Annual Breakfast Meeting and Induction Ceremony
September 14, 2018
Hyatt Regency Columbus
The 60th Annual Breakfast Meeting of the Ohio Section was held in the Fairfield Room of the Hyatt Regency Columbus on Friday September 14, 2018 in conjunction with the Ohio Dental Association Annual Session. Approximately 65 Fellows and guests attended the event. The Invocation was given by Dr. James Karlowicz, Membership Chair and a hearty breakfast followed. After the meal, Dr. Kim Gardner, Section Chair, announced the student PFA Scholarship recipients for 2018. Ms. Elizabeth Ly was the Scholarship recipient from the Case Western Reserve School of Dental Medicine. Her award was presented at the White Coat Ceremony on the campus of CWRU on July 30, 2018. Mr. Adel Hasan, who was able to attend the breakfast, received The Ohio State University College of Dentistry Scholarship. Each scholarship carries with it a check in the amount of $1,500. The generosity of the Ohio Fellows enables the awarding of these scholarships.
The members were treated to an update of current dental education and facility improvements by the Deans of our oustanding dental schools. Dr. Kenneth Chance, Dean of the Case Western Reserve School of Dental Medicine, informed the audience of the numerous programs and activities that the students are exposed to during their education. Dr. Patrick Lloyd, Dean of the College of Dentistry at OSU, provided numerous insights into the education process with a special emphasis on the awarding of scholarships to individuals who were admitted to the school from underserved areas in the state who are committed to returning to those areas to provide dental care upon their graduation. Both schools are undergoing extensive building projects to upgrade facilities in order to provide the most modern and comprehensive dental education process in the country.
Due to time constraints, Dr. Richard Cavolo, Ohio Section Treasurer, was not able to give a verbal report, but members were encouraged to request a copy if they so desired.
The Ohio Section inceased its membership by three with the induction of Drs. Paul Barnes of Granville, Kenneth Brandt of Cincinnati and Keith Norwalk of Genoa. These gentlemen possess excellent credentials and have provided hours of community service outside of their practices. The Ohio Section welcomes these men who epitomize uncompromised professionalism in their daily lives.
The highlight of the ceremony is the awarding of the Ohio Pierre Fauchard Distinguished Dentist for 2018. This year the award went to Dr. Christopher Connell of Cleveland. Dr. Connell is a Past President of the Ohio Dental Association. He has served on numerous ODA and ADA Councils and Committees and as a Delegate to both organizations' Houses of Delegates. He was presented the award by Dr. Marsha Pyle, Dean of the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry. It was pointed out that we had 3 of the 66 dental school deans attending this breakfast!
Next year the 61st Annual meeting will be held on Friday October 4, 2019 at the Hilton Columbus at 7:30 am. Specific details will be emailed in early September.
