A FOUNDATION-SUPPORTED PROJECT…

MEND

Since 1971, “Meet Each Need with Dignity” (MEND) has provided services that meet the basic human needs of the indigent population in the northeast San Fernando Valley area. These services include food, clothing distribution, English as a second language classes, job training, computer courses, job placement, medical care, and dental treatment. The MEND Dental Clinic was established in 1990, and currently consists of three semi-private operatories staffed entirely by volunteer dental professionals. These is only one part-time paid staff member who manages the clinic, schedules patient appointments, coordinates the dental volunteers, and directs a dental assisting program.

MEND is the only free dental clinic in the entire San Fernando Valley. Each patient, though, is requested to make a nominal donation in keeping with MEND’s philosophy of safeguarding the dignity of all recipients. But no patient is ever denied treatment because they are unable to make an offering.

The volunteer dentists provide oral diagnosis, prevention treatment, oral surgery, nonsurgical periodontal treatment, endodontic treatment, and patient education to all ages of patients. The volunteer dental hygienists provide the preventative, nonsurgical perio, and patient education.

A majority of the volunteer dental assistants are current and former clients of MEND who are receiving on-the-job training and experience. Many are now working in private dental offices.

The dental needs of MEND’s patients result from lack of treatment and/or dental education. MEND does not provide a complete range of dental services, such as fixed or removable prostheses. The goal is to restore patients’ mouths to a healthy state to enable them to maintain that healthy condition by proper home care, regularly keeping their scheduled preventative dental appointments, and proper nutrition.

Last year, 565 patients were treated, including 238 new patients.

MEND also hosts a “Teeth to Toes” Program over the last three years. This program’s local elementary school students receive new shoes, a new toothbrush, toothpaste, oral hygiene instructions, topical fluoride applications, and a dental exam. New pediatric patients have been attracted to the clinic through the time contributions of two professional basketball players.

The Foundation grant was obtained through the diligence of Dr. David M. Campbell of Pacoima.

A FOUNDATION-SUPPORTED PROJECT…

St. Vincent de Paul Village Dental

Through a Foundation grant instituted by Dr. Michael J. Ward of San Diego, the St. Vincent de Paul Village Clinic was able to expand its ability to treat patients endodontically and save teeth that otherwise would have been lost.

The Clinic treats patients who are homeless without the ability to pay for their care, or have any State or private insurance available to them. Without the Foundation’s funding, many would be forced to receive only emergency or palliative care instead of the more comprehensive dental treatment currently available.

A FOUNDATION-SUPPORTED PROJECT…

St. Leo’s Dental Clinic: Dental Care for Marginalized Children

The entire idea started in 1995 with retired Encinitas dentist Bob Bobbitt and a spare room in St. James Parish Hall. Gradually, with donated equipment, Dr. Bobbitt and his cast of volunteers had grown to a three-chair clinic and “more patients than he knew what to do with.” He began providing dental care to uninsured children. But a few tears later, St. James decided to expand their Parish Hall, and the clinic went into storage.

St. Leo’s Mission, a medical clinic, offered a plot of adjacent vacant land. Dr. Roger Kingston, a local oral surgeon, came forth and raised funds and volunteers from the Del Mar Rotary Club to build a new facility from scratch. Besides the Rotarians, help came from church members, the local dental society, and community volunteers. Soon a new four-chair dental clinic and a compact lab filled the entire 600 square feet by 2000.

St. Leo’s Dental Clinic in Solana Beach, San Diego North County, California, was founded to serve the needy in that area. First, two volunteer dentists helped the children, mostly Latinos from the San Dieguito area, on Saturday mornings. The Children’s Clinic started to include orthodontics by two volunteer professionals.

The Foundation grant helped to equip a fourth dental operatory in 2002 as the need grew. The oral hygiene program was forced outside under the covered porch to accommodate the expansion.

Then on Wednesdays, the clinic added the “Welcome Home Ministries Dental Program” for women and men recently released from prison. The Night Clinic began to include those living in the local homeless shelters, and the clinic started to accept “walk-in” emergencies.

