their annual Meeting was held in conjunction with the Connecticut State Dental Association to induct eleven new Fellows into the Academy. International President Howard Mark and International Trustee Richard Walsh of Rhode Island were in attendance to assist in conducting the ceremony.

Their 2006 Distinguished Service Award was presented to the retiring CSDA Executive Director Noel Bishop to honor him for his 17 years of dedicated service. ICD Regent, and former PFA Rhode Island Chair, Christine Benoit was in attendance with the ICD Deputy Regent for Connecticut, PFA Fellow, Howard Bailit.

Dr. MacDonald will be stepping down as Connecticut Section Chair in October and Dr. Robin Mark Santiago of West Hartford will fill the position of Section Chair. Dr. Santiago is a Fellow in PFA, ACD, and ICD. She is a Clinical Associate Professor at University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine and serves on their Mentorship Program. She is a Pankey Institute Associate and co-Founder of the Southern New England Pankey Study Club.

Our President Howard Mark has been honored by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons with their prestigious Community Service Award. “To say that I am thrilled at being selected to receive this important award from one’s peers is putting it mildly!” Dr. Mark noted. “But this is certainly not mine alone. Without the support of many people, as dedicated as I am, to the cause of good oral and dental health care, this would never have come about.”

President Howard Mark with new Section Chair Dr. Robin Santiago

Illinois

Fellow Fred Margolis of Buffalo Grove was presented with the Distinguished Member Award from the Illinois State Dental Society, their highest award, at their annual session in Itasca. This award pays special tribute to a member in recognition of significant humanitarian services to mankind and to the profession. Dr. Margolis certainly fits this tribute in his dedication to the profession in providing dental care to children, not only in his private practice, but also serving as Chairman for over 10 years for the Illinois Special Olympics Special Smiles, and as a past President of the Illinois Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped. Dr. Margolis is a clinical instructor at Loyola University’s Oral Health Center and has lectured for over a quarter of a century. He is a nationally recognized speaker on pediatric dentistry, laser dentistry, and dentistry for the disabled patient. He has been the staff dentist for Glenkirk Campus for the developmentally disabled children for the last 14 years, and has also served as staff dentist for the Center on Deafness. Your Editor visited his pediatric office in Buffalo Grove and was given several demonstrations on the effectiveness of using dental laser technology on children. A warmer, more generous professional could not be found worthier than Dr. Fred Margolis.

Dr. Joel Glover spoke on the evolution of the new dental school at UNLV, particularly as there are many similarities to the same beginning efforts in Utah. Dr. Gary Lowder gave a video presentation of a Foundation grant project in Mexico to urge more Fellows to seek such opportunities for service, and to apply for Foundation grants to implement such projects.

Dr. Lowder and Chair Richard Petty discussed the Foundation scholarship programs and grant opportunities for the Utah Section.
