5. September - October

My Last President’s Message!

To paraphrase a famous line, “Old PFA Presidents never die, they move on to the Foundation!” As I look back on that wonderful and thrilling inauguration day in October 2005, recalling the words of my daughter, Fellow Robin Santiago, as she installed me into my new office, the year has literally gone by in a flash, a twinkle of an eye, with the speed of light! I have been involved in organized dentistry in many capacities over 50 years, right from the beginning of my practice as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, but this year as your President, as the spokesperson for the Academy, truly stands out as one of the high points of my career. The camaraderie my wife and I have experienced, the immediate acceptance wherever we have traveled to represent you, and the friendships we have formed along the way, are worth much more than we can say--except THANK YOU!

When I was first inducted as a Fellow of the Academy, way back in 1974 (yes, I am that old!), I was honored and thrilled to be even considered by what I felt was a very prestigious organization by all measures--and I still do! What I did not realize as much then, and now have grown to really appreciate, was that being a Fellow carries with it clear obligations to not violate the trust that was being bestowed, to be one of the best professionals I could be through service to others, through leadership, and, most of all, through commitment to the goals and aims of the Academy. These ideals have not changed; they are as clearly spelled out today as they were those many years ago, but the organization has grown and has changed for other reasons as well.

The Academy has more genuinely dedicated itself to service, has expanded its horizons of leadership, and has encouraged newly minted inductees to be true to both ethical behavior and excellence in practice. Some of these are due, in large part, to the beneficence of a Costa Rican dentist, Dr. Brenes-Espinach, through his generous monetary gift to the Foundation; some are due to the establishment of the subsequent grants and scholarship programs;

and some are due to internal alterations that have thrust the Academy even more into the forefront of International Dentistry. And there is still room for further change, i.e., expansion of a well-recognized Web site, and increased involvement in affiliated regions of the world.

This is a time of challenge for organized dentistry everywhere, and PFA is no exception. Commitment and involvement on committees, attendance at meetings, participation in projects and service activities--all have suffered a downward trend over the past decade and more. An International Fellowship reflects all this in a global context, which certainly does not make it any easier. How does such a group find common ground among its Fellowship; develop cohesive interests; obtain better understanding of the uniqueness of each region?

If I could wave a magic wand, make it happen, I would want Trustees and Section Chairs in each region to come together and discuss what they could do, as agents of change and collegiality, to bring their respective areas closer. Finding it most worthwhile to foster collaboration, to work together on humanitarian projects that could improve oral health conditions, and recognize the capabilities of the Fellowship in general, these are among the first steps in this context and must be encouraged by the leadership of the Academy. How can we call ourselves a premier international honor dental Fellowship if we do not live up to the maxims of the Academy which we supposedly promulgate and support? PFA can only grow if the selection and induction of new Fellows is made with this in mind as an imperative.

So, now it is time for me to step down from my bully pulpit, to let the new President, Dr. William Winspear of Australia, put his imprimatur on the PFA ship of state, and for me to let go the reins of power and prestige. As I stated in the beginning, it has been one h--- of a year, and I will be forever grateful that you gave me and my dear wife, Sheila, the most wonderful opportunity to serve you as your President.

THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! THANK YOU !

Howard I. Mark, DMD

PFA MOURNS PASSING OF MARTIN NAIMARK

Dr. Martin Naimark, past PFA President (1992-1993), passed to his reward on 23 July 2006. All our sympathies to his family, though we know that such a generous, giving individual is enjoying his eternal peace and benefits of a life well spent in the behalf of service to his fellow man.

Marty and Wilma Naimark with past President George Higue

Past PFA President (1993-1994) and immediate past Foundation President Carl Lundgren noted that Marty and he were closely involved with the reshaping of the Academy on a number of issues. "Marty was a brilliant performer and never hesitated to be right there helping to make decisions. He was easy to get along with and a fine gentleman. I will miss seeing him."

Past PFA President Gary Lowder (2002-2003) remembers Dr. Naimark as a kind and gentle man with clear purpose and vision for the PFA. “There is a special empty spot in my heart as I ponder the lives of great and kindly men like Marty. That spot is and ever will be filled with the memories of their goodness.”