The Children’s Program included 45 Saturdays handling 603 appointments during the term of our grant. Our grant was supplemented by donations collected of $5554 and by 36 volunteers. The dentists volunteering their time were Drs. Beverly Martinson, Robert Bobbitt, Oscar Rivera, John Griffing, Chris Catalano, Ray Kieffer, Parisa Rahmanian, Roger Kingston, Greg Taylor, Dave Urich, Bob Rosenfeld, Thomas Goblirsch, Josefina Lopez, Bertha Solorio, Holly Oberholzer, and Jim Snow.

The Wednesday Program was open 46 days, serving 212 appointments for the recently released from prison, 24 homeless, and 83 emergencies for a total of 319 appointments collecting $599, plus the additional volunteer dentists Drs. John Grimm, Mary Lim, and C. Tran. The volunteer Dental Hygienists were Jan Kleveland and Annaliese Carlsmith. The volunteer Dental Assistants were Grace Beckham, Consuelo Guerrero, Anke Beyer-Jordan, Gregory Shaw, Alicia Garcia, Anakarina Rojas, Anyelid Rojas, Jessica Wilhelm, Ana Contreras, and Leticia Salinas. The volunteer receptionists were Frances Beckers, Marti Kaye, Sue Rodenberger, Pedro Enriquez, Armida Gonzalez, Vilma Salini, Marylynne McCullough, and Eva Christensen. The volunteer Dental Health Educators were Sue Bobbitt and Katie Kingston. The volunteer Translator was Virginia Vogel.

The clinic asks for a $10 donation for operating expenses. Dr. Bobbitt believes that the fee adds a perceived value to the provided care and gives the patients a sense of pride. Other contributions come from local service clubs and other individuals. St. James Deacon Al Graff notes that “one of the most important things is we treat patients with dignity.”

Dr. Robert Bobbitt was presented the ADA’s 2002 Community Preventative Dentistry Award for his upstanding project. He took the $2500 award and bought more equipment for the clinic.

Holiday time has passed, and now back to work!

The Board wants to encourage every Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy to apply for a grant from the PFA Foundation. The 2006 Grant deadline is June 1. If you will go to the Pierre Fauchard Academy Web site, which is www.Fauchard.org and from there to “Foundation of the PFA,” then to “Grants,” you will find all the information you need to apply for a Foundation Grant, which will help you serve those who are dentally underserved. These instructions and time frame will allow you and your Section to apply your hearts and creativity to the ways in which Foundation funds and your work can help those who need your help to create and maintain their dental health. Please join us. We have great confidence in what Foundation money and PFA Fellows can accomplish for others.

Our Board is continuing to consider the ramifications of the Emergency Disaster Relief Fund. We obviously want this fund to be equitable. There are several areas we must seriously consider within our Constitution and By-Laws, as well as any pertinent legal questions that might surface.

I can assure you that the Board is deeply concerned that this Emergency Disaster Relief Fund be done correctly and well. This topic is more complex than we originally realized. But with your help, we will accomplish this goal.

The Executive Board will confer on February 12 via a conference call preceding the Interim Board Meeting on 8 April 2006.

FRANCE

Trustee Hubert Ouvrard hosted an Awards Ceremony at Paris 7 Dental School to present two Foundation scholarships. From Paris 7 Dental University, dental student Romain Depape was presented the award by the PFA Section Chair and Dean of Paris 7 Dental School, Dr. Marie-Laure Boy-Lefevre. From Brest University School of Dentistry was dental student Vincent Berthelot, who was presented his award by Dean Alain Zerilli.

Trustee for Europe Hubert Ouvrard participated in a ceremony last December at the Conseil National de l’Ordre des Chirurgiens Dentistes headquarters, where he presented the Foundation’s grant check for the Association of the Bus Social Dentaire, their mobile dental clinic that served the needy of Paris and its suburbs.

International Trustee-emeritus Pierre Marois, and our Section Chair for France Dean Marie-Laure Boy-Lefevre assisted in presenting the award to Conseil National President Pierre-Yves Mahe. Dr. Mahe expressed his deep and sincere appreciation for the generous support that PFA and the Foundation have given to the people of Paris in helping support their mobile dental clinic that has served the dental needs of the poor for the many recent years. This has become a most successful project that daily serves the population in a number of locations. The use of this method of reaching out to the dentally underserved has worn out two previous mobile clinics from its continual use of service. They are now on their third clinic. The numbers of patients served, the amount of treatment appointments, and the varied services it offers are impressive, but the fact that the program is so well utilized that they have worn out two previous clinics speaks for itself.
