Dental Student Scholarship Program

The major benefactor of the Foundation of the Pierre Fauchard Academy has been the late Fellow, Dr. Brenes Espinach, who in his will, declared that the proceeds of the investment income from his estate shall be used to "promote all aspects of oral health. "The Foundation Trustees declared that, in accordance with that directive, the promotion of oral health begins with the education of dental practitioners, the men and women responsible for delivering dental health care. The professional education of students is to, not only be superb therapists, but to encourage and develop leadership qualities.

Accordingly, each of the dental schools in the U.S.A. and selected others world wide, are offered a scholarship (currently $1,500) to award to one of their students. The schools are invited at the beginning of the calendar year to select a student from the third year class so that he or she will still be in school the following year. The Schools use these three criteria: he or she will have demonstrated high leadership characteristics, he or she shall have well above average academic qualifications, and have need for financial support.

Currently there are fifty four U.S.A. schools that qualify. In addition 28 non-USA schools are chosen each year in countries that have active Pierre Fauchard Academy Sections. Sections and their scholarships are selected based upon their respective membership totals. The non-USA Sections must have a membership of between ten and twenty Fellows to qualify. The determination of which Sections get the scholarships is made by the Foundation Board of Trustees.

This Scholarship Program over the years has been an incredible success with total awards of over one million dollars to date. The great benefit that has been derived from this program is reflected in these young professionals and the fine examples they have set for their peers, in school and beyond.
