Washington State Section Meeting June 2010

The Washington Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy held it’s annual meeting on 17 June 2010 in Seattle. There were 115 Fellows and guests attending. We celebrated the induction of thirteen new Fellows into the Academy. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Dr. Barry Feder of Issaquah, the Washington Section Chair. Joining him were special guests Steve Hedlund; International President and his wife Christine; Chuck Eller; Immediate Past President; and Dan Castagna, our 5th district PFA Trustee.
The thirteen new Fellows are a geographically diverse group, representing all areas of Washington State. They bring a wealth of professional and community involvement to the Academy. Last year, we inducted, as far as I can tell, the first mother/daughter team: Pat and Cynthia Pauley from Bellevue, Washington. They were joined this year by Danny and Michael Warner from Vancouver, Washington. They are our first father/son team.
The thirteen new fellows are:
Dr. Doug Coe, Walla Walla-Dr Coe has gone through the chairs and served as president of the Walla Walla Valley Dental Society and has served as an overseas volunteer with Medical Teams International. He has been a Delegate to the WSDA House of Delegates.
Dr. Polene Speed-McIntyre, Seattle- Dr. McIntyre has been and is currently on the Faculty at UW School of Dentistry and Seattle Central Hygiene program. She is a member of ICD and is on the staff of Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Lisa Block, Gig Harbor-Dr. Block is a board member of the Washington Oral Health Foundation and is a Diplomate and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She is also involved at the state level with the ABCD Program as a champion/trainer.
Dr Michael Warner, Vancouver-Dr. Warner has gone through the chairs and served as president of the Clark Country Dental Society. He is a Board member of the Washington Oral Health Foundation and has served as a delegate to the WSDA House of Delegates. He is active in his community Smile Savers Program as well.
Dr. Danny Warner, Vancouver- Dr. Warner has gone through the chairs and served as President of the Clark Country Dental Society. He has served as aWSDA Board Member and is a member of ICD. He is highly involved in state level legislative affairs and has served on WSDA DenPac and Government Affairs Committees.
Dr. J.D. Troy, Longview- Dr. Troy has gone through the chairs and has served as President, Lower Columbia Dental Society. He has served as a delegate to the WSDA House of Delegates and is involved with the WSDA Outreach Program for underserved populations.
Dr. Amy Winston, Seattle- Dr. Winston is currently serving on the Seattle King County Dental Society Executive Council. She is on staff at Swedish and UW Hospitals and is on the Board of Governors-American Assn of Hospital Dentists. She is the Assistant Director of the Swedish Medical Center GPR and is on faculty at the UWSOD. Her practice is limited to special needs patients who are medically compromised.
Dr Michael Huey, Bremerton- Dr. Huey is on staff at Harrison Hospital and is on the endodontic faculty at UWSOD. He has gone through the chairs and served as President, Kitsap County Dental Association. He has served as WSDA Legislative Director and is a past president of the Washington State Association of Endodontists
Dr. Jeanine McDonald, Spokane- Dr. McDonald is heavily involved in the Spokane District Dental Society and is President-elect of the Washington Academy of General Dentistry. She is a delegate to the WSDA House of Delegates and serves of the faculty of UWSOD; and Eastern Dental Hygiene Program.
Dr. Tom Sweeney, Bellevue- Dr. Sweeney is currently serving on the WSDA Budget and Finance Committee. He has gone through the chairs and served as President, Washington State Society of Periodontics. He has served as a delegate to the WSDA House of Delegates and on the Executive Council of Seattle King County Dental Society.
Dr. Mark Paxton, Spokane- Dr. Paxton has gone through the chairs and served as President, Washington State Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He has served on the Washington State Dental Quality Assurance Commission. And was the 2007 WSDA Citizen of the year. He has gone on many overseas missions to Central and South America.
Dr. Hashim Clothia, Seattle- Dr. Clothia serves as Director and Steering Committee for China Volunteers Overseas and has been instrumental in establishing a dental school in Sichuan, China. He is a member of ICD and FDI. He has served on SKCDS Peer Review and Forensics and is a member of the WSDA Mass Fatality Team. He is a Fellow, American College of Forensic Examiners.
Dr. Ed Truelove, Seattle- Dr. Truelove is Dept. Chair of Oral Medicine at UWSOD. He is a Delegate to the WSDA House of Delegates and is a member of the Seattle King County Dental Society. He has served on multiple Editorial and Review Boards and is the author of Essentials of Oral Medicine. He has been on the ADA Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations. He is on staff, UW Hospital , Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and Group Health Hospitals
In addition to the induction of our thirteen new Fellows, we also had our University of Washington Dental Student Award winners present. Our Fourth Year Award winner was Jason Tanguay. Our Third year Scholarship Winner, Daniel Seetin was unable to be with us for the evening. Our Second Year Scholarship winner was Rusty Johnson. Both Jason and Rusty and their guests got a chance to address our meeting and met many of our Fellows and International Officers at the dinner.
Drs. Hedlund, Eller and Castagna gave short reports on the Academy, Foundation and International happenings. Dr Eller charged our new Fellows with their continuation of service, and all helped in the Initiation Ceremony.
Mr. Dick Fredricks was present to accept the Pierre Fauchard Foundation grant awarded to Medical Teams International. The grant will go toward expanding the Walla Walla Mobile Dental Van Program, which serves the Southeast part of the state. The Mobile Dental Van program is instrumental in delivering care to this part of the state, which is rural in nature and truly is underserved. There are four other Mobile Dental Vans serving Washington State, and many of our Fellows volunteer to provide care for this program. Mr. Fredricks had a short presentation on Medical Teams International and the Dental Vans in particular.
The past year has been a great one for the Washington Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and we look forward to another active year in 2011. Our annual meeting for 2011 will be on 16 June, 2011 at 6 pm at the Washington Athletic Club in downtown Seattle.
