2012 Awards and Installation Luncheon

The 2012 Canadian Section Awards and Installation Ceremonies were held on september 14th at the Delta Bessborough in Saskatoon Saskatchewan. Following the welcome and opening remarks by the Trustee of Region 6 Dr Tom Breneman, Dr Joe Harris the President of Pierre Fauchard Academy addressed the 130 people in attendance. Following lunch Dr Joe Harris presented the Elmer Best Award to Dr Burton Conrod recognising his contributions to many dental organizations and including serving as President of the Nova Scotia Dental Association, the Canadian Dental Association and the World Dental Federation. Dr Mitch Taillon Western Canada Section Chair and our event host presented Dr Bernie White with the 2012 Distinguished Service Award. Dr Tom Breneman presented an Honourary Membership Award to Linda Teteruck recognizing her 35 years of service to the Canadian Dental Association in many Leadership roles. Dr Barry Dolman PFA Canada Chair then introduced and presented 10 dental students with Certificates and Scholarships on behalf of the PFA Foundation. The President of the PFA Foundation Dr Kevin Roach was also in attendance. Dr Joe Harris Dr Tom Breneman and Dr Mitch Taillon then installed 27 new fellows. Dr Mitch Taillon then presented Dean Uswak of the University of Saskatchewan with a donation of $6000.00 on behalf of PFA Canada.


2012 Ontario Section Awards and Induction Ceremony

On May 10th 2012, in the Fairmont Royal York hotel in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, PFA Ontario section held its Awards and Induction Ceremony. This event was organised and emceed by the Ontario Section Chair Dr Aldo Boccia.

Following the Welcome and Opening remarks by the trustee of region 6, Dr Tom Breneman, The Invocation was delivered by Dr Harry Hoediono the President of the Ontario Dental Association.

Greetings were then brought by Dr Barry Dolman Chair of PFA Canada, Dr Karyn Stockwell PFA Trustee region 3, and Dr Kevin Roach President of the PFA Foundation.

The 2012 Distinguised Service Awards were then presented to Dr Barry Chapnick and Dr Jack Cottrell for their many contribution's to organised dentistry.

Tom Magyarody the CEO/Executive Director of the Ontario Dental Associationthen introduced Mrs. Linda Samek who was presented with the Honourary Fellowship Award for her outstanding leadership as the ODA Director of Professional Affairs. 34 new Fellows from Ontario, were then inducted into the Pierre Fauchard Academy


2011 Canada Awards and Induction Report

On August 5th, 2011 the Canadian Section held its annual Awards and Induction Ceremony in beautifull Halifax, Nova Scotia. The event was hosted by Dr Alfred Dean, the PFA Atlantic Provinces Chair, and was attended by over 85 people and included the following past Canadian Dental Association Presidents: Dr Ralph Crawford, Dr Toby Gushue, Dr Bernie Dolansky, Dr Barry Dolman (PFA Canada Chair), Dr George Sweetnam, Dr Alf Dean, Dr Burton Conrod, Dr Deborah Stymiest, and Dr Tom Breneman (PFA Canada Region 6 Trustee). The emcee was Dr Tom Breneman, invocation was given by the current CDA President Dr Rob McGregor.

The 2011 Distinguished Service Award was presented to Dr Mary McNally for her work and research in the fields of ethics, care for seniors, aboriginals and other underprivileged groups.

The 2011 Special Appreciation Awards were presented to Mr Stuart Humphrey who is a certified dental technician and currently the Vice President of Production with Aurum Ceramic Laboratories. Stuart is very involved with promoting Aurum sponsored golf tournaments across Canada that have resulted in over $350,000.00 being donated to dental charities through the years.

Mr Greg Teckles was presented with a Special Appreciation Award for his skills as a photographer. He has many national clients, among which one is the Canadian Dental Association, which he has served since 1984. He has photographed each National President, their installation and national conventions since then.

With the support of the Foundation of the Pierre Fauchard Academy we provided scholarships to a student leader from each dental faculty in Canada. The list of dental schools and students are: University of Western Ontario, Erin Mcdonald; University Of Toronto, Mike Lashuk; University Of Saskatchewan, Jill Kulyk and Eric Knouse, University Of Montreal, Simon Jean; Mcgill University, Jennifer Seidler and Layal Kysabi; University Of Manitoba, Katherine Davidson; University of Laval, Sandrine Gosselin; Dalhousie University, Natasha Chishti; University of British Columbia, Micheal Ho, and the University of Alberta, Jenny Shim.

We welcomed 23 new Fellows into our Academy this year. The following were present at our Induction Ceremony: Dr Daniel Albert, Dr Paul Cameron, Dr Peter Jackson, Dr Mary Mcnally, Dr Gerald Smith, Dr Drew Smith, Dr Amelie Prevost, Dr Claude Monnette, Dr Micheal Patrician, and Dr Jean Louis Patement. Our Western Provinces chair Dr Mitch Taillon was present and provided support. He is the host for next year's Awards and Induction Ceremony in Saskatoon Saskatchewan, Friday, September 14th, 2012.

