Foundation News

United States

California, Southern Section

Dr. Terry Tanaka, Director of the Thousand Smiles Foundation’s Field and Surgical Team, has by letter thanked the Foundation and Academy for last year’s grant to their efforts in providing needed dental care in Ensenada, Mexico. This is their 23rd year of operating and becoming one of the largest humanitarian comprehensive dental and surgical teams in the United States. They have provided dental services for more than 18,000 needy children, and life-enhancing surgeries for more than 1800 children. He also expressed thanks to Fellow James Vernetti who at 92 still makes the journey to Mexico to help in their project. Volunteers are always welcomed

Colorado

The Howard Dental Center for HIV/AIDS Oral Medicine, a non-profit organization in Denver, which is operated by Dr. Sally Preston, a graduate of Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and managed by Felicia Diamond, an M.A. graduate of the University of Colorado, used their grant money to publish a monograph series on oral treatment of HIV-positive patients in private practice. In the publication, thanks is given to Fellow Gene S. Bloom for his help.

Georgia

Physician John K. Spitznagel, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center in Jasper, Georgia, thanked the Foundation for its grant to help provide basic medical, dental, vision, and other health services to those in Pickens County who have no access to health care. Also serving on their Board of Directors is dentist Bennie J. Norton and Superior Court Judge Brenda Weaver. Retired Congressman Edgar Jenkins, Jasper Mayor John Weaver, Editor Dan Pool of the Pickens County Progress, and dentist Edward N. Parnell, Jr., serve on their Advisory Board.

Iowa

Marilyn Peasley, Director of the Dental Program at the Marshalltown (Iowa) Community Schools, thanked the Foundation for providing the resources to service 39 low-income children with necessary dental care. Through some of the grant money, two trips were made for some 30 students each to the University of Iowa College of Dentistry (200 miles round trip) for extensive dental problems. Additional funding was provided through the Marshall County United Way.

Associate Dean Yvonne Chalkley of the University of Iowa School of Dentistry named dental student Lindsay Compton to receive the Foundation’s James M. Brophy, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Award. This is the first presentation from Vice President Larry Barrett’s Foundation Scholarship Program designed to help raise funds for the Foundation’s corpus funds. Half will be presented to a worthy dental student and half goes into the Foundation funds.

Louisiana

Director of Student Affairs Darlene Brunet of the LSU Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry reports that the PFA Foundation Scholarship Award was presented to student Nicholas J. Rauber. Mr. Rauber expressed his sincere appreciation when presented the Award by Dean Eric J. Hovland last May.

Massachusetts

Dr. Peter Kramers, Chairman of the Massachusetts Dental Society’s Council on Access, Prevention, and Interprofessional Relations, thanked the Foundation by letter for the MDS grant to fund “Tips on Spit,” an anti-smokeless tobacco program that produced a piece on the dangers of the use of chewing tobacco. Their high school contest for artwork for their calendar generated more than 125 entries. The calendars were distributed to 850-targeted schools in Massachusetts.

Pennsylvania

The 2006 Foundation Scholarships have been awarded to dental students Jarrette Kalp of the University of Pittsburgh, Anna Mordinson of the University of Pennsylvania, and Heather Rothrock of Temple University.

Tennessee

Executive Director Ginny Weatherstone of the Volunteer Ministry Center of Knoxville thanked the Foundation for their grant last year in support of their People’s Clinic serving the homeless and poor of the area. This follows a prior grant several years ago. At that time your Editor was in Knoxville (site of the University of Tennessee) and visited the clinic (op.cit. March/April, 2005, pictures on page 5). The Clinic was well kept and easily accessible from the city in a corner building and serving the needs of the community.
