Australasian Section Induction Ceremony Brisbane April 2011.
On a clear humid morning on the 1st April 2011 the Australasian Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy met for its traditional breakfast in conjunction with the 34th Australian Dental Congress in Brisbane, Queensland. With over 100 participants the meeting was chaired by Section Trustee, Dr Patrick Meaney. Special guests included leaders in many facets of the profession throughout Australia. These were:
• Dr. Derek Lewis Chair, Local Organizing Committee Brisbane Congress • Dr. Rod Marshall Chair, Scientific Committee Brisbane Congress • Dr. Shane Fryer President, Australian Dental Association Inc. • Dr.John Lockwood, President Dental Board of Australia • Mr. Robert Boyd-Boland CEO ADA Inc • Ms. Tanya Vogt, Chief Executive Officer, Dental Board of Australia • Dr. William Winspear Past International President PFA • Dr. Jonathan Rogers Past Australasian Section Trustee • Mrs Simone Rogers • Dr. Matthew Fisher, CEO ADA (NSW)Branch
Our audience also included a significant number of both past Federal and State Presidents of the Australian Dental Association. The Section report occasional address was given by incumbent Section Trustee Dr. Mark Sinclair. He commented on some current facets of the Academies work and assistance programs as well as bringing the best wishes of International President Dr. Hubert and President-Elect Dr. Joe Harris. The meeting afforded the opportunity to induct 19 new fellows in person with a further 11 in absentia. They were warmly welcomed into the Academy and presented with their certificates, pins and medals. This meeting also enabled the conferring of two special life member awards to two highly deserving individuals. Dr. William (Bill) Winspear was the first non North American International President of the Academy. He was Australasian Section Trustee for many years and to a large degree the current strength and profile of the Academy particularly in Australia, owe much to Bill’s efforts. In June 2010, his contribution to both the profession and society in general were publicly acknowledged by conferring an Order of Australia Award which represents the highest civil accolade in the Australian community. Dr. Jonathan Rogers from South Australia has been a long time servant of the Academy especially in the role of Australasian Section Trustee. He single handedly was responsible for the admission of the great Australian orthodontist and academic Dr. Percy Raymond Begg into the PFA Hall of Fame. This Award ranks this Australian with the greatest names in dentistry over the centuries and Jonathan's endeavours are both acknowledged and appreciated. On conferring and accepting their awards both Bill and Jonathan spoke to the assembled audience and voiced their appreciation to and respect for the Academy. The writer also wishes to acknowledge the guidance and assistance of the other Section Trustees, Drs. Clausen, Meaney, Sawyers and Prof. Paul Abbot. I consider myself lucky to have such a supportive group guiding the actions and involvement of the PFA. Following the breakfast a brief meeting of the Trustees took place with a strategic plan being developed for the year ahead. It would be hoped that the footprint of the Academy can be enhanced leading to our next induction in Melbourne in 2013.

Annual Report for Orlando Board Meeting
The Academy again has marked another year with wide spread acknowledgement as a leader amongst dental honour societies. 2010 will historically be regarded as a year where the world at large struggled with many issues on a global level. Financial security and the potential for outcomes previously thought impossible, occupied governments, corporates large and small, universities and ultimately, individual practitioners. It would hoped that philanthropic organizations such as the Academy would be immune to some degree from these circumstances. Whilst the Australasian Section has seen a small change in Fellow numbers, it remains committed to the ideals and goals so clearly articulated over generations by the past and present leaders of this institution.
