July-August 2018

From the Desk of the President. Greetings to all Fellows. It is difficult to believe that my year as your President is halfway through and I feel I have so much more to achieve before completing my term in October in Hawaii. Your Executive Team is in frequent communication by way of monthly teleconferences, which have been invaluable for keeping in close contact with the central office and my fellow directors to continue with core business, enable changes to occur and support meetings with visiting members of the Executive Team and Board of Trustees. While this frequent communication is essential in helping us run the Academy, the Board is aware that communication is an issue for our Fellows. This received considerable attention at our mid-year meeting in Anaheim California, so that we can enhance our systems and make these more transparent.
I recently attended the Taiwan Section annual meeting at the Howard Plaza Hotel in Taipei.

From the Desk of the President
Hello Everyone,
Welcome to my first Presidents’ report. I am delighted to have been appointed President of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, only the second Australian to hold this office. It amazes me that a man from the Australian semi-desert bush country would be able to become a dentist (my family members were sheep pastoralists for
generations), and to then be recognized as a Pierre Fauchard Academy Fellow and rise to this position. It is a pleasure to be able to serve the Academy in this way and I am really looking forward to the year ahead.

September-October 2017

From the Desk of the President
What’s new since I reported to you last? Dr. Armyl Bañez, our Asia Trustee, has been working hard on the Academy’s behalf. Since I reported to you last, a combined Hong Kong, Taiwan and The Philippines meeting held in Taipei this July saw 26 new Fellows inducted. It was a pleasure to see these three sections working together. In August, thanks to the efforts of Hong Kong and Taiwan, Dr. Bañez met with representatives of the Chinese Stomatological Society in an effort to develop our Academy in mainland China. Like I said before, this is an ongoing process, and will take some time and effort to come to fruition.

July-August 2017

From the Desk of the President
Hello Everyone,
Hello to all Fellows from Seattle, where we just concluded the first full mid-year
board meeting held in many years. The full Board of Trustees and all the PFA officers,
along with our Executive Director, Loralie Lowder and our accountant, Dan Jonker, were present. All of our Academy’s committees met, including the Budget and Finance Committee, and our Executive committee. We are in a good position financially, and it was decided that there will be no International Dues increase for 2018. I feel the meeting was very valuable, both in getting Academy business done and having an opportunity for all people attending to get to know one another better. I am hoping that mid-year meetings, perhaps in conjunction with a regional FDI meeting, will continue.

First of all, I’d like to introduce you to your new officers and trustees. Dan Castagna and Dan Jonker continue as Treasurer and Accountant, respectively.

From the Desk of the President
This is my first report to you as President of our Academy. We had an outstanding meeting this past October in Denver with great attendance at all of our events! Your Board of Trustees accomplished quite a lot. Let’s talk about growth for a moment. Currently, we have over ten thousand fellows present in eighty six countries. In Denver, the Board of Trustees approved a new Trustee District by splitting Africa off from our fi rst Trustee District, which includes Europe and the Middle East. I’m proud to introduce our new Trustee for Africa, Dr. Pankaj Patel, who practices in Nairobi, Kenya. Our Section Chair for North Africa is Dr. Ahmed Adel AbdelHakim, who practices in Alexandria, Egypt. We look forward to developing a strong presence in
Africa, with increased membership and programs helping underserved populations. Our new leadership in Africa is well positioned to accomplish this. Their contact information is available from our Executive Director, Loralie Lowder and is on our web page.

SEPT-OCT 2016

It seems to be about that time I guess. My term as President is concluding in October and the plans for the meeting in Denver are well under way. I’ve enjoyed my time in the position and hope I’ve had a positive impact on the organization. It’s interesting to be in a position such as this in that so much of what one does is never seen. I’ve had more pictures taken of me in different settings than I ever could have imagined, and am quite convinced that the number in any one setting is more than I was in at any of my daughters’ weddings. I have to say it’s a bit humbling. Let’s be honest, I’m not good looking, not a famous dentist from the lecture and CE circuit, and don’t look as good in a tuxedo as I used to. Nonetheless, members still want a picture with the President. It’s great to know that it matters to our Fellows to have an officer at their meetings.

MARCH-APRIL 2016

I was mindlessly watching a show on television that I can’t even remember, but do remember watching a commercial for the Android operating system for cell phones. I think the end result was basically “different but the same,” hinting at the fact, I Guess, that all i-Phones are i-Phones and that there is a myriad of Android phones from different manufacturers using the Android system. I have absolutely no interest in starting a conversation as to which operating system is better or which phone works better for you and your needs. From my perspective, whatever fits your needs and budget is the best choice for you.

Nov-Dec 2015

A good day to all my friends and colleagues in the Pierre Fauchard Academy!
I trust this finds you well. As I write this, I’m running down the “To Do List”
given to me by my wife. We’ll be celebrating the wedding of my middle
daughter tomorrow. I seem to have found my management level here. I have a master list and schedule with my assigned duties highlighted in orange. I can tell quite readily that nothing on my list is too terribly important. Dress clothes picked up for the ceremony? Check. Delivery of the table decorations, name tags and table numbers? Check. Tip money available for all those having their hands out? Also check. It seems my job is really just to hold the credit card and checkbook so that even more funds can be disbursed. It comes down to this for me, “Be ready to help whenever called upon.” Check. I have a complete day scheduled for checking hygiene and making sure the Father of the Bride talk is well-rehearsed and worthy of a great event. Most importantly, I’m ready to meet and greet the family and friends of my family. I am truly blessed. I have successful daughters that have chosen great spouses. I’m blessed with a wife of almost 39 years that
was once my high school sweetheart. How can I possibly be married to a Grandmother?

Sept-Oct 2015

It has been a busy and exciting year for the Academy, and an honor and pleasure
to serve as your President. It has certainly been the highlight of my dental career.
It was a privilege to help induct 180 new Fellows during the course of my visits
with 13 of our 66 Sections, representing 8 of our 10 Academy Regions as your President. I remain grateful for the hospitality extended to me as I visited each of these Sections.

Firstly, I would like to send my best greetings to all Fellows in all regions and sections of the Academy.
In 1936, the Pierre Fauchard Academy was born under the leadership of its founder, Dr. Elmer S. Best, accompanied by distinguished professionals of that time who established the main basis for the operation and development of the Academy.