Past PFA President (1994-1995) Michael Cripton’s wife Nancy remarked how sad it was to read about the passing of Dr. Marty Naimark. He was a nice and gentle man certainly dedicated to PFA.

The funeral service was held on Sunday, 30 July 2006 at the Ira Kaufman Chapel in Southfield, Michigan.

The family of Dr. Naimark has asked that those making a Memorial Gift in his name do so to one of his three loves in life: (1) the PFA Foundation c/o Dr. Fred Halik, 30 Spruce Ridge, Fairport, NY 14540-4278; (2) Alpha Omega Professional Dental Fraternity; or (3) The Detroit District Dental Society.

70TH AWARDS LUNCHEON BANQUET

Tuesday, 17 October 2006, 11:30 am--2:00 pm

Four Seasons Hotel Ballroom #3

The PFA Annual Awards Banquet will be held on Tuesday this year because of the shifting of the ADA Meeting to the beginning of the week. At that time, the PFA officers will present special awards to those highly respected and nominated individuals, honoring them for their dedication and commitment to our profession. The Awards designated for this year are:

Dr. Rex Ingraham

The highest PFA Award presented in the United States is the PFA Gold Medal. This year, the Medal will be presented to Dr. Rex Ingraham of Glendale, California.

PFA’s Distinguished Service Awards will be presented to past PFA President and retiring Hall of Fame Chairman Dr. H. Raymond Klein and to past PFA President and immediate past Foundation President Dr. Carl Lundgren.

PFA’s Dental Trade & Industry Award is presented to honor an outstanding leader in the dental industry for contributions to dentistry. Only one plaque per annum is awarded upon recommendation of the Awards Committee and with the approval of the Academy Board. This year’s award will be presented to Dentsply Corporation of Canada, with their Vice President of Professional Relations George R. Rhodes accepting on their behalf.

Dentsply Corporation implemented a Student Clinician Program, which provides an opportunity for dental students to participate in a national clinical research competition.

Dentsply’s George R. Rhodes

This is managed by the Canadian Dental Association, sponsored by Dentsply International, and held in conjunction with CDA’s annual conference. Its purpose is to stimulate ideas, improve communication, and increase student involvement in the advancement of the dental profession. This program is now offered in 35 countries on six continents. Student participants are selected by the Deans and dental faculties of accredited dental schools. Most of the students’ expenses are underwritten by Dentsply.

George Rhodes is responsible for the management and direction of Dentsply’s varied professional relations activities internationally. He joined Dentsply in 1973. In 1977, he was promoted to Manager of the Corporate Public Relations Department. His responsibilities increased over the years, and he was promoted to his present position in 1992. George Rhodes earned his undergraduate degree in English from York College of Pennsylvania and a Masters Degree in Public Relations from The American University.

Following those important presentations will be the Installation of Officers for the 2006-2007 year. Immediate past President will be Dr. Howard Mark of Connecticut. PFA International President will be Dr. William Winspear of Australia. President-elect will be Dr. James A. Englander of Wisconsin. Dr. Charles Eller of California will be installed as PFA Vice President. PFA International Trustees installed will be Drs. Karyn Stockwell of Georgia, Joe Harris of Michigan, and Daniel Castagna of California.

Chair Karyn Stockwell reports holding their 4th Annual PFA Leadership Conference and Convocation last February at the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Georgia. The Conference kicked off with participation in the ADA’s “Give Kids a Smile” project using four mobile dental vans at two elementary schools. The vans were donated by Dr. Mark Shurett. Twelve Fellows plus the Georgia Scholarship recipient, Dr. Amber Lawson, provided dental treatment ranging from prophylaxis and sealants to stainless steel crowns and extractions--treatment valued at $23,800 to serve kids who would otherwise have gone untreated. PFA International President Howard Mark was present to encourage everyone in this outstanding project.

Fellow Shirley Fisher, assisted by her husband
Robert Fisher, provided treatment

That Friday evening, Fellow Robin Reich hosted a dinner buffet and wine tasting at her home to socialize and get to know one another, as well as meet their new inductees, their PFA Trustee Robert Hart of Florida, and PFA International President Howard Mark of Connecticut.

The afternoon offered a skeet-shooting tournament, as February in Georgia is not always conducive for golf.