Dentistry in this region remains a sought-after, highly regarded profession with a history of leadership amongst the health sciences and with a track record of excellence in respect of delivering successful oral health outcomes. Whilst 2010 has been a relatively quiet year for the Academy, preparations are well advanced at the time of writing for our next induction of new Fellows which will occur at the March 2011 Australian Dental Congress to be held in Brisbane, Queensland. Since our previous induction in Perth in 2009, the Academy has received many applications from deserving individuals and organizations whom have sought assistance based on the ‘credo’ of the Academy and its well established commitment to both dental students and our supporting academic universities. In assessing these applications, I wish to publicly acknowledge the role of my fellow Trustees in this Section. Drs Sawers, Meaney and Clausen and Prof Paul Abbott have provided outstanding leadership and guidance over the past 12 months. At a logistical level, Dr Patrick Meaney has provided invaluable assistance in enabling the maintenance of our membership database and the collection of our Fellow’s subscriptions. This database now represents an extremely valuable resource for a membership organization such as the PFA. His attention to detail and his capacity to deal with a diverse range of membership enquiries is both acknowledged and appreciated.
Personally can I also voice my public appreciation for the role of our Secretary-General, Judith Kozal. Her drive and enthusiasm for this Academy remain undiminished and she provides that special quality of care that has long been part of what marks this Academy as unique.
To our International President, Dr Steve Hedlund, this Section offers our very best wishes and grateful appreciation for his excellent leadership over the last 12 months. His board of management have a done a great job in driving and supporting the vast number of PFA programmes spread throughout the world. We wish him well in his transition to our new French President, Dr Hubert Ouvrard and the celebrations in connection with the 75th anniversary of the Academy. It has been a an honour to represent the Academy as an International Trustee and I look forward with great anticipation to renewing so many friendships when the Academy convenes again in connection with the American Dental Association meeting in Orlando, Florida.
Dr Mark Sinclair Section Chair and International Trustee, Section 8, Australasia. 22nd August 2010.
Orlando Trustees Meeting
In October 2010, the annual meeting of the PFA Trustees occurred in conjunction with the American Dental Association in Orlando, Florida. PFA Fellows from around the globe convened for a three day meeting under the chairmanship of International President, Dr Steve Hedlund from Iowa. During 2010, I have had cause for many interactions with Steve in connection with PFA business and he has provided outstanding leadership in numerous forums.
The traditional Section Chair caucus was again well attended and led by Dr Karyn Stockwell from Georgia. This meeting afforded section chairs from around the world the opportunity to discuss with others, various issues associated with the Academy. These meetings provide an energetic forum for ideas, suggestions and possible future directions for the Academy.
The traditional awards luncheon conferred the Academy's highest honours on a variety of dentists. These Awards acknowledged outstanding service in many areas in which these individuals excelled. Our warmest congratulations to all of them.
This meeting also afforded the opportunity for election of the new leaders for the Academy. The international Presidency transferred to Dr Hubert Ouvrard from France who will also act as the local host for the Academy's 75th anniversary celebrations due to be held in Paris on June 16th, 2011. Please see our web page for further information in connection with this highlight event in 2011. Dr Joe Harris accepted the key role of President-Elect and Dr Ernest Acuna from Mexico into the Vice-Presidents position. We wish each of them our congratulations on their election with the knowledge that the Academy is well deserved in such capable hands.
Finally, this Section will again convene for its traditional breakfast and induction ceremony in conjunction with the up-coming 34th Australian Dental Congress to be held in Brisbane, Queensland. Our breakfast is set for 1st April, 2011 commencing at 6.45 AM at the Brisbane Convention Centre. I look forward to welcoming as many PFA Fellows as possible to this function.
Dr Mark Sinclair PFA Section 8 International Trustee Australia.
