The History of the Foundation

The Foundation is a non profit, tax exempt corporation as defined under the Section 501c (3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code and is governed by its officers and Board of Trustees listed below.. It is entirely independant from the Pierre Fauchard Academy, its parent organization. It was created to provide monetary grants to support projects that will benefit the dental profession and the public it serves. It is funded through donations received from Fellows and friends of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and through gratefully received; bequests, donations, planned giving, memorials and tributes as well as other public and private sources. Its major benefactor has been a Fellow of the Academy, Dr. Brenes Espinach of Costa Rica, who on his passing left his entire estate of several million dollars to the Foundation.

Dr. Espinach stipulated in his will that the Foundation shall employ the income from his legacy to "promote all aspects of oral health". Although the Foundation remains flexible enough to consider innovative projects in all areas of dentistry, including practice and education, it has chosen to develop two major thrusts: the service and benefit of dental education and the service and benefit of populations, who for whatever cause, have not been able to obtain adequate dental care.

To fulfill these committments, the trustees of the Foundation have designed appropriate programs. To support dental education world wide, the entity entitled "The Dental Student Scholarship Award Program" has been successfully implemented. Click on the SCHOLARSHIP Link for further information. The Trustees further codified guidelines for organizations, institutions, and individuals to request fuinding for program and projects that provide an increase in access to dental care to the deserving bur inadequetly served population. Details of the Grants program and requests are at the GRANTS Link.