Formal attire was the dress for the evening Gala Awards and Induction Dinner. The ceremonies were presided over by PFA President Howard Mark, International Trustee Robert Hart, and Section Chair Karyn Stockwell, with some 85 Fellows and guests in attendance. Fourteen new Fellows were inducted into the Academy.

The new members were Drs. Becky Bays Carlon, Brian Carpenter, H. Byron Colley III, Hugh Flax, Daniel Hodges, Kenneth Hutchinson, Anthony Joyce, Dave Lee, Stuart Loos, Jane Martone, Alston McCaslin VI, Peter Shatz, Charles Smaha, and David Zelby.

Dr. Lee Hawkins was presented the Georgia Section’s PFA Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding contributions to dentistry as a clinician, as a leader on the local, State, and national levels, for his service to his community, and as a past PFA Section Chair.

Dr. Gary Holmes, assistant Professor of Oral Rehabilitation at the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry, received the Georgia Section’s Second Excellence in Dental Education Award. This award recognizes clinical excellence and encourages junior faculty to stay in academic dentistry. The award was originated by Fellow Frank Caughman.

Also honored at this event was Dr. Mark Shurett for his continued generosity over the past four years in supplying the mobile dental vans, personnel, and supplies for the “Give Kids a Smile” project.

The Foundation Scholarship recipient Dr. Amber Lawson was applauded for her attendance and participation in their program. The new member sponsors were also recognized.

Georgia Dental Association President Fellow Richard Weinman gave greetings with Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry Dean Fellow Connie Drisko giving a talk.

The Saturday evening events were brought to a conclusion with entertainment by a barbershop quartet of Fellows and the magical illusions of Bill Clary.

Sunday morning wrapped up the conference with a Breakfast Business Meeting. President Mark addressed the group on the state of the Academy and the Foundation. Plans for the year 2007 were discussed, committees designated, and the new Georgia PFA letterhead logos were unveiled.

New Georgia Fellows

From the Desk of Foundation President M. David Campbell

Dear Friends,

This month I will use this bimonthly column to share some sad news with you--the death of PFA Past President Marty Naimark on 23 July 2006. He graduated from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1938. He was a committed husband, father, friend, and, of course, a continuing supporter of the dental profession. He was the consummate professional. He will be missed.

It is no surprise that we use words like conscientious, gentle, supportive, active, wise, kind, warm, and encouraging when we describe Marty. These qualities certainly manifest themselves in his work as President of the Detroit District Dental Society (1970), and his involvement in the Michigan Dental Association, where he served as Trustee and as Vice President. Due to his exemplary service, he was honored with the Michigan Dental Association Meritorious Award and the MDA Dental Citizen of the Year Award. These honors, which were among many, included being a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Marty first served the PFA as Chairman of the Michigan Section and as President of PFA in 1992-1993. During his Presidential Year, he founded a PFA Section at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, which was a great source of pride for him. His international contributions to PFA were extensive and created international good will. He continued to serve the organization as a Trustee on the Foundation Board for several years until his health required him sadly to resign.

Throughout his work in various dental organizations, Marty made his opinion known without being aggressive; he wanted to lead but not take over, which can be a rare quality as a leader.

Marty Naimark with Foundation Executive
Director Fred Halik

As his practice grew, so did his contributions to PFA, to his fraternity Alpha Omega, to the Scholarship Committee of the Jewish Vocational Service, and as a mentor to dental students while he taught at the University of Detroit School of Dentistry. He received Alpha Omega’s Meritorious Award for his service and dedication.

The sage advice that he offered to colleagues and students will also be sorely missed by his extended family, which most recently included six grandchildren and four great grandchildren, upon whom he doted.

Marty and his wife Wilma were a unique couple. They shared that special something that was clear in their evident love for each other. Wilma and their daughters, Ronna and Jill, and their families were with him until the end, supporting him as they had supported him throughout his life, and he supported them.

We give thanks for Marty--for his life, for his commitment, for his dedication to his profession, and for his family and friends. Marty Naimark’s life was a role model for us all.

I was honored to have worked with him on many projects. Those of us who had the privilege of working with Marty will always remember him as a wise and kind individual. It was he who brought me into the Pierre Fauchard Academy, which opened new chapters for my life. I am most grateful for his guidance and his friendship.

