Posted September 05, 2012
The Washington Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy held its Annual Meeting on June 14, 2012 in downtown Seattle at the Washington Athletic club. Ninety-seven Fellows and guests attended. The Master of Ceremonies was Dr Barry Feder of Issaquah, the Washington Section Chair and Fifth District International Trustee. Guests included International President Joe Harris and Vice President Dan Castanga. Dr Joel Berg, the new Dean of the University of Washington Dental School was present, as was Dr Greg Bengston . Dr Bengston is the new Section Chair for Idaho. Dr John Carberry from Yakima was introduced and inducted as the new Washington State Section Chair.
Our ten new Fellows are a geographically diverse group, representing all areas of Washington State. They bring a wealth of professional and community involvement to the Academy. The ten new Fellows are Drs. Kalman Klass, Seattle; Kirk King, Renton; Tim Hess, Auburn; Theodore Baer, Tacoma; George McIntyre, Seattle; Carrie Magnuson, Bellevue; Diane Paxton, Spokane; Keith McDonald, Renton; Ron Dahl, Ferndale; and Karim Alibhai, Bellevue.
Two of our three student award winners were also present and were recognized for their achievements at our meeting. Present were Daniel Schruth, our Fourth Year Leadership Award winner, and our Second Year Scholarship and Leadership Award winner. Our Third Year Scholarship Award winner, Brian Christianson, was as an Oral Surgery Internship Rotation and was not able to be present. All three of these outstanding young people exemplify the leadership and academic tenets of the Academy. We look forward to their continued involvement in our profession.
Dr Joe Harris and Dr Dan Castagna gave a brief report on the current state of the Academy and our Foundation and answered a few questions. We also recognized our current Foundation grant Recipient: Medical Teams International. A $5000 grant was awarded to Medical Teams to increase to care provided by their Disabled Dental Van. Mr Dick Fredricks, MTI vice president, gave a short presentation regarding the care provided by the van and it’s volunteers, many of whom are Academy Fellows.
Applications for next year’s Foundation Grant Program include the Swedish Hospital Emergency Dental Clinic and Smiles Forever.
The past year has been another great one for the Washington Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and we look forward to another active year in 2013. Our Annual Meeting will change location next year and will be held mid June in Bellevue, Washington. Look for meeting specifics on the website.