Hawaii PFA Trustees Meeting
The annual meeting, was held in conjunction with the meeting of the American Dental Association in Honolulu in early October 2009. It brought together PFA Fellows from around the globe, both to attend the ADA meeting and to catch up with other members of the Academy. It provided the first real opportunity as a meeting of the Academy to reflect on the passing of former Secretary- General Dr Richard Kozal who passed away in March 2009. He has left a vast legacy and our thoughts were with the extended Kozal family and in particular, his wife Mrs Judith Kozal. The Board of Trustees met over 3 days and canvassed a wide range of agenda topics as well as discussing the interaction between the Academy and its Foundation. It provided the opportunity to meet and welcome the new PFA Foundation director, Laura Fleming Doyle. Laura will be a welcome addition to the PFA family and we wish her well in her new role. The Awards luncheon was well attended with out-going International President Dr Chuck Eller presiding. A wide range of PFA awards were conferred on a variety of worthy beneficiaries who have enriched our profession. Congratulations to each of you! Dr Joseph Harris (USA) was elected into the position of Vice-President and we know Joe will be a welcome addition to the new management team. After a busy three days, the leadership baton passed to Dr Steve Hedlund from Iowa. Steve will be bring a wealth of experience and we wish him every success in this important job for the Academy. The Board of Trustees will again meet in Orlando, Florida in October 2010. I wish you all well.
Dr Mark C Sinclair BDS LLB Section 8 International Trustee PFA. Australia.
Annual Report for Hawaii Board Meeting
The last 12 months for the Academy’s Australasian Section have provided the opportunity to progress its profile and involvement throughout the Pacific region. In keeping with its Charter, the Academy again directed its resources to both identify and acknowledge dental students of excellence in dental schools throughout the Commonwealth and surrounding countries. Student Awards of Merit and Academy Foundation Student Scholarships continue to be distributed to grateful beneficiaries and appreciative academic staff.
In March 2009, the Australian dental profession gathered for its biannual congress in Perth, Western Australia On a glorious morning, the Australasian Section of the PFA met on Friday March 13th for their traditional Induction Breakfast. At a spectacular glass-lined venue over-looking the beautiful Swan River, Fellows from throughout Australia came together immediately prior to the opening of the Congress scientific program.
Special guests of the Academy included Dr Neil Hewson, Federal President of ADA Inc, Dr John Owen, (PFA Inductee) Congress Chairman and President of the Dental Board of Western Australia, Dr Shane Fryer, Vice-President ADA Inc, Dr Anthony Poli, (PFA Inductee), President, ADA Western Australia Branch, Prof Paul Abbott, Dean and Head of School, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Western Australia and Mr Robert Boyd-Boland, CEO ADA Inc. Section Trustees, Dr Patrick Meaney (NSW) and Dr Rick Sawers, (SA) were also in attendance.
We were also honoured to host Dr Leynesh Gebrehouit Woldu, an Eritrean dentist who almost single handedly carried on the education of new dentists over 40 years in the war torn state of Eritrea. She provided an inspiration for all who attended the breakfast.
Section Head and Australasian Section Trustee, Dr Mark Sinclair gave the opening address before 140 guests. He conveyed the best wishes of PFA President Dr Charles Eller and President-Elect Dr Steve Hedlund. Dr Sinclair’s address focused on the role of bodies such as the PFA in the wider discipline of dentistry and the special position that this unique profession occupies in the wider community. He called on all PFA Fellows and especially those about to be inducted, to acknowledge the role that their universities played in the progression of their individual careers.
The PFA Australasian Section remains active and supportive of all dental schools throughout the Commonwealth, New Zealand and Fiji. The profile and acknowledgement of the Academy continues to rise. The calibre of our current Inductees and the increase in Western Australian PFA Fellows in particular, ensures the position of the Academy within the dental profession in Australasia.
Dr Sinclair also oversaw the Induction of forty new Fellows, (11 in absentia) and presented the inductees with the PFA pins and certificates. Master of Ceremonies, PFA Trustee Dr Patrick Meaney concluded the breakfast at approximately 8.30AM. Our next induction will take place in conjunction with next Australian Dental Congress, to be held in Brisbane, Queensland in March 2011.
On a far sadder note, the conclusion of our induction meeting coincided with the arrival of the news of the passing of Dr Richard Kozal, long-time Secretary General and international figurehead of the PFA. All Australasian Fellows were saddened by this tragic event and join in passing, with the international dental community, our sincere condolences to the Kozal family. He will be truly missed.