Marty, we all will miss you. God bless.

The Executive Director Reports

by Dr. Fred Halik

Dr. Fred Halik

The Executive Director’s Office has been buzzing with activity since the Chicago April Meeting. The Interim Meeting Minutes were compiled and distributed.

All but 15 U.S. schools responded to the participation invitation letter sent from the Academy’s Secretary General Richard Kozal last February. My follow-up letter to those recalcitrants in May lowered that to five. The usual assortment of excuses such as “personnel changes,” “we never saw the letter,” etc., were collected.

So, the only schools that have ignored every attempt to contact them are Boston, Colorado, Florida, Minnesota, and Nova Southeastern. Maybe someday they will wake up and smell the bacon cooking.

As expected, grant applications have flooded in suddenly, numbering over 30, with the most coming in the last few days of May. This is considerably a smaller number than in 2005. But so far, my review has revealed none that can be immediately rejected on technical grounds. My feeling is that my recasting of the application and C. V. documents, and creating a more user-friendly page of directions has made it easier for applicants to comply and therefore not to be rejected out of hand.

Although I had sent about 20 hard-copy applications out to various entities around the world, most applications seem to have been downloaded from the Web site, and completely filled out properly.

Everyone needs to have completed registration, room, and transportation arrangements for Las Vegas by now. The deadline for report submissions to be included in the agenda book is Monday, 11 September. Do not be late!

Iowa

The James Brophy Sr. Memorial Scholarship was presented, through the Foundation, to the University of Iowa College of Dentistry student Lindsay Compton for her leadership and scholarship roles at her dental school by Associate Dean Yvonne Chalkley.

This is the first Memorial Scholarship presented under the new Foundation Fund-Raising guidelines where an individual may donate a sum designated for a dental scholarship. Either half the sum contributed is placed in the Foundation’s principle and the other half given as a separate PFA Scholarship; or the entire amount may be donated to the student in place of the Foundation’s designated amount for that school. Any person may contribute funds for a specific dental school and name their scholarship in memoriam of a mentor, relative, etc

Past President Michael Cripton (1994-1995) was the first PFA International President not to reside in the United States. His service opened up the Academy to becoming a truly international organization. Dr. Cripton continued to serve PFA after his Presidency and lead the way on many issues. Michael’s style was to allow debate on an issue to rage back and forth until he would quietly offer a resolution to the matter and the debate was over in accepting his solution. His gentle, quiet manner was well known for putting to rest fiery issues. He served on the Board of Trustees for the PFA Foundation until his untimely illness. His dear wife, Nancy, has informed the Academy that Mike has now moved to a Special Care Home last June. That had been a difficult decision for Nancy to make, but the time had come. The Special Care Home is like a very large bungalow-style residence. “Mike seems very content there,” relates Nancy Cripton, “And he receives excellent care. He is still the caring, gentle person he always was and has never become aggressive like so many people afflicted with dementia do out of frustration. This has been a dreadful disease, but we are taking it one day at a time.”

Past PFA President Kevin Roach, the second international PFA President from Canada, added, “Mike was an interesting President to say the least, and he opened the door to other ‘colonials’ such as myself and incoming President William Winspear of Australia. His quiet manner and sage advice will be sorely missed at our Board Table.”

International Trustee for Canada Barry Dolman was offering some Quebec cultural asides in a recent e-mail that were unbelievably interesting, and should be noted for future reference by anyone traveling between Canada’s Quebec and their country. Dated July, Barry writes, “Sorry for the delay as it is the official vacation period here in Quebec, and I have been away from my desk. There are a few unique social features we have in this province-–other than language (French). One is that all apartment rental contracts end on July 1st. So it is considered the official ‘moving day’ for everyone. Try to imagine everyone moving the same day, with people leaving apartments, and people moving in to apartments, clogging the street with moving truck and trailers--all on the same day! The other is the vacation period established by decree. A number of years ago, all the construction unions established by law that they would all close at the same time-–the last two full weeks of July-–in order for families and friends to have the same time off. Of course, that snowballed into a situation where it became more and more convenient for everyone to vacation together… thus no patients, no reason to keep your dental office open.”