2010 Awards and Installation Dinner

PFA section 6 (Canada)hosted its annual meeting and induction ceremonies on Sunday May 30th in Montreal at the Hotel Nelligan. Here we recognised Dr. Diane Legault, President of the Order of Dentists and Dr. Paul Germain co-founder of "Dentists without Borders" for their Distinguished Service and Maitre Caroline Daoust, our Honourary 2010 Fellow.

Among the many present were Dr. Ronald Smith ( President Canadian Dental Association), CDA Past Presidents Dr's Bernard Dolansky, Louis Dube, George Sweetnam, & Don Friedlander, Dr Serge Langlois ( Pres. ACDQ ), Dr. Larry Levin ( Pres. O.D.A. ), Dr. Frank Stechey ( Pres. Royal College Ont.), Dr. John O'Keefe ( Editor JCDA ), Dr. Denis Forest ( Dir. ODQ- JDQ )and Past Quebec Section Chair Guy Maranda

Dr Barry Dolman Chair of PFA Canada presided over the event with incoming International Trustee Dr. Tom Breneman, where close to $80,000 raised by the PFA Canada was granted to the ten Faculties of Dentistry to encourage the teaching development of of new technologies. Deans from across the country that graciously attended and support PFA were Gilles Lavigne , Paul Allison, Andre Fournier, Thomas Boran, David Mock, and Harinder Sandu.

Fourteen new fellows were also inducted into PFA during the evening Dr.Harinder Sandu , Dr. David Mock, Dr. Trevor Chin Quee, Dr. Luc Gauthier, Dre. Maryse Major, Dr. Rejean Labrie, Dr Sylvie Duranleau, Dr. Carl Tremblay, Dr. Benoit Soucy, Dr. Christian Robin, Dr. Charles-Antoine Hudon, Dr Stephane Roy, Dre. Mireille Savoie, and Dr. Corey Felix

Ten students including Ms. Jeanne Sansfacon (U.Laval), Mr. Tudor-Ioan Sitharu (U. de Mtl),Mr. Evan Wiens ( U.B.C. ) , Mr. Ausama Mohamed ( U. Alberta )Ms. Alison Schubert ( U. Sask ) Mr. Geoff McIntosh ( U. Sask ) Ms. Jackie Samborski ( U. Manitoba ) Ms. Nelly Hashem ( U. Western Ont. ) Mr. David Lee ( U of T. ) were awarded the PFA Foundation Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 through the additional support of Canadian Fellows.

Finally in a pilot project this year PFA Canada began a what we hope will be a tradition. That is giving back locally and directly to one aspect of community service within our host city. The Children's Breakfast Program in Quebec supported by the Fond ODQ was chosen as our targeted project for 2010 in the spirit " that we cannot nourish the minds of children if they are hungry " PFA Canada was pleased to be able to contribute a compilation of checks totalling $5,000 to this very worthwhile endeavour.

PFA Canada will be holding our 2011 annual event next year in Halifax, Nova Scotia with the help of our Atlantic Section Chair Dr. Alfred Dean

PFA Canada will be holding their annual awards and induction dinner during the joint CDA-ODQ meetings in Montreal May 30th 2010 The Montreal meeting will be held at the Hotel Nelligan in the old port and promises to be an extraordinary event.

PFA Canada will be distributing close to 100 thousand dollars in grants and scholorships.

Dr Tom Breneman will preside over his first national event as Trustee. Dr Sam Sgro will receive the Past Section Plaque for his years of support. Dr Jerry Dushkin will now represent Quebec as the new Quebec Section Chair. Two Quebec PFA fellows will be honoured for their distinguished service, Dr Paul Germain & Dr Diane Legault. An Honourary PFA Fellowship will presented to Maitre Caroline Daoust

We hope to have a large turnout in support of this historic event.

PFA Region 6: Canada - New Contact Information

Dr Tom Breneman has assumed the role of trustee for region 6. Dr. Barry Dolman has retired as trustee after 6 years of international service and remains in executive service as the chair of PFA Canada. In other news Dr Sam Sgro has also retired from his role as section chair for Quebec due to many other commitments in organised dentistry. The new section chair for Quebec is Dr Jerry Dushkin. Our Installation and awards meeting will be held in Montreal Sunday May 30th during the CDA 2010 annual convention held in conjunction with the Journées dentaires internationales du Québec. . An event that is being organised by Dr Barry Dolman. Watch for details. Since DCF is being closed down as an organisation, PFA Canada funds will be redistributed among Canada's 10 Faculties of dentistry, again stay tuned.