With the conclusion of the Trustee term of Dr Dexter Bambery, we were delighted to announce that Prof Paul Abbott from the University of Western Australia has kindly accepted the position of Trustee for this Section. Prof Abbott has a truly international reputation in endodontics and is well known within the profession in Australia. We welcome and acknowledge him warmly.
Finally, I would like to take this public opportunity to acknowledge the role of this Sections’ other Trustees who include Dr Patrick Meaney (NSW), Dr Rick Sawers (Sth Australia), and Dr Gerry Clausen (Vic). Patrick has been pivotal for his role in maintaining our membership database and subscriptions, Rick for his support, advice and organization of the Sth Australian dinner, and Gerry, for his great work in assessment of student awards of excellence. To these very supportive colleagues I say a very special thank you. The Academy’s profile within this region continues to grow and evolve. The role of the office of the Secretary General is pivotal in this development. I would like to personally thank Judith Kozal for her great assistance in the smooth running of our Academy. Her input, advice and assistance in preparation of awards and certificates have proved invaluable.
The Academy looks forward to 2010 and its continued position as a pre-eminent dental honour society committed to the profession and its students in this region.

San Francisco PFA Meeting September, 2007
Report from Dr Jonathan Rogers Trustee Region 8 San Francisco Pierre Fauchard Meeting September 27th –October 1st 2007 Marriott Hotel
I have recently returned from this very successful meeting and I am pleased to present my final report as your Trustee for Region 8. Section Chair Caucus Meeting The meeting commenced at 8am Friday September 27th with a caucus meeting of Section Chairs together with the Officers of the PFA This was a vigorous meeting ably lead by Dr Dan Castagna from Region 5 (Western Region USA) where many views were shared and discussed. There was an obvious theme throughout the meeting which centered on the need for efficient communication between the Central office and the Sections and also from and between Fellows. Obviously the Internet Website and email will be the prime conduit for this to occur. Each section reported on its various activities and some of the ideas are innovative. For instance some regions have a ‘White Coat’ ceremony whereby Undergraduate students entering the clinical phase of their education are each presented with a white coat embroidered, presented and sponsored by the PFA. Mentorship and involvement with the teaching schools in dentistry was a very strong theme especially in the USA. Other regions such as Georgia have a smart PFA Folder presented to new incumbent Fellows which includes a welcome package and information for new Fellows. Other views shared included the need for a newer, smarter PFA banner. The most important issue was the need to repatriate the Foundation rebate to each Section efficiently in order to fund regional projects. This will need to be progressed by the Regional Trustees through to the section Chairs. Other issues discussed included recruitment of new Fellows and the criteria for Fellowship were defined to the following:
1. 5 years minimum in practice (post graduation) 2. Exemplifies professional ethics and skills 3. Displays leadership skills 4. Contribution to the profession and /or community
This meeting afforded me the opportunity to meet many other colleagues from around the world and also to hear and observe what other Sections are doing. Our Region can hold its head high, but there are further opportunities for the PFA in our Region to expand its role.
Board of Trustees Meeting Meetings continued throughout the weekend including the Board meetings which I attended. Dr Bill Winspear in his final role as International President presided over these meetings with his usual flair and efficiency. Many and various reports were presented too numerous to detail here but needless to say most Regions are very active and we can look forward to many opportunities globally. For instance the next international dental meeting in Sao Paulo Brazil in 2008 is a very big meeting and it will be open to PFA Fellows free of charge if they wish to attend. This has been orchestrated by Dr Ernesto Acuna Trustee of Region 7.
The need for a generational change throughout the PFA was apparent commencing with our current communication abilities and the updated Website together with improved email abilities will be paramount to this end. This will necessitate an upgrade of the current directory to improve ease of use and to include email addresses of Fellows where authorized and appropriate
Dr Winspear reported on his year’s activities which can be read on his web page and in Dental World. Needless to say he has represented the PFA and Australasia admirably and tirelessly throughout the year. The highlights were his visits to New Orleans, Oklahoma, India –the latter being the induction of the Hall of Fame recipient Dr. Rafiuddin Ahmed.
