Oregon

The Oregon PFA Section, after a decade or more of attempting to get it established, was formally installed last August with PFA President Howard Mark in attendance along with International Trustee Charles Eller, and past and present Section Chairs of Washington State: Dr. Dave Minahan and Dr. Barry Feder. New Fellows are: Drs. Rickland Asai, Teri Barichello, Sean Benson, Michael Bierman, Fred Bremner, Bruce Burton, Weston Heringer, David Howerton, Mark Jensen, Jay Malmquist, Patrick Nearing, Janet Peterson, Thomas Pollard, Henry Windell, Jack Clinton, and George McCully. Dr. Westin Heringer was selected to become their first Section Chair. The charter members include the outgoing and the incoming Oregon Dental Association Presidents, the 11th District Trustee, several ADA Councilmen, an ADA Council Chair, and the past President of AAMOS.

Pennsylvania

With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Dr. John B. Lathrop of Elverson last September. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and was a Psi Omega Dental Fraternity brother. He served as a Navy Lieutenant for two years. He practiced in West Chester. Dr. Lathrop was elected to Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry and had received the Pennsylvania PFA Distinguished Dentist Award. The ADA 2nd District presented him with their Recognition Award as did the Pennsylvania Dental Association. He was awarded the Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. He is ICD Foundation President and had served as ICD President, USA Section.

Utah

Chair Richard Petty hosted their annual Breakfast Meeting last February during the Utah Dental Association Convention. Past PFA President Gary Lowder assisted in inducting Drs. Paul R. Baugh and Robert J. Capener into Fellowship Dr. Richard C. Enger, attorney for PIE, of Murray received the Utah Section Distinguished Dentist for the Year Award.

Rhode Island

International Trustee Richard Walsh has been serving as President of the Rhode Island Dental Association as well as PFA Section Chair. His section continues to maintain their very successful Anti-Smokeless Tobacco Program that has become the State’s resource for information on this topic. Fellow Nicholas Barone serves as Chair for the Donated Dental Services Program, which has provided over $1 million in donated dental services. Their annual Meeting last May in Warwick was well attended. International President Howard Mark addressed the attending Fellows and presented the Outstanding Dentist of the Year Award to Dr. Edward Ferry of Cranston. Their Special Achievement Award was presented to Ms. Maureen Ross of the Rhode Island Department of Health. Dr. Marian Royer of Middletown and Dr. Augustus Nogueira of Portsmouth were inducted as new Fellows into the Academy. PFA Fellow Craig Van Dongen was installed as the new President of the Rhode Island Dental Association.

Washington State

Chair Barry Feder hosted their annual meeting last July. Retiring Chair Dave Minahan was honored for his past services to the Washington PFA. Ten new members were taken into Fellowship: Drs. Chris Pikel, Chris Delecki, Mary Jennings, Leland Hudson, David Cummins, Patricia Pauley, Mike Aslin, Joel Berg, Sammy Pak, and Steven Waite. The Foundation scholarship recipient Dr. Zocton Lowe enters the periodontal program at Boston University. The other recipient, Michael Bowman, is entering his senior year at the University of Washington.

The Section also participated in Continuing Education Day with ICD and ACD.

Wisconsin

Marquette University’s Associate Dean Denis Lynch, a PFA Fellow, has recommended Dr. Timothy Creamer, Senior Associate Dean for Operations and Clinical Affairs at Marquette for Fellowship.

Wyoming

Chair Scott W. Houfek sponsored their annual Breakfast Meeting last June with ICD and ACD during the Wyoming Dental Association annual Meeting. The ADA President Kathy Roth, and 14th District ADA Trustee Joel Glover attended to discuss the two cheating scandals at U.S. dental schools.