Dr. Marc Geissberger, Associate Professor at UOP’s Art Dugoni School of Dentistry, was named President of Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Honor Society Supreme Chapter for 2006-2007. OKU Supreme Chapter serves as the governing body for its 57 component chapters throughout the country. Established in 1914, OKU honors dental students who have distinguished themselves with a high level of scholarship, as well as exemplary traits of character. Dr. Geissberger is currently Treasurer of the Art Dugoni School of Dentistry Alumni Association, a PFA Fellow, and member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s University Council.

Dean Art Dugoni was approved by UOP’s Board of Regents to receive their highest award, the Order of the Pacific, which he accepted last June at the dental school graduation ceremonies. Pacific’s Alumni Association honored Dean Dugoni at their 48th annual Distinguished Alumni Awards banquet with their Medallion of Excellence, which has only been awarded to seven individuals in the school’s history.

Dr. Art Dugoni is the first dentist to receive an honorary degree from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry last May, which was a busy month for him. Dr. Dugoni was the featured speaker at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and at the Indiana University School of Dentistry commencement ceremonies.

Michigan
Our President Howard Mark had his letter to the Editor of the Michigan Dental Journal printed, pointing out that the recommended dental goals of MDA are those that PFA espouses as well. He also extended congratulations on MDA’s 150th Anniversary.

New York
Section Chair Lynne Halik hosted their annual Section Meeting last June in Cooperstown to induct new Fellows into the Academy and present their Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Mark Feldman, the incoming President-Elect of the ADA. Foundation Executive Director Fred Halik addressed the group on the Foundation’s activities.

Georgia
Last March, the Georgia Section hosted the annual ACD, ICD, and PFA joint Breakfast Meeting held in conjunction with Hinman Dental Meeting. The Georgia Dental Association President Fellow Richard Weinman was the keynote speaker. Forty PFA Fellows were in attendance.

Last July, the PFA Fellows gathered with ACD and ICD for another joint Breakfast Meeting during the Georgia Dental Association’s Annual Meeting at Amelia Island Plantation.

PFA Fellows Brian Carpenter, A. Drew Ferguson IV, and Kent Percy received Honorable Fellowship Awards from the Georgia Dental Association at their annual Awards breakfast. This award is for members who have rendered more than usual service to the Georgia Dental Association, have been members for ten continuous years, and are recommended by other GDA members for such an award.

PFA Fellow John Feihaut received the GDA’s Award of Merit at their annual Meeting. This is the highest honor that the association can bestow upon a member and is only given to a candidate who has truly exhibited service and merit above recognized standards. This award is not necessarily presented every year.

Fellow Jonathan Dubin received one of five Healthcare Georgia Foundation 2006 Community Service Awards. The award recognizes individuals for their dedication and commitment to improving health and health care across Georgia. Dr. Dubin received an engraved crystal award and the Foundation presented $1000 check to the charity of his choice. Dr. Dubin has volunteered for the past six years for Special Olympics Special Smiles, an oral health-screening program that is offered to all athletes that attend the Special Olympics Georgia State Summer Games. He organizes the event each year, recruits volunteers, and solicits donations. His $1000 award went to Special Olympics Special Smiles.

Fellow I. Leon Aronson of Savannah has become the 72nd President of the International College of Dentists, USA Section. Dr. Aronson received his dental degree from Emory University in 1963 and served in the US Air Force. He then earned his Master’s Degree in Orthodontics from St. Louis University in 1967 and has practiced as an orthodontist in Savannah for 33 years until retiring in 2000. Dr. Aronson is past President of the Georgia Dental Association, the Georgia Association of Orthodontists, and of the Southeastern District Dental Society. He is a Georgia Dental Association Award of Merit honoree and a GDA Honorable Fellow.

Wisconsin
Dr. Ronald P. Stifter of Saukville has been recommended to replace the retiring Section Chair Glenn Maihofer. Dr. Maihofer has done a splendid job as Wisconsin’s Section leader, but he needs some time for his family. Dr. Ronald Stifter is an excellent choice to assume Glenn’s role. Dr. Stifter has served on the faculty of Marquette University School of Dentistry in Milwaukee since 1970. So he knows a great many dentists in the State. He served as WDA’s President in 1992-1993. He is currently serving as ACD’s Section Chair and is an ICD Fellow as well.