Awards Ceremony The Awards luncheon on Saturday September 28th in the Marriott Hotel was a great occasion. It included the induction of new Fellows from Region 5, induction of the new Officers for PFA and several well deserved awards. The proceedings of this important event will be reported in Dental World in due course. One of these was the Elmer Best Award given to an outstanding Dentist outside the USA. If you look at the recipients of this ward on the Website you will see some household names in dentistry. This award is not given lightly. I am please and proud to report the recipient for this award for 2007 was Dr Patrick Henry from Perth Australia. Most of you will know Patrick (those of you who don’t must be living under a rock!) but many of you may not know his exhaustive CV. His contributions to dentistry in Australia are enormous, but he also commands great respect from many colleagues in other countries where he has also made significant contributions. I was pleased indeed to be present when he and his wife Kerry were honoured at this meeting and received a standing ovation. Other great leaders were recognized at this meeting and the detail of these interesting and eminent people can be read in Dental World. However I would be remiss if I did not report that Dr Bill Winspear was honoured also at this meeting for his very successful year as the PFA President and he gave a wonderful speech which was both humble and humorous. With due aplomb he then presented the incoming President Dr Jim Englander with the Presidential Office for 2008. Thanks Bill for representing us so well. We can also look forward to great leadership from Dr Englander.
This was also my final meeting as your Trustee and it is with some regret that I have decided to relinquish my position as the International Trustee for our Region. Personal and professional commitments dictate that it is time for me to hand over the reigns. It has been decided to combine the position of Section Chair and International Trustee for our region and I am pleased that Dr Mark Sinclair as the current Chair of our Section has agreed to assume the role of Trustee also. I highly commend him to the Academy and he will undoubtedly represent our Region and the Academy admirably. I wish him every success in his new role.
I take this opportunity to thank my Colleagues and friends from the International body and my Section Trustees for all their support and camaraderie. I particularly thank all the Fellows in Australasia for their support, friendship and encouragement over the many years I have been involved in this great organisation. I look forward to observing its growth and stature over the years to come.

Hall of Fame- Inaugural Australasian Recipient
Our Region was pleased and proud indeed that PR Begg was inducted to the Hall of Fame this year. A ceremony in Adelaide celebrating this event is reported below. This celebration was followed the next night by a very successful dinner at the Adelaide Club hosted by Dr Rick Sawers -Trustee for the Regional Board. This was well attended and Dr Mark Sinclair -President of the Region for PFA and also Dr Bill Winspear International President both gave excellent speeches. Dr Ian Watson a PFA Fellow and well respected orthodontist also presented greetings from the International Asian Orthodontic community acknowledging Dr Begg's place in history. It was a very enjoyable night and will be followed in other States by similar events, providing opportunity for comraderie amongst the Fellows.
It has been a buoyant time for the PFA in Australasia due to a vibrant Regional group of Trustees and also the generous distribution of Foundation Student Scholarships which highlights the philanthropy of this organisation. I am pleased to announce that all 6 Dental Schools will receive a Foundation Scholarship for a worthy undergraduate commencing this year.
The following is a report from Prof Wayne Sampson describing the PR Begg Ceremony.
'Pierre Fauchard Academy inducts Dr P. Raymond Begg AO into the International Hall of Fame'
It may have been the first day of winter but for the large group of people who attended the ceremony to induct Dr P. Raymond Begg into the Pierre Fauchard Academy’s Hall of Fame there was a warm feeling of pride in the exceptional achievements of our famous Adelaide orthodontist. The induction formally recognized Dr Begg’s life and profound contributions to dentistry over a professional career spanning nearly 60 years of innovation which revolutionized the practice of orthodontics worldwide. From his birth in a tent on the Coolgardie goldfields in 1898, Percy Raymond Begg studied dentistry in Melbourne, gained his orthodontic training at the renowned Edward H. Angle College of Orthodontia in Pasadena, California in 1924-25 before returning to Adelaide where he taught orthodontics until his retirement from the University of Adelaide Dental School in 1964. However, he did not retire from private orthodontic practice until 1980 and had been in huge demand on the international scene to teach his philosophy and treatment technique. The revolutionary nature of Dr Begg’s approach to orthodontic practice had an enormous transforming effect which still impacts upon contemporary orthodontic systems. With the indefatigable support of local colleagues, like Milton Sims and Geoffrey Brown, the Begg appliance and unique treatment approach firmly placed Adelaide on the world stage.
