Leading to inspire future leaders
The mark of a good leader lies in his or her ability to lead by example. In the history
of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, this has been a common characteristic among our
leadership and members. When I was elected as the Academy’s International President, I knew that this was not going to be an easy job. It would entail a lot of time and effort to ensure that we meet our targets and that we continue to remain aligned with our goals and objectives. One of these is to recognize and develop outstanding leaders in our profession, worldwide. It has been clear throughout my years of serving as an active member of our organization that communication is still key in ensuring that we remain on track and that we get things done, to benefit the Academy and the public that we serve.

Looking Ahead

When the Pierre Fauchard Academy was founded in 1936 by Dr. Elmer S. Best, his mission was clear: To recognize and develop outstanding leadership in our profession, internationally. Fast forward to today, the Academy continues to pursue the goals of our founder, but with renewed commitment to serve and to further advance the profession to benefit our members and the communities we serve around the world. For more than eight decades now, we have proactively addressed concerns surrounding the dental practice, offered solutions, and achieved milestones.

Dear Fellows,
It has been my distinct honor to be your International President for the last 25 months. Many accomplishments have been achieved by the talented men and women on the Pierre Fauchard Academy Board of Trustees with whom I had the privilege of working. I would like to thank each and every one of them for their actions while we were together on the Board.

November-December 2019

Greetings from the mile-high city of Denver, Colorado. I am deeply honored
to be installed as your President and will work to the best of my ability to serve our distinguished Academy. During my tenure, I intend to work with my fellow Officers and our exemplary Board of Trustees in creating subtle changes that will further the growth and retention of our 11,000 Fellows in 89 countries world-wide. One of my first changes was to nominate a female dentist to the Pierre Fauchard Academy Hall of Fame. Our Hall of Fame is located in Baltimore, Maryland at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. Dr. Lucy Hobbs Taylor was the first American woman to receive a DDS degree and will be the first woman to be installed into the Pierre Fauchard Academy Hall of Fame

September-October 2019

Greetings to all Fellows. It is hard to believe how much of this year has gone by, and time seems to fly by faster each time. I would like to share a little synopsis of events during the last few months. In April, I had the pleasure of visiting the Pierre Fauchard Academy’s Hall of Fame located in the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The University is known as the first dental college in the world and was founded in 1840. It is also the birthplace of the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. The Hall of Fame is displayed in the hallway leading to the Dean’s office. The joke is that for students who have seen the Hall of Fame, well, that probably isn’t a good thing. All kidding aside, if you have the opportunity to visit, it is well worth the trip. I was given a tour of the school during my visit and, even with his busy schedule, Dean Mark Reynolds gave me an hour of his time. We hope to do more to promote the Academy at the school. That evening, our Maryland Section, hosted by Section Chair Dr. Charles Fine, held an induction ceremony at a local restaurant.

May-June 2019

Greetings to all of our Fellows around the world. We are now over 11,000 strong in 83 different countries and we continue to grow. As I travel to different areas, I see the common threads of professionalism, ethics and leadership in all of our Fellows. As stated in the last issue of Dental World, one focus for the year is finding commonality between dental organizations. We have made strides in that area. In February, the Executive Committee attended a leadership meeting at the American Dental Association (ADA) Headquarters in Chicago. The American Dental Association was represented by its President, Dr. Jeff Cole, Dr. Chad Gehani (the ADA President-elect), Dr Kathleen O’Loughlin (the ADA Executive Director), and the Senior Director, Practice Institute, Dr. Jim Willey. The goal of the meeting was to rebuild our relationship with the ADA, to discuss a potential joint venture with an emerging speakers series and to secure a long-term contract for the back cover of the ADA Annual Meeting preliminary program. The meeting was successful and a good step towards strengthening our mutual relationship. While in Chicago, we also attended the ICD/ACD luncheon. After the luncheon we met with the organizers, and our Academy will now be included in this event going forward.

January-February 2019

Greetings, It is my honor to speak to you as the new President of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. The Academy means so much to me, so I am delighted to be in this position. Our Annual Meeting was held in Honolulu, Hawaii in conjunction with the American Dental Association Annual Meeting. What a beautiful location for our meeting. For those of you who were able to join us, thank you for taking the time to attend our various functions. On Friday evening, the President’s reception was held at the Hyatt Regency on an outdoor patio and featured a fire dancer. On Saturday afternoon at our Annual Luncheon we honored Dr. Michael Cohen and presented him with the 2018 Fauchard Gold Medal.
