The Michigan Section met on November 12, 2010 from noon until 2PM, in conjunction with the Detroit District Dental Society Review at the Detroit Marriott Hotel. There were 56 in attendance at the meeting. The Invocation was delivered by Dr. Cheri Newman, our Midwest Region 4 Trustee of the Academy.
Dr. Hirsch introduced the following guest, Dr. Fares Elias, President of the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. David Campbell introduced his family and a student guest from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Dr. William Berkowski introduced five student guests from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry.
The Treasurer's report was given by Dr. Danielle Ruskin, and the Membership Chairperson's report was given by Dr. Pat Boyle. She reminded all that the cut off for the Fellowship nomination forms was February 1, 2011 for the April meeting. Dr. Hirsch presented the PFA award to our past treasurer who unfortunately could not attend the meeting. The plaque was shown to the group and all raved about its beauty. The award will be presented to Dr. Edward Sarkisian by Dr. Hirsch at Dr. Sarkisian's home. A discussion was carried out pertaining to the PFA Foundation, and all were asked to plese support this very important Academy endeavor. The attendees were appraised of the upcoming PFA meeting in Paris France in June 2011, We hope to get a good attendance from the Michigan Section.
The Trustee report was given by Dr. Cheri Newman. She mentioned the meeting in Orlando and the part that the Michigan Section had at the meeting. The International President-Elect, Dr. Joseph C. Harris gave his report and stated that there were going to be a number of changes in the near future and would keep all informed as they took place.
Fve new Fellows were inducted into the Academy by Dr. Hirsch. They were: Drs. Susan Long, Robert Niskar, Charles Marinelli, James Austin, and Lee Ockner. The Charge to the Fellows was read by the Secretary, Dr. Sherill Behnke. Dr. Hirsch then presented the new Fellows with their Certificates, Lapel Pins and Keys.
Dr. Hirsch had last years Instructor of the Year Awardee, Dr. Sherif Badr escort Dr. William berkowski, this years Awardee to the Podium. Dr. Hirsch presented the Instructor of the Year Plaque to Dr. Berkowski, an instructor at the University of Detroit Mercy since 1978. Dr. Berkowski thanked the Academy for this honor.
At this time, Dr. Hirsch introduced a new Award tht would be presented to only one individual annually if they met the Awards strict criteria. The Award is named in honor of a Life Member of the Academy and an individual who has devoted his life to mentoring not only students at our two dental schools but also to individuals in his church and community. Dr. Hirsch had Dr. Joseph C. Harris escort his father Dr. Joseph B. Harris to the posium where a plaque was presented. I read: The Joseph B. Harris Mentorship Award. Dr. harris thanked the Aademy and proceeded to reminince about Dentistry in the late 40's and 50's.
Dr. Hirsch assisted Dr. Harris in the presentation of the first Joseph B. Harris Mentorship Award to Dr. Malcolm D. Campbell. Dr. Campbell thanked the Academy and Dr. Harris for this great honor.
Life Membership was discussed in detail by Dr. Hirsch and the History of the Life Membership Lapel Pins and Certificates that had been created for our members was explained. Dr. Hirsch had the following Life Members approach the podium to receive their Life Membership Pins and Certificates: Drs. Joseph B. Harris, Mlcolm D. Campbell, Louis E. hirschman, Donald B. Smith, Julius F. Chikos, Howard A. Scheer, John S. Buchheister, Charles E. Owens, Ronald F. Paler and Edward H. Hirsch.
The next meeting of the Michigan Section will be in Grand Rapids in April 2011 in conjunction with the Michigan Dental Association Annual Meeting.