The induction is highly significant in that Dr Begg is the first Australian of only 17 historically famous dentists to be honoured in the Hall of Fame by the Pierre Fauchard Academy. There will be another induction ceremony in Paris on the 12th June, 2007 to further confirm the international significance of this important event. Pierre Fauchard (1678-1761) is recognized as the Father of Modern Dentistry who raised the art and practice of dental procedures to a dignified profession within the medical and health sciences.
Plaques commemorating the induction were presented by the International President of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, Dr William Winspear, to Dr Begg’s daughter Mrs Diana Coates and Lieutenant General John Coates as well as to Professor Johann de Vries, Dean of the School of Dentistry and Professor Wayne Sampson, inaugural P. R. Begg Chair of orthodontics. Other guests included the Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Mr Michael Harbison and the Lady Mayoress Kate Harbison; Malcolm Begg Snr and Malcolm Begg Jr; Dr Martin Dooland, Chief Executive Officer of the South Australian Dental Service; Mrs Helen Sims; Dr Ian Watson, Oceania Representative for the World Federation of Orthodontists. The Pierre Fauchard Academy was also represented by the International Trustee Dr Jonathon Rogers, the Australasian Section President, Dr Mark Sinclair and Dr Rick Sawers, South Australian Trustee.
It was a memorable evening with many highlights, including a superb presentation by Dr John Jenner who spoke with the knowledge and affection of having worked with Dr Begg in the latter years of his practising life. Although Dr Begg died in January 1983, his influence upon dentistry has been so profound that he has continued to receive honours of great significance such as inclusion as the only dentist among the 200 most influential Australians during the bi-centennial celebrations in 1988 and the Powerhouse Museum’s listing in 2001of the 100 Australian landmark innovations for the 20th century.
Prof. Wayne Sampson Director Begg Orthodontic Clinic Adelaide University Sydney Regional Dinner
I am pleased to report that a further Regional dinner was recently held in Sydney at the Wharf Restaurant on the Sydney Harbour foreshore with 74 attendees. This was a celebration for the PFA locally as well as the forthcoming induction of Dr. Bill Winspear as the new International President. He is looking forward to following the footsteps of our current and well-respected President Howie Mark and will certainly place his own footprint on the Academy. Chairman, Dr Mark Sinclair and his wife Judy hosted the dinner and the Master of Ceremonies was Dr Patrick Meaney. Honoured guests included the Federal President ADA Dr Bill O'Reilly and his wife Susan, NSW ADA President Dr Chris Wilson, the CEO ADA NSW Dr Matthew Fisher, emeritus President ICD Dr Syd. Dobbin, Dr Norton Duckmanton, to name a few.
Dr Bill Winspear responded to the Chairman's speech given in his honour and conveyed greetings from the Board of Trustees and indicated his enthusiasm for his forthcoming role as President. He also acknowledged all those who had contributed to his career and professional life.
The dinner was enjoyed by all and the enthusiasm for this event will ensure it is held every year or so between the major biennial event coinciding with the Australian Dental Association Congress. Greetings to all Fellows of the Australasian Section of Pierre Fauchard Academy.

We also wish to encourage all Fellows to consider others in the Profession who are worthy of nomination for Fellowship in the Academy. The criteria for nomination should include those who have contributed either or both to the community and the profession above and beyond their normal vocation and responsibilities- and of course to be of good standing as a practising dentist. Please contact Chairman Mark Sinclair or any of the Trustees.
